Description: "Jacob van Ruisdael was one of the most famous landscape painters of 17th-century Holland, and the foremost exponent of the classical phase of Dutch landscape painting. He was able to create a poetic and sometimes brooding or tragic mood in his landscapes. This can be seen especially in his mature works, such as 'A Pool Surrounded by Trees' in the Collection.
Ruisdael was born in Haarlem, the son of a little known painter, Isaack Jacobsz. van Ruisdael, who was also a dealer and frame-maker. He probably trained with his uncle Salomon van Ruysdael, and in 1648 became a member of the Haarlem painters' guild. Around 1650 he travelled to the hilly area around Bentheim across the German border.
From the late 1650s he also painted waterfalls based on the work of Allart van Everdingen, who had travelled in Scandinavia. By 1657 Ruisdael had settled in Amsterdam and in his later years is said to have also practised as a physician there. He was buried in Haarlem."

My favorite Dutch landscape artist! Ruisdael was a genius at showing Nature in all its moods: sometimes bright and happy, sometimes boring, many times gloomy and forlorn. But always truthful! Ruisdael's work forever remains a snapshot of life in 15th c Holland: a haven from, and a fortress against, the hellish landscapes of modern industrialism and the corporate state.
Very few artists do a good job painting clouds. This artist does an excellent job painting clouds.
Today many paint from photographs, or are helping themselves with them.
He needed to be totally immersed in nature. These paintings are beautifull, I watch them to relax.
What I also love about this paintings is that humans are always part of it, small but yet. There are no skyskrapers, no big farming tractors. We are there, yet we are part of nature. Still not destructive.
As an artist I cay say he worked a lot and is so beautiful

Yes, this artist did not paint on cloudless days. His skyscapes are so interesting I hardly noticed what was on the ground in many of his paintings.

A great painter of the arrogance of clouds.
I really like the coloring in the pictures it's kind of depressing in a good way if that makes any sense.
This is beautiful. See I paint with Acrylic so it looks different than Oil.
Bonne technique et beaux jeux de lumière,mais restant dans le sombre.Comme la majorité des peintures nordiques,les tableaux reflètent une âme triste,sans réelle joie de vivre,qui est dans leur tempérament.
Mais même les Nordiques ont leurs moments de joie. La vie n'est ni que tristesse, ni que joie, il y a beaucoup de nuances entre les deux.
most of the landscapes are not typical dutch, there is much fantasy in it. adutch lanscape is flat withuot rocks and things like that.
Also Roelof Jansz. van Vries works in the same way. (1631-1681)

Actually they did strugle in life, poor artists and working hard.
There must be about 1500 painter who all wanted to make a living out of it.
Rembrandt was in better condition but also died broke. 😅😒
