  • Experience fantastic sunrise and night views of Gurney Bay Penang at the famous Penang Gurney Drive area: Gurney Bay (槟城最新景点新关仔湾 开放) Phase 1 was opened on 4th Feb 2024 to the public.
It is a stunning transformation from the former Gurney Drive where it was just a plain seaside. I wasn't aware of the opening but as I was driving along Gurney Drive, I thought I saw a lot of cars parked on the inside road next to the main road.
Being the curious person, I decided to go in and have a look and I was very impressed - especially when compared to the previous Gurney Drive that I knew.
Most people know Gurney Drive to be a popular seafront promenade located within George Town, Penang, Malaysia.
However many do not know that it is George Town's second Central Business District (CBD) due to the massive development of skyscrapers and shopping malls.
By the way, on the morning on the 4th Feb 2024, amongst the first to check out the Gurney Bay was none other than the Yang di-Pertua Negeri of Penang, Tun Ahmad Fuzi Abdul Razak, who was accompanied by Chief Minister Chow Kon Yeow and other senior state officials.
“Phase One is now open to the public. Work under phase two is currently at 40% and is expected to be completed by mid-2025,” Chow said after the walkabout - as was reported in the news.
The ground-breaking ceremony for the RM247.8mil project was held on May 14, 2022.
Mooted in 2016, the project was first tagged Gurney Wharf before being renamed Gurney Bay to better reflect its location and concept.
The previous Gurney Drive was also famous for the street cuisine with the hawker stalls alongside the road and has been listed as one of the 25 best streets worldwide by The Traveller, Australia’s travel magazine.
Later the hawkers were relocated to the seafront's hawker centre situated at the start of the Gurney Drive near Tanjung Tokong for a more organised setting.
As of 2016, the shoreline off Gurney Drive is being reclaimed for the purpose of creating a public recreational park - Gurney Wharf.
This is a Penang State Project to reclaim 760 acres for the Seri Tanjung Pinang Phase 2 with a total of 131 acres off the Gurney Drive foreshore by the Penang State Government at its own cost
Gurney Wharf concept masterplan contains four distinct character areas
    1. Seaside Retail F&B
    2. Water Gardens
    3. Beach
    4. Coastal Grove
The Seaside Retail F&B will have water-fronting public promenade, seafront dining facilities including the island’s famed hawker fare and a pier walk while the Water Gardens area will have lush gardens, ponds and wetlands water gardens with innovative storm water filtration systems. As of 4th Feb 2024, only some of these facilities were ready.
The beach area with a direct access to the waterfront will include a public beach as well as a public promenade. Currently the Coastal Grove has a skate park for the youth - however you will notice in the video that not only youths are enjoying the the facilities.
Adults are also enjoying the facilities there. In fact, every one is. So if you are a visitor to Penang, this is one place that should be in your itinerary. I foresee that Gurney Bay Penang will even be nicer when the trees and plants are fully grown.
I would also like to appeal to visitors to keep the place clean and throw rubbish into the many rubbish bins that are placed all over the place.

There is a flaw in the playground planning. The skateboarding is given so much space in relation to it popularity in Malaysia. It almost occupies 40% of the playground area. The are inadequate of playground apparatus for the volume children who turned up. Kuala Lumpur children playground has more options for children than Gurney Bay. The size of the public toilet is pathetic, so insignificant comparison to the size of human traffic. Can’t imagine how it is going to cope if there is an organised event takes place. If the authority were to enforce no walking on grass, the hard surface area will be congested with visitors who want stroll and relax.

      Good feedback. Yes... I agree.
The toilets will definitely not be able to cope if there are many people needing to use it - esp with events on. On the other hand, it will not look good if it's too big. So they will have to think of a suitable design. They will also need to keep the toilets clean.
The other challenge is how to keep the place free of rubbish esp plastic bottles.
Hopefully visitors will throw their rubbish into the bins and not leave them all over the place like they often do esp at the beaches.

I have seen a few people fishing using fishing rods but I am not sure if it is legally allowed or not. However, I have not seen a No Fishing sign anywhere.

Can take my dog to walk there?

I have seen many people taking their dogs for a walk there and i have not seen a "No dogs/pet allowed" sign. If you take your dog for a walk, it would be good if you dispose of the dog's poo properly (should there be poo) so as to keep the place clean. Pls try to encourage everyone to keep the place as clean as possible.

Unfortunately we are still living in a world of corruption. To be realistic, it will be a long journey but if ALL of us have the same vision and common goal of building a truly great Malaysia, then we can see better things ahead.
Right now, the minimum we can do for Gurney Bay is to encourage visitors not to throw rubbish everywhere - if you have been to our beautiful beaches, you will know what I mean. People like to go for picnic on nice beaches but they just leave their rubbish behind!!!😒
If the same people follow that bad habit, then Gurney Bay may even turn out to be a big rubbish dump!😣
