Enduro is a much better game than Pole Position in my opinion. Such a shame Activision didn't focus on the 7800 like they did the 2600; imagine what they could have done for an Enduro sequel on the 7800!
Yeah, like making the tires actually look like they're moving! Hahah! I can see what you mean though...like Pole pos on 2600 vs pole pos II on 7800, the latter was basically as good looking as the arcade version, an Enduro on 7800 could have been amazing!
Enduro was a thrill ride. That Fog was a white knuckle experience, and unless you had a perfect working controller. You had a had time playing this game. I think the mist played games in my collection back then was River Raid Star Master Pitfall Ms PacMan Combat Space Invaders. There were many others such as Pooyan, Frogger etc but that sound of the Engine and Brakes in Enduro is something i won't ever forget.
I'm not much for racing games, but this game I LOVED back when I was little Andy, and I still love it today. A really funny story, back in the day before my friend and I achieved the patch score, my friend's older sister just got her driver's license IRL. She said "let me show you squirts how it's done!" She thought she was going to get the patch on her first try at the game because she had just gotten her driver's license. She made it to day 4 and I kid you not, I am NOT making this up, she had 1 car left to pass to make it to day 5 and the patch and the time ran out. She had the last car she needed to pass right in front of her to her left with a clear lane to pass it on the right and the time expired. She slammed the joystick on the floor, put up her middle finger, and screamed at the TV screen "ONE CAR!" My friend and I were rolling around on the floor laughing so hard we had tears coming out of our eyes. Her older brother and her boyfriend were there at the time and they were laughing too. Now, when one of us sees her, we stick up our middle finger and say "one car." And she'll say something like "yeah, yeah, don't start." She has never lived that down. Comedy GOLD!
I just played this a couple of days' ago on my 2600+ (along with River Raid, Megamania, and Seaquest). It's the best racing game on the Atari. I'm still trying to get past day three as well.
Enduro is certainly an exceptionally put together game with a remarkable risk vs reward system that allows you to find your skill level. In that sense it feels more like your own set your speed dodge em up style game compared to Pole Position's more locked in race like feel. Truthfully they are quite different and both very good with the nod to the absolutely wonderful presentation of Enduro rather elevating it visually
I am loving these quick play-through videos! I loved the game Decathlon back in the day. I think that would be a fun play-through for you, better yet, I think that would be a fun one to have your daughter play ‘live’ with no prep. I remember laughing so much when friends would mess up on that game after all the work they would have to do to run up to the high jump or pole vault… Seeing you, an experienced player, doing it is one thing, a newbie playing would take the video to the next level!!!
I remember asking for Pole Position for Christmas or my birthday and my dad got me Enduro instead because he thought it was a better game. Initially I was disappointed but when I finally got around to playing Pole Position i had to humbly agree with him.
This game has held up really well - it's still playable and fun today. The sense of speed is there, and the changing day/night and weather conditions were really quite innovative for the time.
@@GenXGrownUp I would like to see you showcasing it in the future =) in a similar way to how you did for Enduro, just a 7-ish minute video so people can get a feel for it.
Just played Enduro for the first time on the back of this video and OMG. This is an amazing game that has left me with a big stupid smile on my face. Definitely one that gets you in the zone, I’m back to play some more. Thanks for the video 😊
Hey Jon, Gen X grownup here too…I took pictures and never sent them in too. Pitfall for sure, maybe Star Master too. Dont know why I never followed up as well. Oh well, great times back then. Don’t know if you have done it yet, but i loved Vanguard, Defender, Indiana Jones, and the ET game were some of my 2600 favorites. Also, most Activision and Imagic games, were always top notch too. Talk to you next time. - Lou
Enduro is either my favorite game on the VCS or tied with Haunted House. I just absolutely love this game and you captured the reasons why perfectly. It's almost a zen/relaxation style game with the cruise control and the onset of evening and night as you race. The day night cycle mixed with the fog and the snow is just enchanting. I'd love to see you take a crack at " beating the game " on a live stream. Absolutely fantastic video! Thanks for giving Enduro it's due!
I was a huge fan of Sega Turbo back in the day which was clearly one of the inspirations for Enduro. Still a great game for the 2600 and a firm all time favourite. Great video Jon! Keep up the awesome work!
A new version of Turbo was recently released for the 2600. The cartridge is expensive at $60. but the ROM can be downloaded for $15. You may want to check it out. ua-cam.com/video/rM5_R4czckA/v-deo.html
Enduro is still fun today as it always has been, I like that you described it as a zen game, I would definitely agree with that. Really enjoyed these last couple of Activision game reviews btw 👍😎🕹
My vote for another installment of this series is Mountain King. I discovered this one late in my 2600 phase back in the day and was amazed at the depth of gameplay that they got out of this (I think this may have been a 12K cart). Make sure you read the instructions if you're not too familiar with it. It's biggest drawback was the difficulty in jumping (requiring a diagonal push on the joystick, which required some practice), but if you play it with the sticks on the new Game Station Pro, it makes this dramatically easier--which is kind of why I'm bringing up this title for consideration as these sticks have breathed some new life into it for me.
One of my favourite games ever. Still play it now. I remember seeing turbo on the colecovision back then and wishing I had i could have had it but I only had a 2600. I got this game for Christmas when it was released hoping it would be as good as turbo. Now I’ve played turbo, Enduro was far superior and better in every aspect from the control and changing weather and time of day.
I think my best performance so far is day 13. At some point, with all those cars, it becomes hypnotic. What an amazing game, and I love the sound effects too
My family was a little late to the 2600 party coming just as the crash was happening in late 1983. Enduro was a part of our initial set of games and we played it all the time. I think possibly my mom got to Day 4 but no further. I’ve seen play throughs on YT of people making it to Day 5 and beyond. Once you get that far the car symbol in your status bar is replaced with a trophy.
I like Enduro. I was able to make it to day 4, but haven't reached day 5 yet because just like the name implies, it takes endurance. I've read about how there was a contest where you can film yourself on day 5 and send it in to Activision to win a car and trip. I played an arcade game called "Driving Force" which was based on Enduro and has the same transition from day to night.
The patch is how I learned about flash cameras and TVs. I had done well enough on Spider Fighter, took a picture and when I got it developed a week later it was just a blank screen with a giant flash on it. So crushed.
I qualified for the Activision Skiing patch, but like you, I never sent in the photo. Regrets, but I'm sure I'd have lost it by now in any case. I'm not great at keeping things like that.
If there was a GOAT level tier for 2600 games, this would be one of them. So superior over the Pole Position port on the 2600, as the gameplay is always changing. I got my first Activision patch with Enduro, as I made it to Day 8!
I think I made it to day 10 once but I don't remember what happens. Basically Turbo in a way. (3 lanes of fixed cars, changing weather/scenes) yet Pole Position for the track fluidity with the changing curves. (Not locked down like turbo going scene to scene). Yep, just cruise control enough to pass the required cars.
I agree that this is the best racing game on the 2600. Pole Position was a fine port, but Enduro was more like a sim. Loved Robot Tank as well. Just realized they could have added mud to Enduro as it was in Robot Tank. Atari would have been a shadow of what it was without Activision and Imagic.

