Some of the Cessna 195’s had “breakaway” landing gear. If there was a heavy crosswind during landing, and the aircraft was crabbing in, the wheels could rotate slightly left or right to allow the plane to land at an angle. The brake assemblies had a clutch system that allowed the wheels to snap free or angle under a set amount of load. We rebuilt these brake systems at Goodyear Wheel and Brake div. in Akron Ohio.
Sounds nice always. As I remember: "Pull through" 8 blades-7 cylinder engine one for the team. mags -master off of course. In the cabin ya go. Master on, 1-4 primes, Mixture rich. Prop fine -pitch all in. "Clear and heads up visual" Throttle just a bit. Starter engage for 3 blades for momentum and then ignition to battery...when she fires ...switch to both. That'd be mag and battery. Set rpm .. Check oil pressure glance and then lean hard for just a tad to clean'r up and right back to ground idle lean setting. Because.... Now your in there for a bit til that oil tank gets some of that warmth in there. Feel the bottom of the tank with your hand that she's gett'n there. 120 temp feels good and warm. Oil temp in the yellow- green area and your ready to do your mag-battery check and prop cycles. What did I forget..? Fuel stays on
I got to ride in one of these with the pilot owner after it had come out from an annual inspection. He flew a short flight to at a fairly low altitude. It was quite thrilling after numerous rides in Cessna 150s, 172s, Piper Cubs and Cherokees. It took some getting used to taxing because limited visibility straight ahead.
I believe the operator may have been cranking the engine with the fuel off on the first round. When it did start, it fired and sounded as I would expect a zero-time engine to perform. Very nice. And a beautiful airplane. I still wonder about the ultimate fate of the rather bedraggled Cessna 195 that I used to see parked at the Aero Club at Bitburg AFB, Germany, in 1963.

It looks good, But it looks much much better with one.
Hope the P in C realises there's an aircraft at his rear?
