We used to race against Ernie at the Stockton 99 Speedway stating in the 70s. He was the certainly the most friendly person in the pits and courteous driver on the track. He'd give you a tap to tell you to move out of his way, if he really liked you you'd get a second tap before he spun you into the infield, never the wall.

Ernie is a great guy to this day. Had him on my radio show a few times, before and after the Michigan brain injury. In Southern NY state, which is Bodine country, Ernie was way popular. Especially as this is where KODAK was headquartered. Lots of us here still think fondly if ya Ernie!!!

Ernie said one of THE MOST greatest compliments to LEGENDARY DRIVERS LIKE, Dale Sr., THE KING Richard, and Rusty that WHEN THEY SIT YOU DOWN AND TALK .............................YOU LISTEN!! THAT was being a racer of the day and what makes these legends who they are as well as them seeing all the potential in the world just needed to put a rope on him and throttle him down a notch. MUCH respect to ALL those legends and to ERNIE for being man enough to admit that "yeah it hurt" to have his pride and ego questioned but a lot of talent was on the line and sadly enough it seems like all these HOT SHOT drivers don't know what its like until they get that WALL CHECK and seriously finding out the hard way that you can't drive like its the last lap every race. Michigan crash was his reality check and sadly the beginning of the end of his career as he was NEVER the same after hitting the wall that hard and concrete is NOT FORGIVING. I wonder what could have been had he not had that life altering accident. I always thought of him as a great racer and a potential championship competitor but just wish we could have seen him reach that height. Even though I have all but given up on NASCAR due to all the politics and rules that change like under wear at least there are fond memories of drivers like Ernie and the other greats that helped out when racing was still a blood sweat and tears sport. GONE is the day of the driver that lived paycheck to paycheck to pay for his racecar. GONE are the days when the driver ACTUALLY worked under the hood of their own racecars and knew what it took to make them roll. SADLY the so called NASCAR of TODAY is nothing more than a bunch of rich kids that are, given racecars they know NOT ONE DAMN thing about and have NO RESPECT for the guy's that work on them. It's a bunch of kids that have parents with too much money that say " Here you go son " here's a racecar now go out there and see if you can do something with it. If NASCAR wants to regain ANY fan support or loyal following again then they need to have REAL drivers that spend time working on their own cars not having mommy or daddy do it all for them and thus when get out on the track and something goes wrong they don't just blow it up on purpose like a little crybaby. The other factor is that some of these kids in the cars today are not racers by any stretch of the imagination and someone needs to sit them down like they did Ernie and have a talk about doing something else before they kill themselves or others out there. The Grubb brothers were a prime example of this. NEITHER of them could drive a car, BOTH were scared of going fast and finally good old DADDY GRUBS put them in something way over their heads and ONE got his bell rung and called it a career the other couldn't deal with life and ultimately killed himself. I knew both of them personally as they are from my hometown and Wayne at least realized that this wasn't the sport for him and Kevin tried all be it in vane to be something that he just wasn't able to do. R.I.P. Kevin, and finally to close Ernie HAD what it took to be a great racer but after that head trama in the crash EVERYONE could tell that he wasn't the same man but my hats off to him for getting back into the saddle and proving to the world but mostly to himself that HE WAS a racer bottom line. Thanks for the great memories again Ernie.

Ernie did make a spectacular comeback , but it was the fall 1998 talladega race that ended Ernie Irvan being a competitive racer . Sterling Marlin wrecked Irvan in that race and Irvan was once again cut from his car and airlifted to the hospital . Watch the fall talladega race from 1998 on UA-cam . Irvan came back in 99 but he was never competitive.

I just got my first camera for the Christmas of 1990 (5 almost 6 years old) and my dad showed me the 4 car was sponsored by Kodak, the brand of film in my camera, and he was my driver. That started a love of NASCAR that still lives to this day. If Ernie didn’t suffer the injuries he did at MIS I don’t think Earnhardt would have won 7, nor would Gordon have had the early success he did, this is not taking anything from either because they are two of the best, but Ernie would have been one of the best without that career and life changing injury, would have been one of the best out there for several years. But that is the crazy thing about our sport, what ifs. I will go back to what if Fireball Roberts not lost his life, not only one of the best of that time would have raced on but so would have Ned Jarrett. Maybe Petty wouldn’t have had 7 championships. What if Davey or Alan not lost their lives. Who knows what have turned out differently but it would have. Just realized this is off my daughters account.

90’s NASCAR is my favorite generation of racing.
    Because
    A) I was Bornt in 89, the 90’s were awesome as a kid, Including NASCAR.
    B) The 90’s produced some of the greatest racing/finishes the sport has seen.
& C) I always pulled for Swirvin Irvin, Even as a Jeff Gordon fan.

First driver that I became a fan of. I hated it, when he retired. His house burnt to the ground after he retired, and lost all his belongings, including his trophies from cup wins, and other drivers, as well as Nascar folks re-crafted all his trophies, and presented them back to him, including the Harley-Earl Daytona 500. I last saw him in the Skittles ride back in 1997, I think.

Ernie, you were a great driver. But, in 1994, when you crashed, you weren't leading in the points. It wasn't your championship to lose. You were in 2nd place behind Earnhardt when you had your accident. It was Earnhardt's to lose since he was the reigning champion and he was still on top of the points.

    • @jimijakjones99

Earnhardt was barely ahead on points and both Ernie and Dale were running away from the field . Irvans accident practically gave Earnhardt the championship in 94 . We wouldn't be at war for the last 15 years if our incompetent government didn't let a bunch of scrubs fly planes into buildings but guess what? It happened...Not comparing the two but history is history....as a Gordon fan I could say that if the format didn't change to a playoff system then Gordon would have 7 championships instead of 4 and Johnson would have 3 instead of6 (yes that's a statistical fact) but it doesn't matter...history is history no matter how tragic it works out

I'm sure a lot of people would've said the same thing about Kurt bush 10 years ago...not even that...look at Stewart! When he came up in 99 they said for years he was the best racer in America...guys had two championships which is obviously an incredible feat but let's be honest not even close to what any of us expected him to become...I'll admit my response is biased being that I'm a lifelong Gordon fan and i hate Stewart's guts but like I said history is history and you can't rewrite it you either make history or you become history
