It's amazing how people assume that she didn't make it too far because of the fact that she's dark skinned. Why do people keep bringing up skin tone it has nothing to do with it. It has to do with money it's a lot of light skin and white artist struggling and trying to get famous. Money pays for advertising. to be perfectly honest I didn't even know this girl was a singer and I heard her songs a few times and didn't connect the two. Stop making everything about race even the biggest artist were nobodies at some point.
+4evamibae In a lot of ways it is about race. Alot of darker girls are seen as less marketable and don't receive marketing budgets for that reason. Also people may excited to see a darkskinned, pop star because finally they see someone they can identify with and just want them to be bigger than they are.
I agree somewhat with you but most of the time it's black people who make a big deal about skin tone. Labels aren't just handing out checks to r&b artist like in the past because it doesn't sell like it use too. these days you have to have some type of platform for them to invest. If people are so concerned with artist looking like them(which I think is ridiculous you should like somebody for their talent) they should actually support them and stop complaining. Also in todays music, artist lack the work ethic. Everyone is so numb and lazy with marketing because of social media they don't realize everything they do can discredit their brand before they start one.
+4evamibae I really appreciate your thoughts on this matter but you're looking at it from the outside in. As someone who actually works in music / entertainment, I can tell you the reason why R&B doesn't sell like it used to is because it's not marketed like it used to be. And in regards people wanting artists that look like them it's not ridiculous. If you're non-white, you rarely see someone that looks like you on TV. Majority of what is on TV or in entertainment are white people and when your black, asian, hispanic etc and you see an artist on TV that reflects you, it's galvanizing. Social media also doesn't make artists lazy. It's much harder to build a brand from the ground up via social media then it is when you're given a 1 million dollar budget to put a song on radio.
