To me, the release of said album ("Big Band"; 1997) was one of those precious few momentous occasions, when a new, commercially available product, a CD in this case, really struck a nerve. It doesn't matter that it's already 22 years ago. This video of yours is like Proust's Madeleines, it instantly takes me back to the thrill of hearing Joe's big band sound for the first time. It is an album that anyone who loves the big bands ought to have in his collection. You'll hear great, timeless music. Would have been preferable if his big band had got a break 25 years earlier, but let's focus on the music and the joy that Joe Henderson's perseverance came to fruition at all, and just in time, for he went too early. Thank you, Bret, for these invaluable interviews. Joe & Sco, two people who made a difference. No, Joe & Sco & The JVG, three people who _are_ making a difference.
These two gentlemen truly know the art of conversation. It gives an enormous joy to witness the respectful silence of the listener and the wisdom of someone who has something important to say.
Imagine if someone found old footage of bird and didn't post it due to it not reaching today's "technological" standards. Thank you for making the better decision! Timeless advice for us youngins!
Great interview! I love their comments on the current state of music and education: the importance of transcribing and making your own lead sheets, like Clark Terry says “Imitate, Assimilate, Innovate”

Great album!!!
Thank you for posting this Bret. Reassuring, in a way, to hear these guys wrestling with the same thought I’ve been wrestling with for a long time.

Sadly, it seems as if the art of conversation is on the decline, especially face to face.

Too bad so many folks don't get to the "Innovate" part of the equation!!! Lots of imitators crowding the field today but where are all the innovators?
Such a great amount of info right there.
This is priceless. Love it when the phone rings and John answers it for Joe.
super video !!!
Coincidentally, this is the same video quality as my 6th birthday video...haha
"So, why don't they do that shit to classical music, man?"
