Keep the comments coming folks, I'm loving the input and discussions on my shootout videos, many good points and ideas have been raised. This will all go towards helping me refine my shootout methodology to bring you better content and more in depth reviews and comparisons. I had originally planned these videos to be simple shootouts to give everyone a general idea of where this reel stands but after taking into account everyone's comments, I have decided to expand my review process into a short series. I have changed the title of the video to reflect that this is just Part 1.

great video mann!! love the attention to detail in the explanation and the effort put into the vid :D
one thing i'd like to add from my experience with baitcasters and their brands is
big brands like shimano, daiwa and abu (for Southeast Asia), and lew's, 13 fishing and all that (more USA based brands) have super precise engineering
most of their reels are built to last, to withstand a lot of pressure and to really perform well (retrieving feel, thumb bar solidity, line guide and worm gear smoothness and material, etc, etc)
take Shimano as an example, their baitcasters have super solid body frames (what they call hagane body) and double bearing supported pinion gear that prevent the gears from binding into each other
their freshwater reels have drain holes under the reel body to let the water drain/dry out if it gets into the reel
and overall their reels just feels more solid and the parts are more precisely cut out of better materials compared to other reels
the money goes there, it's not just branding and all, but i'd say branding does kicks up the cost a notch
I've owned a kastking reel, the assassin reel to be exact, which is in the league with the piscifun reels (maybe not the phantom) in terms of price and design and looks
the bearing under the spool shaft, which is the bearing in one of the deepest parts of the reel, gave in after just a day of fishing, with the reel cleaned in the water without taking it apart to dry
the second day it started squeaking, and i took it a part and saw rust on the bearings, and those are what kastking called their Maxidur bearings, which are advertised to last and prevent corrosion
you can even find videos of smaller youtube channels talking about how awesome kastking reels are and when they spin the handle the reel squeaks, which is quite ironic
besides that, the frame of the kastking wasn't super tough as well, it's made out of carbon, but kind of a softer carbon, it doesn't bend under light pressure but when you take on big fish, i do see a possibility of the frame bending, that can introduce binding in the gears
and one more thing about the assassin reel is, maybe they were rushing to release it, and one guy actually did a test
because the reel has both centrifugal and magnetic braking systems, with the centrifugal as the main brake of course, the magnetic brake is tend to be weaker
but in the assassin, they placed it so far off the spool that it actually makes a stupidly small amount, close to zero difference between the min and max settings
however drag was pretty smooth on the kastking (have to give them that), but i ended up swapping out all the stock bearings for ceramic bearings,
but there you go, that's the example of the difference between the brands, for the big brands like shimano the extra money goes to the investments they put into testing their reels out and fixing the problems again and again until they have the suitable product they'll pride their brand on
sorry for the long ass comment, hope this helps anybody that might be needing it, peace out!

Question - did you you use the same line on each reel? If not, which line did you use on each reel, and do you think affected the results?

I just fished with this reel yesterday. I was throwing a jerkbait with a little wind. I have to say it casts as good as my Shamino cores and light as a feather. I don't know how you can can go wrong with this thing.

Nice comparison. I use a number of China reel reasonably over the know Daiwa & Shimano I had. Impressive over their price point.

Bro. It is better to spool the same braid and lbs to give a better views of distance between each baitcaster. Or to give an idea of what line to use to get almost the same distance as the expensive baitcaster.

    • @BCSGFishing
      @BCSGFishing  6 років тому

+salleh ibrahim hey bro, all my Shimano's already have the same line, Duel Armored F+ Pro 19lbs, the Scorpion dc uses the 25lbs version. The Phantom is spooled Piscifun's Lunker 15lbs line cos I had to, they sent it to me. That and the Duel line is a little too expensive to buy and spool on a reel just for testing purposes hahaha.
It's worth noting that the Duel line costs $24sgd per 100m and it's a hardcoated fuse, meaning better casting performance in general. The Piscifun Lunker line is a normal 4 strand braid and costs ~$7sgd per 100m, yet the Phantom still achieved 2nd best in casting.

Can you measure the outside diameter of the spool in mm? Should be around 30 to 35 mm. I found the good casting reels, not for distant but for ease of casting, are around 32mm.

+William Bannister you can have a look at www.hedgehog-studio.co.jp, or www.japantackle.com. They sell aftermarket handles, spools and other parts for most of the big brand reels. Hedgehog studios has everything but Japan tackle tends to be about 10-15% cheaper for select parts so be sure to compare the prices on both sites before making a purchase.

Even so. I'm sure it's not going to have durability of a revo but for $70 on a reel that literally out casts the best $500 and $600 jdm reels I'd say that's value. And for light duty fishing like most ppl will use this for it might last quite a while. Graphite is stronger than most ppl think. As for the drag and gears these reels use the same as most others. Just facts.
