I’ve been dying to get out of the Dealership world for the last couple of years just because of this. Everyone around me all say the same thing “You spend too much time cleaning and wrapping harness and cleaning parts. You are going to lose so much money” “you are losing opportunities for future repairs” and I hate it. 😢
This truck will be so nice to work on if it ever needs any work done. The trucks I have to work on cost a kings ransom to put right again. So much butchery out here.

I've had Bill and Mike work on my truck over the last few years. I've used multiple other shops near Atlanta over the years and Bill's shop is the only shop that had everything to 100% when their repair on my truck was complete. Other shops I had used seemed to always leave something loose, disconnected, bolts completely missing, or they had broken other things during the repair process. Bill so true on those not having any pride or ownership in their work. We have three 6.4 Powerstrokes in the family. All have been purchased with blown motor and rebuilt from the same shop. My Dad bought a 2008 F450 and I made sure the machine shop was reputable and understood how to fix the engine. Forged delipped pistons, updated rockers, updated lifters, brass valve guides, etc. However on the turbo they only did an eBay special $50 rebuild kit and the turbo lost oil on the first toe of his 16K fifth wheel. After going the rounds we finally decided to use my brothers two post pull the cab and build the turbo the correct way with correct parts. Then we got the “while we’re in there” bug and fixed all the shortcuts from the builder. Needless to say we’ve decided we’re the only ones who will work on our vehicles again because we take pride in being safe on the road. Total in on the F450 $26K and it’s practically brand new with the front and rear suspension and engine. It’s just sad that people want a quick buck but will put everyone on the road in danger with shoddy work.
Mr. Hewitt, I’ve watched many, many, many of your videos, but what you just said here is the most relevant to the automotive repair world overall that I’ve ever seen. I wish every shop in the U S would watch, listen, and heed your advice. Thank you.

Never even seen a 6.0 look that good at the local dealers after being in this business for over 20 years most shop are more about numbers getting stuff in and out at fast as possible and most are not worried about the small details

last week I took by brand new RAM to a dealer in here in TN, for the very first oil change. Free for 2 years. Took the truck and didn't even check it. A few days later, i see oil on my driveway. I don't know what DF they did to mess up an oil change. That is a frikkin dealer in TN! The guy they had working on oil changes was a SLOB. U look at him for 5 seconds, and u feel nervous. I felt nervous when i saw him, and goddamit, he did screw something up! Now they fixed it, but they don't tell me what wasn't right.. I would pay a lot for a good mechanic around here
Ask an engine mechanic “what are the four strokes of a 4 stroke engine”. If they don’t know, they have no idea of the basic operating principles of an engine and have no business working on any engine. I used to work at a Caterpillar dealer with 50 plus techs and most did not know the answer.
I work for myself on these trucks and many more at 22 years old. The biggest problem i run into is running into a cheap customer. The parts they buy sometimes that i know are junk eats me up when i have to install them because i know there is always a chance that it will come back on me. The most i can do is tell them my recommendation and whats going to happen and ive gotten to where i have to turn down work for customer supplied parts because i cant risk my name getting taken down from junk parts. When i have had to do it, i do it like im installing my favorite, Oem. I do it to the best of my ability,like factory, everytime without cutting corners because if you dont it will come back and bite you right in the bottom. I know many of guys my age that dont even know how to set a split beam/click type torque wrench and it eats me up. People ask me what is my most favorite tool and the thing that pops into my head everytime is my torque wrenches. I thank my grandpa in heaven who was a mechanic for 42 years for teaching me his ways since i was young. Ive had more time in jobs than other people think its worth from making sure everything is back where it came from and taped and lumed like it should be and matching bolts where they should be and have gotten bitched at by old bosses for wanting to get the right stuff but ive always stood my ground and have done it the way i think its right. I always will. 6.0 is my favorite engine and ill stand behind them until the day i die and i dont care what people say, they are great engines when you take care of them, just like everything else. Love your content Bill, have learned a lot from you. Youre a dying breed but i vow to be the best mechanic i can so i can live to teach the way it needs to be done like you do and like my grandfather did.
So true. Tens of thousands spent on the purchase of a new truck to have head gaskets blow (6.0) or find out you bought a truck to throw away at 150k mi. (6.4).

