I try not to read comments and like to be surprised. Alex you had me dying when you were lying down on the passenger seat back. I do like that fold flat passenger seat.
Honestly comparing to the competition this vehicle makes a really compelling argument since it is nicer than most of the mainstream competitors in the the CUV lineup but it definitely gives the sedans that remain a run for their money. If you need something bigger look elsewhere but if you needs a comfortable car with good fuel economy this is for you. It even has good utility for its size and price until at least the Santa Cruz and Maverick come out.
I really believe that Buick has figured out the small-ute class. Since the Encore debuted, it has had a devout following. Unlike what Cadillac has done with the XT4, they're not trying to deliver the GX as a true alternative to a BMX X1 or Benz GLA. It is simply a polished everyday small CUV that does what buyers ask. I see a lot of seniors driving Encores, and I can see why. They've gone from Town Cars and Fleetwoods to Encores and others because, outside of sheer size and roominess, they offer refinement and hushed driving dynamics that they require. I will be curious to see how the 3cyl holds up over time though. It brings back Geo Metro memories for me.😬
@@stacynewton34 no there is not. You can clearly see no vents on the center console and multiple car reviewers including redline review even say it has no rear seat vents.
Love my 2019 Encore so much that I'm going for the 2020 GX for a second car. The extra inches and larger console and promise of 35+ highway mileage are important.
We have an Encore 2019 too, no center arm rest/container and I really miss one. I'm looking at GX for a 2nd vehicle to add. Might go bigger though, thinking Terrain or a Tucson. They both seem much bigger and roomier. This is only 3 inches longer than reg Encore but inside it seems much wider but width wise it's only 1" wider than Encore, go figure.
@@LGMinnesota So ... I bought 2 GXs , 1-1.2L and 1-1.3L engines, having traded my Encore up to the GX for about $5K. Highly recommend doing this because both versions get 30+ mpg, the technology offered makes them more drivable and safer, and the small extra width is noticeable and the ride more solid. Both 3 cyl. engines surprised me with power to push you into the seat and are selling for about the same $$ as the 2020 Encore. The armrest and cup holders are much more comfortable and I recommend the power lift gate too. Yes, it's only 1 inch wider, but the cabin design does a lot with that inch! If you go to a bigger car, prepare to get 25 -27 mpg. The "larger" engine will yield 2-3 mpg. more, but regardless I get 32-35 mph. on the highway with the 1.2L version and have left the 28 mpg. driving experience for good. I live in a rural area, so if you live in a major traffic area, the city driving will cost you more gas. The "auto-stop" helps this a lot and recently driving the highway without the A/C for brief periods sent the avg. mpg. well into the 40's for the trip - it's starting to get colder now. These cars a amazing .... good luck.
$36,000! That’s what I paid for my CX-5 Signature. A much better car, both in power and features. I live in a retirement community and the little old ladies do love the Encore!
Mazda CX30 cargo area is small compared to Encore GX due to the shape of the CX30. I do agree that a Mazda CX-5 at 36k is a better choice than GX, bigger and larger engine. However, according to Truecar.com, the average transaction price of the GX after dealer discounts and GM rebates is closer to $21k. At 21k, GX is certainly the better choice than CX5.
Those and the Mazda CX-30 do seem like more logical comparisons than any of the true luxury brands, with the posdible exception of the pathetic Lexus UX, which is nothing more than an uglified Corolla hatchback. Out of the bunch I have a feeling I'd probably end up with the Seltos.
A loaded out Soul Turbo gets to 60 in 6.5 seconds and is pretty nice inside compared to this thing. You can get one of those for under 30K all day. The list of better cars than this is a mile long.
Crosstrek is the number 1 best selling Subcompact CUV in the segment and you didn’t even mention about it? In terms of sales, Kona isn’t high up, HRV gets more sales than Kona, seltos and CX30 are fairly new so unsure about them in terms of sales.
Black Whirlwind Subaru definitely has some compelling smaller cars as well. I am allergic to CVT transmissions so that rules out most of the Subaru models.
