- Aragall sings Che gelida manina at the Met. Date unknown, from old VHS. It can hardly be done better. Aragall was a great tenor and is underrated.
This clip comes (I think) from a documentary that also has been uploaded to youtube. The sound of the documentary is a half note sharp though. This copy has the correct pitch.
Saw him Tosca around 1991 in Barcelona with Eva Marton and Milnes. The audience went crazy for him. The least known tenor from Spain. For my money he was the best.
I cannot believe that I am finding this tenor just now! I have never heard such elegancy before.

Pavarotti said that when he was coming up that there were three great young tenors: himself, Domingo and Aragall; and that Aragall was probably the best of the bunch.
Aragall was truly one of the most highly-underrated beautiful voices of the 20th century.

He is singing in the original key in a live performance - lots of other tenors transposed it down by a half-step.....

Wondrous Jaume or 'Giacomo' Aragall, his voice was irresistibly pure, clear and full. One of the great artists that made it look easy but his phrasing, the way he takes his time to squeeze a little more understanding of what he is saying, is simply beautiful. He was understated, did not showboat, just had absolute, classical singing integrity which actually provokes a deeper reaction in the listener. He did not need to show off, simply open that golden larynx and make the angels smile.
How ironic, people still going for 3 tenors. This man is so organic and so gorgeous, way stronger than any of the 3.

I love Pavarotti and domingo's singing in 1980 and before. Carreras sounded like GDS with open handsome tone, great performer too. But at the time of 3 tenors, it was the worse time for all in case of voice.

I agree! It really is a shame his nerves got in the way of what could have been a much greater career. On the other hand, Aragall sang in all the great opera houses in the world and retired with his voice in tact. a true class act!!! :)
tante volte ho ascoltato Aragall( la prima volta nel 1970 o 1971) a teatro per mia grande fortuna.Si perche' la sua voce dal vivo era ben altro.La voce di Aragall era di una bellezza metafisica e conturbante,in disco simile a quella di Di Stefano.Ma a teatro suonavano in maniera molto differente ed e' stata una gioia grandissima averli ascoltati entrambi.

Un incanto. Ma guarda se doveva soffrire di depressione e nervosismo. E' come se la natura dicesse: a te ho già dato troppo, quindi adesso ti tolgo qualcosa. Mi rattrista molto che abbia sofferto così tanto quando sarebbe dovuto essere l'uomo più felice del mondo per quella voce straordinaria... e anche l'aspetto, che non guasta mai !!

I can't believe I never heard of Jaime Aragall until I listened to him perform the role of Turiddu in "Cavalleria Rusticana" with the New Jersey State Opera under the direction of Alfredo Silipigni ... I used to be a member of that opera company, and I "discovered" his glorious voice quite by accident. In my opinion, he is as good as the three tenors!
Jaume was acknowledged by Pavarotti, Carreras and Domingo to be the greatest. Watch the Barcelona Games opening ceremony to hear Jaume singing and Carreras and Domingo sound like amateurs !!

Jaume Aragall is a new discovery for me. A great tenor, his voice is like a smooth velvety liqueur and has the same effect. His voice is very strong yet with a wonderful melodic quality. He is a good actor also and comes across as completely real and human in this clip from La Boheme. A beautiful voice indeed. Thanks for uploading this video and thanks to UA-cam for enabling us to hear these wonderful performances.

Che bellezza voce! Sono d'accordo Daniele. Aragall is a wonderful tenor who was overshadowed(unfairly) by his contemporaries such as Carreras,Domingo and Pavarotti. Personally,I have always preferred Aragall's sweet,lyric voice to Carreras and Domingo but not Luciano. Tante grazie for sharing this fine piece with us.

Shutting my eyes for a moment or two, I thought I was listening to a young Pavarotti. A marevlous rendition of this great aria though I thought the high C was not on par with the rest of his performance or that of the other greats.

Pavarotti, Kraus, Domingo...coinciden en señalar a J. Aragall, como la voz más bonita del siglo XX. El problema, es que era muy nervioso. Lo mismo ocurría con Corelli. Según Lauri Volpi, el mejor de la historia fue Miguel Fleta.
Grande anche Fleta. C'è un pezzo particolarmente magnifico che ho ascoltato, ma non ricordo quale :o((
Se lo dicono i due tenori overrated del ventesimo secolo ossia Pavarotti e Domingo poi.. di voci belle ce ne sono state tante e anche migliori a partire da Gigli Di Stefano Corelli Del Monaco Masini Tagliavini Bjorling Tucker Prevedi e via discorrendo.

It's opera you silly sausage. Not Top of the Pops. Opera singers are the real thing - no mikes and certainly no sinking of the lips!
Lip synched. Jaume Aragall had a nice voice and was good overall, but certainly couldn't hold a candle to Pavarotti.
