All the big movie studios need to learn that 3070 rule. It seems like all the Blockbusters out there are just so over-the-top busy I can't even watch them. Great video thanks.
The skill you have developed as well as confidence in inking is such an inspiring sight....I always find myself mesmerized by the way the ink flows onto the page and the smoothness of the movement and lines....keep up the amazing work and thank you for sharing
I have the exact process except for the digital sketching! I just do it traditionally. anyways, loved the video, as always:) Now I gotta wait another three months for the next one😭
I was thinking about how many drawing videos I've watched and learned nothing about drawing then you said it but watching you work is awesome and inspiring and your break downs of comic book design is great thx
Way to turn a sponsor spot into a useful video. a lot of UA-camrs could learn from your approach. you've convinced me to keep watching the video rather just click off and down vote like I do with most sponsor spots.
Always cool to see how someone else does things, I might try that 'threshold' method! I've always just used the 'levels' adjustment to get the deep black lines and white backdrop. But instead of just setting the lineart layer to multiply, I always ctrl+select the blue channel, invert the selection and then fill onto a new layer with the black lines. That way I have them completely isolated from any backdrop, because I feel that gives me a lot of freedom, especially if I want to do colour holds with the lineart.
I always feel this motivation rush everytime I watch your video! It's like you're always passionate about everything that you do. Thank you so much for sharing this with all of us ❤
This really helped me gain back some confidence and enjoyment in my artwork. Nothing looked right to me and the 30/70 rule really helped me flesh out the piece. Thank you :)
Scanning. Threshhold is the fastest way to do it. I usually take the long road. Adjust the brightness/contrast or magic wand all the black, layer via copy.
The gradient thing for the light in the end is a real treat. Also it was really nice to hear about the many lifes of a drawing again. Thanks for sharing!!
I've just ordered the gold robot trumpet player design case with your discount code and I'm excited for it to arrive soon! Great artwork! It was so hard to pick but as I'm a trumpet player myself this design was the one for me!
Came here to learn about scanning art but this 11:11 is a huge thing! 30/70! I always make mess, now I know why it doesn't look as good as I want! Eyes wants to rest! Thank you :)))
It's arrived! I love it 😍 it's the golden robot dude playing the old school trumpet on the ball. I love it because I play the trumpet and ride a unicycle so appreciate this balancing act with musical overtone!
its so satisfying to watch you ink... you could put up a compilation of realtime inking with chill music and I would watch it all the way to the end! :D
If you want to smooth the raw edges that the threshold filter left, you always can Gaussian blur the outline. 0'5 gives me good results but it depends on the dimensions of your archive so try different amounts or combined Gaussian blur passes with low cut/high pass filter passes until you find the perfect combination
OMG... thank you for pointing out that feature in Photoshop. You just helped me save a drawing that I couldn't get the blue-line out of for printing! Also, thank you for the tips and ideas. Love your work.
I totally going to try that shadowing technique in my next drawing! Thanks is for sharing your top secret process! You’re one of my most favorite artists!
Way to multipurpose this video! Extra lives for content for the win! I’ve searched for a proper color/light/ink scanning video and this is it. Thanks a ton
High quality results! And may I say, gestures should be taught as the 1st art lesson everywhere! They always seem to start with structures, and that's boring, tedious, and not what it's about! If more people taught gestures 1st, I bet a lot of people would unlock their vision, start getting more direct, positive feedback from art sooner, and stick with it! I like your method, and another variation might be to sketchh in a sketchbook, scan (or snap a photo), and do linework with vector program--no tablet needed. Anyway this video is one of the best!
Massive Transformers fan so I can't resist watching a robot get drawn. Loved your breakdown of your process, saw a lot of similarities to my own method and a lot of improvements I can now utilise.Thank you for keeping up the awesome work Jake!
Hi Jake, you make some great videos. This one especially with showing how you edit the pencils out of the scan. I see that you’re working with Photoshop on a Cintiq. I have a really tight budget, and I’m going to buy an iPad Pro 12.9, as opposed to a regular computer. And I’m concerned with the limitations of the version of Photoshop that’s made for the IPad. I’m actually going to be working in Procreate, but first I want to edit my scans in Photoshop of course. Do you know if the iPad version Photoshop has full capability in this particular area?
Awesome vid, Jake, relaxing and enriching! Even though I've watched a million tutorial vids over the years, it's always refreshing to step away from my own system for a minute and see how others do it.
This would make a cool toy or action figure series. Maybe something like Mega Blox where they can be small for kids to collect. Very cool! Thank you for the video I love the 3 point perspective podcast too.
Jake, I think that, if you're going to make a contour line on the inside of the object you're coloring to then fill the hole with the paint bucket, then you may want to use the pencil to do that instead of the regular brush, because when you use the brush you end up with anti aliasing that become artifacts after you filled in the hole. And after all, you're using aliased artwork anyway when you used threshold in the linework, so the lack of AA shouldn't matter. You could change the tolerance parameter of the paint bucket if you really want to use brush + bucket, but I'm not sure if there's a "magic number" that would work every time.
Hi Jake! Great video!!! lots to absorb! One thing I wanted to know was what card stock did/do you use in your epson printer?? The listed Epson stock for my printer lacks a card so I want to know if you use an Epson Inkjet card or something else third party... Cheers!
Jake, are you going to put out a "Drawings" book this year? Have you thought of adding this tutorial as a supplement in that book? Or any robot tutorial with all these tips, would be AMAZING!
I was thinking about scanning, inking and all this process just today, after reading your blog entry about the Tie Fighter process. And now you make a video about it. Coincidence? I THINK NOT.
21:05 "It feels a little more lit"
Bro, it looks lit as hell too.
your confindence when inking is just absolutely mind boggeling.... the speed and accuracy is just amazing