I just can’t see buying this at $33K over a CR-V Touring. Fuel economy on the Buick is abysmal for this cute ute. GM continues to trail the competition for many reasons. Appreciate the review Alex
hiroshima thompson I agree, but some think of Hyundai as second rate in the U.S. Buick appeals to a small segment of Americans, and not much more. They’re overpriced and just fancy Chevys. The biggest downside of this vehicle, including the Traxx, is poor fuel economy for a small vehicle. Tucson is nice.
I prefer the plastic panel HUD to the windshield display HUD mostly because of cost. Getting a HUD compatible windshield is expensive if you live in an area where gravel trucks throw rocks and break windshields on a regular basis.
I traded my 2018 audi q3 for this vehicle. Granted audi made more hp but also I have encountered alot of mechanical problems such as water pump, transmission, over heating, and maintenance are just too expensive 😅. This encore is yet still luxury and very comfortable. I got the essence trim with power lift gate and moon roof. So far I'm really enjoying this vehicle. Lol 😆 some of my family and friends thought I got a bmw.. no its a buick... I felt like being a buick commercial. Nice job buick.
What is the deal with so many vehicles using combination LED and incandescent lights? How much more money could we talking about to (in this case) use an LED turn signal up front? I just don't understand. Either make it all-LED or don't bother.
I'm Not Using My Real Name Mazda is all about aesthetics, but they save money in other places. Don’t for one second think that you’re getting more value with Mazda. Their electronics are terrible and their seat covers, though look great new, wear out in under 3 years.
Im surprised at the fuel economy being 31 mpg. My 1.4 liter Suzuki turbo Vitara gets combined 40mpg US gallons. But then again my Vitara only weighs 1240 kg.
If it's an older model it would have been rated using a different EPA formula than is used now. Current vehicles often have unrealistically low ratings. Alex noted that he got over 40mpg in steady 70 mph highway cruising.
Often you get What you pay for it. the encore interior much better than a lot of the competitor. the encore infotainment ctr much much better than most of them out there.👍😜
Nice summary. A couple interesting points. The 2021 Trailblazer has wireless Android Auto and Apple Car play which isn’t available at all on the more upscale 2020 Buick twin. I assume GM will fix that with the 2021 Encore GX? You also repeatedly listed the CVT as a negative yet you only have to get the AWD version to a get a great 9 speed automatic that’s at least as good as what the Volvo and Germans offer and far nicer than the AWD Toyota, Nissan, and the CVT and clunky much hated dual clutch in the Hyundai/Kia competition. It’s also worth noting you can get adaptive cruise in the midline trims of both this and the Trailblazer while it requires the top trim of much of the competition. You can also get a 360 degree camera system which much of the competition doesn’t have at any price. The XC40, in particular, gets obscenely expensive if those two options are must have items. Hyundai/Kia only have adaptive cruise on the top trims with the nasty dual clutch and no 360 vision at all. Finally, GM has $3250 cash back on the 2020 Encore GX right now which makes it a better deal than a similarly equipped 2021 Trailblazer and you get the much nicer interior, better sound insulation, a more upscale brand, etc. but no wireless phone connectivity.
I have a 2018 encore, and I love it. However, I do wish I had a power liftgate, and I don't like the way the back seats fold in my car. I do however have the fold flat passenger seat...very handy! I would also quickly replace all those incandescent bulbs with LEDs!
I personally am not looking to buy this year, possibly not next year, but it's comin' . . . and, besides, I love watching car videos! - At present am looking towards a compact/sub-compact Crossover, AWD, smaller footprint and higher mileage than my old Toyota . . . interior space is important, but comfort, ease of use, reliability and styling are more important to me. - Presently the Seltos is my top choice and I'm looking forward to seeing the Kona N-line. The Encore GX, however, has quickly climbed my list . . . exterior styling is exquisite and the interior looks great and seems user-friendly. More research to come . . . p.s.: it's funny you mention the harmonics of the old 3.8 Buicks, as I had a Skyhawk and a Grand National back-to-back in the 80's . . . loved those cars.
It's very interesting to see what the next Vauxhall (Opel for everywhere else in Europe but I'm from the UK so Vauxhall for me) Mokka would've been like if PSA didn't buy them.
D Tay Interesting. Why? The Seltos has more modern features, more interior space and more power, without resorting to a CVT. It’s also cheaper and has a better warranty and resale value.