This is one of those games that I always think gets the benefit of Activision bias. It is not bad, but I was never enamored with it like many are. Still a fun video, though, keep them coming. How about Omega Race?
An absolute classic, still playable today.
This was my favorite Atari racing game in the 80s! That sound it made when you didn’t pass enough cars in time was a total gut punch sound! 😂

Greetings from Iowa 💀💀💀
Enduro is my most favorite 2600 racing game! This is the first patch I ever earned for an Activision game!
Keep these coming Jon! Do all the Activision games please. It will make an amazing playlist!
Thanks for the suggestion! Not every Activision game is a banger, though, so I wonder if I skip the duds or just make fun of 'em?! 😂

Ms PacMan

Space Invaders.

I thought Jr. Pacman out-did Ms. Pacman. Both good games though.
@pinebarrenpatriot8289 yes it was better in many ways.
I got to play Jr Pacman but I didn't own it back in the day.
Loved the Great American Cross Country Road Race on Atari 800 as well!
As a kid I thought you drove a bulldozer, but when I started getting back into Atari as an adult, I figured out that the car has a spoiler.
As a flat, single-color sprite, I can see that!
I thought the other cars in Pole Position were fences / gates on the track. 😂
Still love Enduro. A few other most played as a kid were Vangard, Defender, Chopper Command, and Pheonix.
Great list !
