Making A Celtic Knot Pen Blank
Вставка

- Inspired by comments made by Richard Morley from Woodcraft BPW This video shows how I make the blanks to make the Celtic Knot pens. It might not be the best or easiest way to do this but it's the way I do them with the limited equipment at my disposal.
I am not a regular video maker so the production might not be particularly good but it should give a flavour of what's involved in making the Celtic Knot blank.

As a pen turner myself I would like to say you have done the hobby justice and shown what can be achieved with a little patience. I make a lot of my own blanks and really enjoy seeing other people making the effort, Great tutorial.
All the best
Tony
Thank you so much for your comments Tony, it was fun to do. I'm chuffed to bits so many people have likes the video. I don't normally do videos but I was asked to do this one.
I always use the band saw to trim the extra wood off after gluing. I usually make 3 or 4 blanks at a time. doesn't take much longer once set up... then after waiting all the time for glue to dry etc.. .you have multiple blanks ready. Yep.. blank must be square, and drill the center... Nice Job!! I am still carrying the first one I made about 4 or 5 years ago... I really enjoy giving them as gifts to people I like :-)
Nice video, music was a good volume for me. Concise instructions always help. This is the first Celtic knot pen I've seen with a single knot on the lower portion of the pen. What a very nice look.
you got me started doing the celtic knots 2 years ago!! now im doing 6 loop knots in pen blanks
Bob just watched this again along with a few more on the "tube" This is one of the best.
oh wow Eddie that's so kind of you to say so, Thank you
Cheers
Bob
Music: AWSOME!
Technique: AWSOME!
Finished result:AWSOME!
Thanks for doing this Bob! Been waiting for this, like a kid a Christmas, I know there are already some of these celtic knot videos about, but yours is one of the best! Enjoyable and instructive.
Particularly like the tip :cut a few of these
Splines once the fence is set (sounds obvious, and it IS, but I never think to do something like that. ..that's why I hate making spline for mitres! ;-)
Also the sled you use for the bandsaw is really interesting. Same theory as for a table saw, again obvious, but only once you see one in use! Top Video!
Oh and nicely put, 'for giving you the idea', should have put. "Fine! Here it is! Now stop nagging me like a old housewife and watch it!" ;-) Thanks Bob! 😊
As I recall correctly, it was more of a 'demand' for the video :o)
I'm so glad you enjoyed it. I think it took longer to edit than to make the blank and film it.
Cheers Bob
He he he! I seen a couple of these celtic knot videos Bob, but I could never seem to find one that really explained it. Which yours definitely does!
This is such a cool idea. I'll be running a couple of these, as pens, but i think it would also be nice to put into any spindle turning, lamp stands, vase/ goblets, even a table leg. Great job!
Excellent! The best video I have seen describing this. Thank you for sharing!
Thank you for watching and commenting, pleased you enjoyed it.
Cheers
Bob
Incredible job Bob!
This was a great tutorial for anyone wanting to make a Celtic knot. Celtic knots also look great for dressing up tool handles. I hope you make many more videos because you have a knack for it.
Regards,
Bob
Thanks for your generous comments Bob - I'm not sure I've got the knack, I think I was very lucky I managed to cobble together something out of a bunch of clips I took with an assortment of devices. Richard asked for it a while ago and I just went and had a go.
Yes the knot would look nice on a tool handle - I might give it a try.
Cheers Bob
Nice! I gotta try this. Thanks for doing the video!
Thanks Steve, I'd love to see what a celebrity and youtube star like you will make of it.
Very cool! I like your process to insert the wood.
Passion Woodworking thank you - On my first attempt I cut all the way through and I had real problems aligning the pieces to glue them up - this way is much easier and quicker.
Thanks for watching
Cheers
Bob
Lovely pen, thanks for the tips
James
Thank you James, I hope you find the tips useful and thanks for watching
Cheers
Bob
Great work Bob!
Thanks Kevin, it's not a great production but I gave it a go.
Awesome Methodology.. and a Great Product too..
Thank you, so pleased you like it.
cheers
Bob
Thank you.
Very good instruction. Thanks for sharing.
You are welcome. Thanks for watching & commenting

Bob
absolutely love this look! great job.
Thank you. I'd like to try a few more on a similar theme.
Plaustrum Crafts RJBWoodTurner told us about your channel. I've subscribed and will be watching for more great videos. He also got me wanting to do pens. Just waiting on a few more items before I begin. I'll definitely give this technique a try.
Shadetree Woodworking Bob from RJBWoodTurner got me into turning with his enthusiasm and
passion for the discipline, I got my lathe last October and he's been
very supportive - pen turning is great fun and once you've mastered the
basics the options are almost endless. I'd like to have a go at casting
my own acrylic blanks but that's a long way off yet. Good
luck with your pens, I hope you'll show us some of them. Regards Bob
You can count on it and I look forward to seeing more from you.
Great video. I have made a few of those pens but used my table saw. Think I will switch over to my band saw. I have used CA glue on mine and they come out great. I will have to give wood glue a shot and see if there is a difference, besides drying time. Thanks for sharing.
Thank you for watching and commenting
Thanks for the great tips.
+Chris Henson Thank you and thanks for watching.
Very clever
Nice pen, I have only a 50/50 success rate when I make these, something is always a little off and the knots do not always come out right. Great video.
woodturningjohn Thanks John. My first couple were failures but now I use this method the success rate has improved. I also drill these out in the lathe chuck using special pen blank jaws now, I found trying to get the blank dead centre on the pillar drill (drill press) to be very difficult. Cheers Bob.
Magnificent finish. Just wondering would CA glue be quicker?
Very cool.
Thank you
Just a little too fast for me to see where you made the third and fourth cuts.
I might be stupid and may have missed the info, what angle did you cut? 45 deg? thats one of the best knots I'v seen cheers for sharing
Hi, thanks for watching. It's been a while since I last used the jig but I think it was 45 degree cut.
nice job
+Erik Anderson Thank you
Cool. Did you make a video showing the lathing process as well?
Thanks, so pleased you like it. Yes I did make a video turning a celtic knot. It wasn't this blank though but another I made.
It's here ua-cam.com/video/AxeA7l5_5zU/v-deo.html
Thanks for watching
Regards Bob
awesome!!
Thank you and thanks for watching
Really impressive symmetry. I have found that my two biggest problems are making sure my blank is square and that I drill dead center. How do you square your blanks?
Thank you Mario. The blanks in the video were already planed square but for others I have done I rough cut on the band saw and then hand planed smooth. You would get better results with a table saw but don't have one, so I use what I've got. Cheers Bob

I was asked to make this video a while ago #wòodwork
do you have a video of the finished pen from this blank????
Terry Ambrose Unfortunately not Terry, I only took still photos that are on the end of the video, to be honest the video was running long and I thought that there's loads of pen turning videos already on youtube, but if you think it might be worthwhile I could always try another blank and include the turning - thanks for commenting Cheers Bob
Plaustrum Crafts Thanks Bob........I just purchased a Rockwell Bladerunner X-2, attaching a small 1 gallon dry vac, and turning pens in my den........going to copy your Jig.....really love the Celtic Knots...ought to be fun.....we'll see.........thanks again, terry