@@afcgeo882 Not easy to compare, but the Buick Encore GX Essence with AWD is about the same price at the Seltos SX with sunroof. Check out Consumer Reports. They put the Seltos below the Kona. The Seltos is more expensive than the Kona with the 1.6L. I also don't like the Seltos DCT / 1.6L combo -- too much hesitation. Better warranty yes, but to early to say about resale...
@@afcgeo882 I wouldn't take the less power, one less cylinder, slower acceleration, and higher price of the Encore GX over a Seltos SX. A CX-30 is also a better value.
Overall I love your reviews and think they are the most detailed available. Question on the grades to give as they don’t always seem to match up to the numbers to report. For example, you give this vehicle an A+ for quietness with 71 dB but give the Mazda a B+ for the same 71 dB. Would love at some point a list of quietest vehicles from you.
I have both the Honda HR-V Sport AWD and this Encore GX AWD and I like the handling of the Honda HR-V around corner or winding road better. The front suspension of this is a bit soft and floating vs. the HR-V. The Encore transmission is lacking too because some it seems like its in a tall gear and the motor lacking power as if you accidently shift into taller gear of a manual and it did not have enough power/speed on low speed. Lastly, the C-pillar so think and obstruction as you turns left or right. Buick should have made it thinner
Pity they shortened it from the Chevy Trailblazer. I'd otherwise regard it as pretty much perfect. As it is, at least for my uses, do you want the more spartan interior and limited noise insulation of the Chevy or a slightly-too-small vehicle in the Buick?
The white pearl tri-coat paint is beautiful, but delamination is a problem with Buick paints. Needs a turbocharged 1.8L 4 cylinder and more sound deadening. Lots of tire roar at highway speeds and thrashy 3-cylinder engine noise under load. Not as quiet as buyers expect for a Buick. Well done as always, Alex! Very thorough.
Paint issues are prevalent in other brands, look at mazda, talk to mazda owners, in 1 year paint is peeling on CX5s. Reason is environmental standards are forcing makers to use different paint then in previous years where it was better.
I agree on sound as the GX has to much noise on acceleration. Our regular Encore is super quiet but then it's got the 4 cylinder. CVT ugh, 3 cylinder ugh.
Currently have a 2016 chevy cruze lt. Looking to either get this gx or something with more power like a xt4. I like the control layout of cruze but want awd crossover without getting something too big for my needs.
GM did a decent job with the 3 cylinder, but it is not very smooth - it is actually very rough in comparison to the balanced Ecotec 4 cylinder engine. It is strong enough and you get great gas mileage, but smoothness is not part of its DNA which Alex briefly mentions, especially at idle. Test drove this - still don't like 3 cylinder engines. Maybe if gas prices skyrocket it will be popular to build and sell these engines bur right now, not so much. Also, the heads up projector has a small screen - which you have to keep clean unlike the Buick lineup which don't have the screen.Otherwise this SUV seems well executed as it even as Alexa available. I own an Envision which is a foot bigger, do like that car.
Alex, would be nice if you could sometimes include Mitsubishi Eclipse Cross in your reviews to compare to other similar compact competitors like this one, thanks!
They are extremely similar in size and hp. Both offer awd and fwd. I test drove a eclipse cross to the gmc dealership I compared the two side by side. In the end I got the buick encore gx essence fwd. Bc it came down to mpg, looks, and more importantly maritals the eclipse cross had more cheaper plastics encore had more upscale plastics.
Don't think I'd consider this to be honest. I'd rather pay more for more premium car or go with a larger mainstream SUV if it was my pick. Even something like the new Bronco Sport would be a better pick IMO
It's not the first time an automaker has overlapped introduction of the new version with production of the old. It often has to do with the timing and cost of switching plants over to the new model.
Mark Miller that makes sense. Encores make them a lot of money and if they overlap they can make more with a new model until the encore’s sales start to slow down.
This was great. It sealed the deal for me. I'm in Canada, so my next challenge is to figure out how much haggle can be done. The price is decent but I feel like I'm doing it wrong if I don't haggle a bit. Given its popularity though, I may not have much I could try to do, right?
