    I was an Imagineer in Glendale, CA, beginning in 1986 and it wasn't uncommon to use Imagineers for the rides. In the first scene, Footlight Parade, those sequined bathing suit-clad bombshells were me. I posed for weeks for an Imagineering sculpture. A friend let me know the ride was closing...sad to see. It was really cool to see this video as it had been 25 years since I rode the actual ride. Great memories flood back of working with some very amazing, talented and fun people in my younger years. I'll have to show this video to my kids :-)

      Wow, that's honestly so cool! You should try to get one of the figures for yourself as a keepsake. I bet you have many really interesting story's about working for imagineering at Disney.

      TPMvids I have a friend whose an imagineer for the parks and worked on Shanghai Hong Kong and all the other Parks as well he works so much he has his own jet to fly back and forth because it became cheaper than them getting him an airline ticket. we were talking and discussing some stuff recently about the state of the parks and upcoming projects and rumors. I've since put some to bed and found validity to some. since I'm a former cast member and in retaliation to the whole Nintendo park that Universal building and the fact that universals and Paramount are in talks on the fact that they're trying to purchase the rights for Star Trek I had suggested that they should contact a very good friend of universals a Mr Peter Jackson the same man who did there King Kong ride but for them to go and secure the order to get the rights for lord of rings and he said it was a brilliant idea and they actually are in talks this week and Disney could secure that project. They are also looking to buy the rights to Dragon Ball Z and other Anime for exclusive themeing. And lastly a New Indiana jones ride as well to be opened.

      bigevilworldwide1 you hit the nail on the head and it's why I'm ecstatic that Iger is stepping down after the completion of the star wars park. He needs to go. He's gouged pricing and ruined most parks and attractions and films haven't had the warmth Disney was so famous for.

    I LOVED this ride. I mean it makes sense for them to build a Mickey ride considering there isn't one but did they have to get rid of this classic attraction? Surely they could've built the Mickey ride somewhere else or replaced a ride that doesn't have as much history to it

    • @TylerRodriguez
      @TylerRodriguez 7 років тому +11

      Sub Par That's upsetting :(

    • @TPMvids
      @TPMvids  7 років тому +56

      Either that, or they could have built the new Mickey ride somewhere else, just to allow the ride to be open at DHS while all the construction is going on. It's pretty well known that the park will get a name change in the near future and the specific theme of the park will also be changing. With those changes, I don't how well the Great Movie Ride would have eventually fit in the park, but the ride still had a good 2 years before it may have been absolutely necessary to close.

    • @swarlock
      @swarlock 7 років тому +14

      I knew something like this was going to happen eventually. It was no secret that DHS was losing its purpose when I saw very few people going into The Great Movie Ride over the last 21 years I've lived here in Florida. Most patrons would rather be immersed in an attraction than know how something is done on the spot. Considering that are only FOUR rides to go on it would cost more to expand the land around it so that there would be more to do.

    • @swarlock

      If you google image great movie ride demolition, you can see where they are taking the grating and some of the pipes from the alien scene out... definitely not preserving them as the grating is bent and crumpled up and thenpioes are being taken out in sections. I'm sure they will preserve some of it, like maybe SOME of the animatronics, maybe they will show up at The yearly expo. Also found a pic somewhere that claims to be the car from the gangster scene in some kind of bone yard.

    For me, it's really upsetting to see this park loosing its original theme and charm. This park was originally themed to pay homage to some of the best movies. I remember coming here as a kid and feeling like I was on the set of a film, and that was a truly magical experience to me as an 11 year old kid. Attractions such as The Backlot Tour and The Great Movie Ride definitely helped to create that experience. Skip forwards 10 years, to my last visit in 2016.
    On entering the park, our entire party with wheelchairs had to very quickly find a bit of crowded sidewalk to stand on to make way for the Storm Troopers that periodically mark through an area which does not feel appropriate for them to occupy. I get that for a young Star Wars fan, this could also be a magical experience, however it's not one that truly needs to leave the Star Wars themed section of the park and made for an awkward experience for my party. I just think it's a shame that the charm that I travel a few thousand miles to see every other year is being lost in this park; not to enhance the experience of dedicated guests, but instead to milk that Star Wars cash cow. At least they haven't completely wrecked Epcot, Magic Kingdom or Animal Kingdom yet.

      @Beetlejuice_88 7 років тому +2

      Nugget's Nugget of Friendship well actually they may auction off the names and prints or sell them in the back store for cast connections store. Cast members have a cast member only store that sell ride props and merchandise and more for 50 to 80% off. As a former CM I know this all to well lol spent most of my paychecks back to them. Or finally two options is it goes to the Disney Vault for later use for an attraction or it remains intact as is until Iger steps down upon completion of the star wars park.

    My family and I have only been to Disney World once, we visited in December 2001 to celebrate Walt's 100th birthday. I was pretty young at the time so I only have a few memories of that trip, but one of them was how much I loved the Great Movie Ride. I remember passing through Mary Poppins, Indiana Jones and the Wizard of Oz and thinking it was one of the coolest rides ever. Now that I'm older I have a much deeper appreciation of classic "golden age" movies and I'm very sad that this ride is closing. Thanks so much for all these secrets, it truly was a great achievement by Disney.

    I dont like the fact they got rid of the great movie ride , i understand u have to make change and change is good sometimes but they took away some of the major and awesome rides and what made MGM , they said they wanted to bring Hollywood to the east coast, the great movie ride and back lot tour was part of that , and Animations they have taken , thats where it all started at least give us that , i feel there erasing a part of Walt and Roy

    • @happiestplace3754
      @happiestplace3754 7 років тому +9

      Ronda Lombardo, Walt and Roy? Walt and Roy had absolutely nothing to do with this park. They were both long gone when it was built. This is why I don't care about changes made to WDW. I only care about changes made to Disneyland because THAT was Walt's park, the one he built and cared for. Everything else came after Walt's death, so it doesn't matter if it changes because it was never "Walt's" to begin with.

