Dominance Relations
The dominance relationship between alleles refers to the phenomenon where one allele (the dominant allele) has a greater effect on the phenotype than the other allele (the recessive allele). This means that:
The dominant allele will always be expressed if an individual has one or two copies of it (homozygous or heterozygous).
The recessive allele will only be expressed if an individual has two copies of it (homozygous recessive).
Here's an explanation of incomplete dominance, codominance, and multiple alleles:
*Incomplete Dominance*:
Occurs when one allele does not completely dominate the other allele
The effect of the two alleles is blended or intermediate
The phenotype is a combination of the two alleles
Example: Red flowers (R) and white flowers (r) combine to produce pink flowers (Rr)
*Codominance*:
Occurs when both alleles have an equal effect on the phenotype
Neither allele is recessive or dominant
Both alleles are expressed equally
Example: AB blood type, where A and B alleles are codominant and both are expressed
*Multiple Alleles*:
Occurs when there are more than two alleles for a particular gene
Each allele can have a different effect on the phenotype
Can result in a wider range of phenotypes
Example: ABO blood type, where there are three alleles (A, B, and O) that determine the blood type