Regular Encore owners already had several issues with the turbo failing because the engine is constantly strained. Now this one has an even smaller turbo engine? Good luck with longevity
Can you post a link to the complaints? I haven't read that. Honda has had problems with their 1.5 turbo and and my Crosstrek engine was rebuilt under recall for bad valve springs.
@@Argedis Thanks for sharing, but there were actually very few complaints compared to the number sold. Certainly no worse than the complaints for RAV4s and CR-Vs, etc.
I'm impressed and it has been added to my short list. I am not really comfortable with any compact CUVs and the Sub-compact CUVs are just too small. - Honestly, I wouldn't be in the CUV segment if it wasn't for a compressed disk and bad left hip/leg. I am a sports car guy, or at least a sports sedan with good HP/Torque and great cornering ability. So, what I'd like is a relatively quick SUV with competent handling. Reasonably priced CUV's are not known to have a well rounded feel, so I have to compromise. - With money as no object, an Acura RDX with SH-AWD would be my first choice; it's only minuses as I see it are the stupid trany controls and the borderline screen interface. - The Seltos is on my list, but there are quirks with that vehicle that I could not be sure about until I get one onto the road. - The Buick, with deal markdowns, could come in near the top Seltos and get me the AWD. IMO, I find it to be the most all-around attractive CUV in the compact and sub-compact range, and that includes the luxury units. The 1.3 is the only choice for me, although I'd prefer the AWD; I'd want to drive a CVT and a 9A before making a decision. The reasonable handling is attractive to me, entry height looks perfect and the Buick ride would prolly be good for the back. Thanx for the complete video . . . good information, as usual.
I just don't get Buick in America, supposedly nicer than a Chevy but not quite a Cadillac, ok?? 🤔🙄 Whatever at least make some things standard - sunroof, rear air vents, etc. Otherwise I may as well option out a Chevy! (I still think they should have kept Pontiac and axed Buick)
@@jasonprince3093 in the US the South Korean made Encore is the best selling Buick at close to 100,000 units annually. The China made Envision only sells in the 30's here.
I have heard in customer reviews that the battery keeps dying only after 18 months of ownership. I also heard this happened to many people owning the Buick Cascada. I really like the GX would buy one but the battery trouble scares me.
I never understand auto makers. LED headlights and fog lights yet the turn signal is incandescent. Does it really cost that much more to add in an LED turn signal?
I'd swear that some old guys in focus groups implore the OEMs to leave some incandescent lamps because they want something to change every so often, but the likely reality is that the engineers don't get to add them because of cost.
Do people cross shop this new GX with a MINI Countryman? They seem to be really similar (especially the 3 cylinder Countryman) in size, price, and feature set.
I think a lot of us forget about Mini because they've been quiet of late (and their sales figures are poor). The Countryman would be a very logical semi-premium comparison to this.
This offers more features than the countryman. It just needs a better engine for the highway, ventilated seats, and rear air vents. A hybrid option would be nice. Still considering it.
Up to $34,000 for a 3 cylinder engine? A non-starter. GM cut out a cylinder, cheapened out on a radar adaptive cruise control system and kept the savings in their pockets. I laugh every time Alex tries to compare this to a BMW X1. The X1 is both larger and more powerful. This is competive to a Kia Seltos and the Seltos has more power and that missing cylinder for a better price. A Madza CX-30 is also a better choice. This not an alternative to the RAV4, Tiguan, or whatever Alex suggests. This is a more expensive version of the Trailblazer and a pricey competitor to the HRV, Seltos, Kona, Kicks, Ecosport, CH-R, and Renegade. Nobody is cross shopping this with the XC-40 or BMW X1 except those who don't know the difference.
The Encore GX Essence is $7,000-8,000 off or low $20's. No European is going to be priced that low and this undercuts the RAV4 on price before discounting while offering 99% of the capacity.
@hiroshima thompson When Subaru, Mazds, H/K do not have a substantial luxury brand they have to offer more than the economy brands they also represent. Genesis is here but not really. By the time they get a full SUV lineup will be mostly switched to BEV.

I try not to read comments and like to be surprised. Alex you had me dying when you were lying down on the passenger seat back. I do like that fold flat passenger seat.
Love to see a comparison of this and the blazer and how their AWD works.
Nice video! Found many things that we had no idea the car had, so thank you for the thorough review!