To Bill’s point: I took pride in maintaining my trucks giving them whatever they needed and doing the work myself. Over these past 8 years, there were a few customers that I had to either fire or just refer them to someone else because I refused to sacrifice my quality of work. When you get your truck back from me, concerns you are aware of and unaware of are resolved, the engine is spotless, it runs smooth and the truck itself is clean inside and out. My customers leave happy with a truck they can trust and depend on. By the Grace of God I never have to advertise, because pride in workmanship speaks for itself.
wow respect your work alot, wish the guy that bullet proofed our 350 would watch this and Learn!!! 5 years later im having to replace all injectors (only replaced 2 ,didnt know about deisels that much but he does) live and learn but hard to find a diesel mechcanic in this area
used to watch your videos all the time few years ago, never thought I would buy a diesel in the near future. Never really towed heavy, but I’ve always liked having a pickup. Have had several half tons in my young life Came across a single owner 2006 F250 ext cab 4x4 Lariat 140k mile truck from really nice older couple, had receipts from year ago for new turbo, EGR system and i believe an oil cooler too. Bought it for a REALLY GOOD price. Have loved it, haven’t towed super heavy hut everything i’ve hauled has been piece of cake. Truck did great in snow (after realizing manual locking hubs was a thing again). Would take truck to you for headstuds and gasket but i am on west coast. Thanks for everything Bill!
"when the student is ready the teacher will appear". What you said is true but something I see a lot of is lack of motivation on the "student" side. Can't find people whom want to dive in and are hungry to work that can recognize mediocre from excellent.
Bill: So on point and a great video for you to do as a business owner. I'm still dealing with fixing the mess a "highly reviewed" diesel performance shop made with my 6.7 powerstroke (broken manifold studs). It's totally f-ed up when the owner of the shop refuses to look deeper into issues I report after bringing the truck back 5+ times and getting blamed for being a truck hypochondriac. I finally took my truck to the Ford dealer out of desperation and within a couple of hours of a rookie tech taking a look, most of the major issues were found. Boost leaks. A leaky exhaust manifold. A leaky aftermarket downpipe (made the mistake of doing a 2015 turbo upgrade). These were the parts the first shop REPLACED! Everything they touched was wrong and I was charged for parts and service that wasn't performed (replace ALL the studs). The worst punch to the gut was having to have the DPF cleaned...twice (the symptom is not the cause)! Bolts over torqued, turbo mounted off center, exhaust leaks in the cab that would make you want to vomit during regen. Nope, they couldn't find any issues with it, not the whole bloody shop full of mechanics who were joy riding around in my truck for a month. Needless to say they will be refunding my money or I'll see them in court...once I get my truck back from Ford. If I knew what I know now I could have avoided all of this but I had no desire to become a master diesel mechanic. It's not my shtick, but my hand was forced and I know more now about diesel mechanics than I ever wanted to. I just needed an honest expert to take care of my truck but it's so difficult to find honest experts these days. You are right, people like that will survive while the others will flounder. I wish you were located in my state. Good luck and blessings to you making it through 2023 and beyond. We're all going to need it.
I drive gas powered van and car currently. It's a pain finding a shop and mechanic I can trust. After being burned and lied to over the years I have a tough time trusting them. I moved to a new area and my wife got her car fixed and they messed it up bad. I finally found a great service center with a great owner that has top notch mechanics on staff. It's very rare that I have to take a car back to fix what they fixed already. But when something does happen they don't bs about it and get it fixed.

can you rebuild a NAVISTAR 7.3? mine generally is a good runner.. but someties I dont like the mechanical sounds it makes.... almost sounds like flat lifters or a rattle, etc... so I keep thinking I should just get it rebuilt before it goes bad....
How cold should the A/C be on a 2012 F350 power stroke.? I’m having problems getting it to cool down the inside of my truck. I have taken it to ford but it’s not that cold. It’s blowing about 60 off the dash, shouldn’t it be about 40?