    7:31 I remember show A! I was little, but I remember the cowboy that took over our ride was snarky, yet super nice. If my memory servers me right, after the track was taken, we got to the big structure with the gem eyes, and the cowboy turned to bones when he touched it. Again, this happened when I was 5, so a little hazy, but correct me if I'm wrong

    really gonna miss this one. it had become a sort of "family tradition" for me and mine. every time we have been to the parks since this ride's advent it's always on the list of must do's. i always loved the Alien scene and going through the "horror" section with all the skulls and mummies everywhere. i remember my cousin Ben and i riding it for the first time in 1992 when were 16 and 14 respectively. that was the year we were allowed to cut away from the family and just go experience the park "on our own". neither he nor i had cell phones to stay in touch with my parents! cell phones really weren't a "thing" yet for that matter. scary times they were indeed you little whiper snappers! i remember we rode it several times in a row just to watch the Wicked Witch. we were trying to figure out if she were a live actress or not. so glad we got to take the kids last year. my daughter and nephew were plenty old enough that they'll remember it. my sweet little son was a month away from his second birthday, so i doubt he'll remember, but he *can* say he rode it before it was gone!

    • @FilmThePoliceFTP
      @FilmThePoliceFTP 6 років тому

      Yep I was allowed to do this as well. Though I was 11, but I had been going so long, I knew how to get around. No cell phones as this was 1996. I lived going off on my own. Had my own Disney dollars (do they still do Disney dollars?) and anything I'd need to make it through the day. If I had a friend with me it was even better, but I enjoyed the time going off by myself as well.

      James Swift I'm pretty sure the one in Disney world will close. Disney seem to want to purge all their outside sources and use what they own to save money and since they decided not to renew the TCM contract, they probably won't renew the cbs one.

    • @LarryOfilms
      @LarryOfilms 7 років тому

      I hope that is the case but there's so much twilght zone references and not to mention Rod Sterling narrates the ride, so doubt they would go through all that trouble to revamp everything, I mean they could've did that with this ride and just put scenes of movies from their archive. I see that they are trying to be self sufficient which is why they aquired Marvel and Star Wars and I'm sure there would be a marvel land soon.

      bigevilworldwide1 Bob is a man that doesn't have imagination, he rather just buy it. If anyone has embodied the spirit of Walt it was Michael. Yes he was brash and wasn't perfect but he made Disney feel like Disney. He did what he had to do to save the mouse ears. From Day one he was in imagineering planning new ideas. Bob is just a talking head that is out of his league and should be running chase bank instead of a creative company. As a former cast member I saw the difference between the Eisner era and Bob's. It didn't feel like Disney anymore so I quit. Disney War by James B Stewart documents how Disney would have been sold off in pieces probably to a Japanese company and today Disney world would have looked more like Nara Dreamland or Six Flags

      steve blum Me too! I'm totally blind so the alien itself never scared me, but the scene's atmosphere sure did. The smell in the room, the self-destruct alarm, and all the random bursts of steam (is that what it was?) always made me want to get out ASAP. Wizard of Oz was my second favorite because that movie's a classic. And so was this ride. I sure wish it didn't have to go. The Mickey ride sounds fun, but it should have replaced Voyage instead.

    I don't think they should shut down this whole thing for a Mickey ride! The crew worked so hard and took a lot of the time! For it to be closed is heartbreaking, preposterous. It was original and a new experience for the children and adults who have watched and adored the movies! It brought you a feeling that's familiar like you remember, but it's still a blur. You felt like you were in the movie or it brought you back to when you were younger. It brought you memories!
    What a shame to waste that ride on something that has already been made! I mean come on! How many disney related rides do we have? Tons.
    This ride was absolutely one of a kind!
    I guess a mickey ride is new, sure it would be as awesome as the others, but you can't throw away an attraction like this!

  • @Brandis13
    @Brandis13 7 років тому +1

    I loved this ride and always got goosebumps when I heard the opening music "Hooray for Hollywood". The ride already died a bit for me when they reduced the spiel of the cast members guiding through the ride. A great cast member (and in my opinion, most of them were) added so much to the ride with their narration!
    I liked the western scene much better, but unfortunately more often got the gangster scene. I just thought the bank robbery was much cooler with the fire and all.
    The Sensurround effect in the final film montage was also very cool (the loud rumbling noise when Indy runs from the stone ball or when the Millenium Falcon enters Hyperspace) but if I remember correctly this effect was taken out a few years ago, maybe when they updated it with the sponsoring of TCM.
    Ah, this ride will be missed very much by me. Pretty much up there with my beloved Adventurer's Club and Comedy Warehouse!

  • @carriem2434
    @carriem2434 7 років тому +4

    While I'm not jumping up and down at the idea of closing and GMR, it is understandable. Disney's contract with TCM ends at the end of this year. Disney wasn't thrilled with the idea of using other companies's properties in their attractions. They decided to replace the attraction ASAP, as they didn't think that it was worth it to pay for outdated IPs.

    Disney needs to stop with updating stuff. First, they got rid of Tower of Terror and replaced it with a big huge ugly building. Then, they got rid of TGMR and are going to replace it with a Mickey Mouse rip off of Big Thunder Mountain. And they a rumored to redo California Screaming and redo it with the Incredibles! Stupid right? The only good update is that they are rumored to do an Indiana Jones land in Animal Kingdom. I would much rather have an Indiana Jones land then a Star Wars land, even though I do like Star Wars.