Just picked up a 2022. Love it.
The Buick is a great urban vehicle and extremely price competitive (not the MSRP) in its market segment.
Well done as always. Horizontal Alex is impressive too! 😊
Err...uhh...
It brings back Geo Metro memories for me.😬
Seniors also appreciate that they're exactly the right height to easily get in and out of.
@@markmiller3279 exactly! Chair-height accessibility is a big deal for them. Similarly, that's why minivans are popular with seniors too.
This is a very thorough review, you really covered all bases and the photography is excellent, too. 👍
A "luxury" small suv without rear seat vents. A car targeted for small families.
I know right. It’s just dumb!
Transporting dogs in the back, having those air vents shooting cold air makes a huge difference. I won't get a car that doesn't have them.
Middle aged woman is the tarket.
They do.smh
@@stacynewton34 no there is not. You can clearly see no vents on the center console and multiple car reviewers including redline review even say it has no rear seat vents.
I miss the days when Buicks were actually built in North America. Enclave is it for locally built
No one but a fool pays MSRP for these. They are heavily discounted -- as much as $11k off sticker, so way cheaper than your Mazda is real pricing.
@@brocklanders6969 25k is more in line with a Mazda CX-30 then and that one is a much better choice anyway.
@@adam145 Comparably equipped, the CX-30 is much more expensive.
Your best video yet Alex. Thank you. Very helpful.
Three cylinders? Ok. Here's a new take, "There's plenty of replacement for small displacement." I can find a better car, so I'll buy it.
If they have 2 cylinders husband carry one and wife carry one put under the hood when go out 😂
If the the Kia Seltos, Mazda CX30, or Hyundai Kona Limited, didn't exist, this would definitely be the best in class
@@Dryloch That's right the Soul is better too
Crosstrek is the number 1 best selling Subcompact CUV in the segment and you didn’t even mention about it? In terms of sales, Kona isn’t high up, HRV gets more sales than Kona, seltos and CX30 are fairly new so unsure about them in terms of sales.
Black Whirlwind Subaru definitely has some compelling smaller cars as well. I am allergic to CVT transmissions so that rules out most of the Subaru models.
I just can’t see buying this at $33K over a CR-V Touring. Fuel economy on the Buick is abysmal for this cute ute. GM continues to trail the competition for many reasons. Appreciate the review Alex
Massive discounts are available. It is priced closer to an HR-V.
hiroshima thompson I agree, but some think of Hyundai as second rate in the U.S.
Had to google what an XT4 was during the head and legroom comparison. 😬 Knew all the rest...
Power hatch, I like that
I traded my 2018 audi q3 for this vehicle.
So true man... Thanks for speaking out all our thoughts.
Enough to make the decision to do so, clearly. Why comment out of ignorance?
Exactly. Especially on a "luxury" car. Mazda can do full LED lights on every model even though they aren't a luxury brand.
I'm Not Using My Real Name Mazda is all about aesthetics, but they save money in other places. Don’t for one second think that you’re getting more value with Mazda. Their electronics are terrible and their seat covers, though look great new, wear out in under 3 years.
@@afcgeo882 He asked a question. That's exactly what you do when you don't know something. You ask a question. No need to be an asshole.
In Consumer Reports testing, the select trim stopped in 126 feet, and Consumer Reports isn't known for making manufacturers look good.
lol and Consumer Reports seems to really dislike American manufacturers like Buick too.
@@markmiller3279 my car is a 2017 and I get 50 miles per gallon on the open road , and even more on a motorway at a steady speed
@Jonathan 4cyl 1373cc turbo, 140HP
I enjoyed listening! You’re super knowledgeable. Awesome
The GX is a great car and affordable luxury. Actually, the CVT has plenty of pep.
The 2021 GXs did receive wireless Apple Carplay/Android Auto as standard equipment.
Excellent, next-level review
It's very interesting to see what the next Vauxhall (Opel for everywhere else in Europe but I'm from the UK so Vauxhall for me) Mokka would've been like if PSA didn't buy them.
I think it's an excellent choice in the segment.
Would you get this over a Seltos?
@@afcgeo882 tough call, but I probably would
D Tay Interesting.
