Super late to the party here, but this is honestly such a well composed, atmospheric, and moving interpretation of the original. I’m currently sitting in the high rise floor of my University’s library, overlooking campus through the thick window panes, two months out from Christmas, and wishing that I could just jump ahead to that time of year so that I can be surrounded by loved ones again, presents under the well-decorated tree, fireplace hopping and crackling in the living room, the kitchen stocked with comfort food, all because of this one video I stumbled on while looking for French horn pieces. I am also a pianist and horn player and I just came across Bethany's arrangement of In the Bleak Midwinter. I have three master's degrees, one in horn, piano and music theory. The more you know or understand about a subject, the harder it is to be impressed with the work of another unless they are incredibly talented. I say this because, as discriminating as I am when it comes to musical arrangements of today, Bethany's arrangement here really grabbed me. It's beautiful, and I say this with critical ears. The interchange between the horn and the piano is extremely well balanced, going beyond a soloist and accompanist scenario to become a well balanced duet. The intimacy between the two instruments strikes a common familiarity with beautiful voicing, each instrument accompanying the other at different times. Her choice of harmony is just edgy enough to sound slightly modern but never losing it's traditional focus and characteristics. Bravo Bethany!!!
