5:20 when he speaks instead of singing - AUGH. Whether we notice it or not, its the first time ANYONE speaks in the entire show, and the way it pops is magnificent. Out of everything in this scene THAT'S what gets me. Maybe there's a metaphor there, in how they're speaking more as friends than singing as two people in Moscow's high society. There's something very romantic about Pierre putting aside all of the airs they've been using to confess his love. I love it.

Tbh, this moment is the one part of the show I really don't like. The fact that the words to help Natasha are that Pierre would marry her, to feel happy that a (much older!) man would marry her is just upsetting. The point of Great Comet I felt were that all the characters were sort of reversed ideas of their archetype. Natasha being the young helpless romantic who everyone loves, ends up breaking off her engagement due to falling for a truly manipulative man. And although I know in the book Pierre and Natasha marry, as it was common for older man to marry young women, to me it just feels like a complete betrayal to the whole show. I would have preferred it if Pierre's words were to consol her that she has her life ahead and everyone makes mistakes despite her high society looking down on that. Or something of that kind. Would have been much more fulfilling of a ending.

@@annarose932 The entire reason she thinks her life is over is because of the mess with Anatole/Andrey though, her future literally DOES depend on marrying! I agree that it is a little unsatisfying, but I do still like it. I think its very romantic. I did forget how old Pierre is though

I kinda agree with both of you - I love the way the spoken lines are used to show and stress the special bond these two characters have, even after interacting for the first time in the entire musical, but I also like to view Pierre‘s confession as more of a really strong and not necessarily romantic attachment and connection to Natasha and an encouragement for her to go on with life - they both sort of "give" each other so much - as opposed to a legit marriage proposal. As for the age, I think Pierre is either younger than or the same age as Andrey in the book though, so you could argue that Andrey‘s engagement to her is just as weird.

In the book they marry when she’s 20 and he’s 28, I think?

@@TheMechanicalHound It‘s been a while since I‘ve read War and Peace, so I‘m not sure, but maybe? I‘m pretty sure he‘s a few years older than 28 by then though. She could also be a bit older than 20, for she‘s, I believe, 19 during Great Comet, and I don‘t know how much time passes in the book between the Comet events and their marriage

This is the instant Pierre fully realizes that he is in love with Natasha... The last moments of this musical are the most beautiful.

Right? I especially love the simplicity of this moment in the show. No crazy staging, no crazy lighting, even the music is so plain and faint, and yet it works so well. I think for me the most objectively beautiful moment in the show is No One Else, but the entire end is certainly close.

I needed to share that the first 3 notes of “Pierre Natasha” is the same notes that make up the first chord of “Pierre”. Maybe this is showing that Pierre has found someone that he has connected with and it’s given his life meaning again? I don’t know anything about music theory.

So beautiful...I wish there was a better quality shot of Josh when Pierre confesses his love to Natasha. The woman in the audience at 3:33 who is leaning over crying...that would have been me. Denee's cry a moment before wrecks me. (Also, the irony: Josh is the brightest, handsomest, best man.)