@@afcgeo882
I wouldn't take the less power, one less cylinder, slower acceleration, and higher price of the Encore GX over a Seltos SX.
Wish this had the same dimensions as the Trailblazer. Or the trailblazer had all the options the GX has.
Just got a 2020 encore gx st.... with the 1.2 and cvt. No complaints so far. And after getting it for 18k...i feel like I stole it
This is my only SUV I will buy it used Alex.
I would get a regular encore if it had a true center console. But this thing will do
Pity they shortened it from the Chevy Trailblazer. I'd otherwise regard it as pretty much perfect. As it is, at least for my uses, do you want the more spartan interior and limited noise insulation of the Chevy or a slightly-too-small vehicle in the Buick?
I would buy this Buick.
19:17 mark - Did he say highway cruising wold get you 40 mpg? (!)
I know right? That's crazy. Can that be right?
Great review, I think I'm sold
I own an Envision which is a foot bigger, do like that car.
hidden exhaust...ugh. We sat in one of these at the last car show I went too, it was a little tight.
Didn’t hear it mentioned, does it offer ventilated seats?
Don't think I'd consider this to be honest. I'd rather pay more for more premium car or go with a larger mainstream SUV if it was my pick. Even something like the new Bronco Sport would be a better pick IMO
Don’t go with a Ford. If you ever have problems with it, the company will pretty much tell you to f*** off.
I don’t know why Buick didn’t just make this the next gen encore.
I agree.Would have made more sense.
If there is a "wireless charging mat", why are you plugging your phone in at 11:43 TS?
This was great. It sealed the deal for me. I'm in Canada, so my next challenge is to figure out how much haggle can be done. The price is decent but I feel like I'm doing it wrong if I don't haggle a bit. Given its popularity though, I may not have much I could try to do, right?
Did you haggle alittle ? Did you get the vehicle?
GREAT REVIEW
would GM's 2.0T not fit in this?
Regular Encore owners already had several issues with the turbo failing because the engine is constantly strained. Now this one has an even smaller turbo engine? Good luck with longevity
Can you post a link to the complaints? I haven't read that. Honda has had problems with their 1.5 turbo and and my Crosstrek engine was rebuilt under recall for bad valve springs.
@@brocklanders6969 just go to carcomplaints.com and you can read the actual horror stories from owners. This is across several model years too
@@Argedis Thanks for sharing, but there were actually very few complaints compared to the number sold. Certainly no worse than the complaints for RAV4s and CR-Vs, etc.
@@Argedis no we did not on our 2013 Encore. The in laws 2015 is fine at 40K miles and the aunt's 2017 Encore is doing just fine. All without problems.
GM kept Buick because it is a popular Brand in China. From what I heard most Buicks are made in China.
@@jasonprince3093 yea I know their reasoning I just disagree 😂 because clearly I know it all, right? Lol 🤷🏾♂️
@@juelzm149 yep. I also agree with you that they should have kept Pontiac also and made it into a performance brand.
@@jasonprince3093 in the US the South Korean made Encore is the best selling Buick at close to 100,000 units annually. The China made Envision only sells in the 30's here.
Buick Encore GX has a Cadillac XT4 problem.
I have heard in customer reviews that the battery keeps dying only after 18 months of ownership. I also heard this happened to many people owning the Buick Cascada. I really like the GX would buy one but the battery trouble scares me.
I have a 2017 Buick Encore that I bought brand-new and my battery lasted (4) years.
Great video!
Will the new Envision have the same fold-flat front passenger seat?
I see an EV version coming except there's no automated driving aid's, also looks like they pulled from the Bolts part's bin
I bought A GX And I'm not seeing a HUD button Where can I find it on my Vehicle and mine is a 2021
Doing this to Buick , theyre killing the brand.
$34k only if you are dumbest consumer in America. Actually, the Seltos is more expensive with the 1.6L. Buick discounts heavily.
By the time they get a full SUV lineup will be mostly switched to BEV.
hey Alex. how does it compare with mini countryman All4?
i UNDERSTAND THE ENCORE GX HAS ELECTRIC BRAKES. IS THAT TRUE AND HOW DOES THAT AFFECT STOPPING DISTANCE?
you need some of that MKBHD Buick money!