It’s tough to find quality mechanics and when you do hold on to them like a good doctor. Same thing goes with all tradesman. I swear that I would bring my 7.3 to Bill from California because I trust him and they do quality work. As the old saying goes, when you buy quality you only cry once!
Bill has me messed up. I look at his 6.0 rebuild resales 30k trucks. Its very hard not to just goto a 6.7 newer. But i also know his 6.0 rebuild could be better. So IDK
I always like your stuff Bill, but I am damn sure I can’t afford work like that ! I don’t want a brand new second hand truck every time ! I want something that will go to work and come back every day,and stop on command, for years, with minimal maintenence. Find a mechanic that other mechanics rate, that you can talk to, that tells the truth and answers the phone when he has your motor.
Ill tell two big factors in shops with techs that kills pride is poor management due to the lack of qualities Bill listed and the bigger one is FLAT RATE. Manufacturers and warranty companies slashing tech hours to the point jobs arnt even doable anymore. Leads to everyone being unhappy. Tech gets shorted, customer gets a shitty repair so they complain and the shop ends up loosing money then in the long run the manufacturer looses because they loose customer retention. Step over dollars to pick up pennies.
Hey there I’ve got a question. I’ve got a 2019 6.7 powerstroke. Yesterday I noticed bright green pure coolant dripping out of tail pipe (or atleast I think it was coolant) it was about 40 degrees out and the truck had been idling for about 15 min. I had shut it off and I noticed it then when a bit of the liquid was in the tip. Is this even possible? What would cause this? How serious is this?

Incredible. I have had a f350 6.0. for 6 months at a FORD specialist. $15,000 so far. Still have this truck at this FORD dealership. So far new glow plugs and wires. High pressure oil pumd. With the new o ring. All NEW REAR breaks. And this truck still does not start and run. Amazing how professional ford machines have no pride. Now they are shot gunning possible either all injectors or fcim. And still the not have a pick up date yet.oh yeah in this 6 to 7 months. Now a rat,mouse,or squirrel moved in the cab and ate the seat and most of the wires under the dash. The money I have thrown away is crazy.
I've thrown away over 16k in the last 6 months over ONE broken exhaust manifold stud on my 6.7. It sounds ridiculous but yet another example of how diesel maintenance can spiral out of control and how much a bad shop can screw you over.

Yeah. My 350 needs head gasket already. 10k later the new diesel tech I took it to says they more than likely didn't torque the bolts correctly.
wow respect your work alot, wish the guy that bullet proofed our 350 would watch this and Learn!!! 5 years later im having to replace all injectors (only replaced 2 ,didnt know about deisels that much but he does) live and learn but hard to find a diesel mechcanic in this area
used to watch your videos all the time few years ago, never thought I would buy a diesel in the near future. Never really towed heavy, but I’ve always liked having a pickup. Have had several half tons in my young life
Came across a single owner 2006 F250 ext cab 4x4 Lariat 140k mile truck from really nice older couple, had receipts from year ago for new turbo, EGR system and i believe an oil cooler too. Bought it for a REALLY GOOD price.
Have loved it, haven’t towed super heavy hut everything i’ve hauled has been piece of cake. Truck did great in snow (after realizing manual locking hubs was a thing again). Would take truck to you for headstuds and gasket but i am on west coast. Thanks for everything Bill!
It has become an insidious epidemic of lack of properly trained mechanics. It is just getting worse with no end in sight.
"when the student is ready the teacher will appear". What you said is true but something I see a lot of is lack of motivation on the "student" side. Can't find people whom want to dive in and are hungry to work that can recognize mediocre from excellent.