hello Kesh!
Hi Kesh
I was thinking about how many drawing videos I've watched and learned nothing about drawing then you said it but watching you work is awesome and inspiring and your break downs of comic book design is great thx
Probably one of the best 30 minutes I've spent on youtube ever. Thank you!

That "Tacobot" pun made me thumbs up this video.
Mexcellent! That pun was all a part of my flan to get an extra thumbs up. I'll stop before it gets guacward.
Your comment about that “Tacobot” pun made me thumbs up your comment

you sound like you just ran a marathon

I loved this video, those shading tips at the end are a game changer for my art. Thanks Jake!
Do you know how he applies the gradient at 20:05 to the whole object? Completely stumped. Can´t reproduce the steps.
Thank you for this. You taught me so much over these last few years. Can't thank you enough.
its so satisfying to watch you ink... you could put up a compilation of realtime inking with chill music and I would watch it all the way to the end! :D
There were so many gems in this video! Thank you.
This is amazing I always think these things take like less than an hour but there’s so much process involved!
Thx Jake !

Wowow. That multiply-layer-coloring technique is real nice!
YEAHHHHH!!!!!! ANOTHER JAKE PARKER VIDEO!!!!!!
OMG... thank you for pointing out that feature in Photoshop. You just helped me save a drawing that I couldn't get the blue-line out of for printing! Also, thank you for the tips and ideas. Love your work.
thanks so much jake! You are an awesome teacher not just in the technical aspect for an illustrator, but in business as well! :)
Thank you Jake Parker!!!
Jake you are by far my biggest inspiration, so thank you for everything.
this is definitley your most helpful video in my opinion thank you for always inspiring me and making me want to create more
Great video Jake! I really love how you stick to your principles as both an artist and a human!
I totally going to try that shadowing technique in my next drawing! Thanks is for sharing your top secret process! You’re one of my most favorite artists!
Painting with Photoshop is really cool. It is easier to paint with a pencil. But I can't draw on a computer. You're so cool.
Always a pleasure to watch you work!

Really appreciate your insight on the process of making work, and being an artist. Great Job.

Love your work man, you made it so easy and simple thanks a lot👍
It's so weird seeing your guys work space from any perspective other than facing Will haha.
So helpful. Will do Inktober this year using this method. Thanks!
Cool thanks for making this I use almost the same process but cool to see someone else draw!
I’m so glad that I found your channel, awesome video! Thank you so very much!!

omg so pleased you've come out with a vid.
A great jumpstart to my day! Thanks, Jake!
I've already forgot I was subscribed XD Congrats on coming back!
This was awesome, Jake. Thank you for your generosity!
The 30/70 Rule, huh? I've never thought about that. Very interesting :D
I'd heard of the rule of thirds for spacing, but never considered doing the same for detail.
x 1.618 = Fibonnaci / Golden Ratio / Sacred Geometry changed my entire portfolio. :)
This would make a cool toy or action figure series. Maybe something like Mega Blox where they can be small for kids to collect. Very cool! Thank you for the video I love the 3 point perspective podcast too.

When scanning, why 300 dpi?
Great advice, as always!

This was pretty amazing!!!
Yess! Love your videos, and was so excited when I saw the notification!
Awesome vid, thanks for sharing 🤟
Thanks for the video! How does your gradient affect only the artwork and not the background colour too?
That is the magic of a multiply layer on a white background.
Invaluable
Sweet vid! And I’ve been enjoying you guys’ podcasts!!
Thank you sir
So awesome man
It was awesome 👍 just completed the workout and m exhausted.....
Love the vid. Is there a reason for the dark purple (and not a dark gray or something else)?
Since purple is made up of red and blue it ads color to your shadows. Grays will make your color look dull.
@@jakeparker44 Sweet, I'll try it. Thanks.
TacoBot ninth life keeps giving!
Thank you so much for sharing your process. Thisi video helped me so much! ✨