Bill: So on point and a great video for you to do as a business owner. I'm still dealing with fixing the mess a "highly reviewed" diesel performance shop made with my 6.7 powerstroke (broken manifold studs). It's totally f-ed up when the owner of the shop refuses to look deeper into issues I report after bringing the truck back 5+ times and getting blamed for being a truck hypochondriac. I finally took my truck to the Ford dealer out of desperation and within a couple of hours of a rookie tech taking a look, most of the major issues were found. Boost leaks. A leaky exhaust manifold. A leaky aftermarket downpipe (made the mistake of doing a 2015 turbo upgrade). These were the parts the first shop REPLACED! Everything they touched was wrong and I was charged for parts and service that wasn't performed (replace ALL the studs). The worst punch to the gut was having to have the DPF cleaned...twice (the symptom is not the cause)! Bolts over torqued, turbo mounted off center, exhaust leaks in the cab that would make you want to vomit during regen. Nope, they couldn't find any issues with it, not the whole bloody shop full of mechanics who were joy riding around in my truck for a month. Needless to say they will be refunding my money or I'll see them in court...once I get my truck back from Ford. If I knew what I know now I could have avoided all of this but I had no desire to become a master diesel mechanic. It's not my shtick, but my hand was forced and I know more now about diesel mechanics than I ever wanted to. I just needed an honest expert to take care of my truck but it's so difficult to find honest experts these days. You are right, people like that will survive while the others will flounder. I wish you were located in my state. Good luck and blessings to you making it through 2023 and beyond. We're all going to need it.
I drive gas powered van and car currently. It's a pain finding a shop and mechanic I can trust. After being burned and lied to over the years I have a tough time trusting them. I moved to a new area and my wife got her car fixed and they messed it up bad. I finally found a great service center with a great owner that has top notch mechanics on staff. It's very rare that I have to take a car back to fix what they fixed already. But when something does happen they don't bs about it and get it fixed.
Bill, love the channel and respect your work. I’m close by, and do have a question. Do you do standard maintenance or just primarily focus on big jobs? If so, by appointment only? Oil changes, fuel filters, etc..

can you rebuild a NAVISTAR 7.3? mine generally is a good runner.. but someties I dont like the mechanical sounds it makes.... almost sounds like flat lifters or a rattle, etc... so I keep thinking I should just get it rebuilt before it goes bad....
How cold should the A/C be on a 2012 F350 power stroke.? I’m having problems getting it to cool down the inside of my truck. I have taken it to ford but it’s not that cold. It’s blowing about 60 off the dash, shouldn’t it be about 40?

It’s tough to find quality mechanics and when you do hold on to them like a good doctor. Same thing goes with all tradesman. I swear that I would bring my 7.3 to Bill from California because I trust him and they do quality work. As the old saying goes, when you buy quality you only cry once!
Joe is by far the 💯 %best mechanic that I have ever worked with he is the best I have ever seen 100%the best he’s the example of pride in work !
Bill has me messed up. I look at his 6.0 rebuild resales 30k trucks. Its very hard not to just goto a 6.7 newer. But i also know his 6.0 rebuild could be better. So IDK
Bill and Mike you are correct , only thing you have the storefront to be able to handle any type customer and thats a Great Thing.
I always like your stuff Bill, but I am damn sure I can’t afford work like that ! I don’t want a brand new second hand truck every time ! I want something that will go to work and come back every day,and stop on command, for years, with minimal maintenence. Find a mechanic that other mechanics rate, that you can talk to, that tells the truth and answers the phone when he has your motor.

Ill tell two big factors in shops with techs that kills pride is poor management due to the lack of qualities Bill listed and the bigger one is FLAT RATE. Manufacturers and warranty companies slashing tech hours to the point jobs arnt even doable anymore. Leads to everyone being unhappy. Tech gets shorted, customer gets a shitty repair so they complain and the shop ends up loosing money then in the long run the manufacturer looses because they loose customer retention. Step over dollars to pick up pennies.
Hey there I’ve got a question. I’ve got a 2019 6.7 powerstroke. Yesterday I noticed bright green pure coolant dripping out of tail pipe (or atleast I think it was coolant) it was about 40 degrees out and the truck had been idling for about 15 min. I had shut it off and I noticed it then when a bit of the liquid was in the tip. Is this even possible? What would cause this? How serious is this?

Incredible. I have had a f350 6.0. for 6 months at a FORD specialist. $15,000 so far. Still have this truck at this FORD dealership. So far new glow plugs and wires. High pressure oil pumd. With the new o ring. All NEW REAR breaks. And this truck still does not start and run. Amazing how professional ford machines have no pride. Now they are shot gunning possible either all injectors or fcim. And still the not have a pick up date yet.oh yeah in this 6 to 7 months. Now a rat,mouse,or squirrel moved in the cab and ate the seat and most of the wires under the dash. The money I have thrown away is crazy.
I've thrown away over 16k in the last 6 months over ONE broken exhaust manifold stud on my 6.7. It sounds ridiculous but yet another example of how diesel maintenance can spiral out of control and how much a bad shop can screw you over.
