Embark on an extraordinary journey aboard the historic Arica-La Paz railway, one of South America's most iconic rail lines. This video captures the first segment of a cab ride from Viacha, a key Bolivian railway hub near La Paz to the remote border town of Charaña. Viacha junction with lines to Oururo, Antofagasta via Uyuni and Villazon on Argentinian border, also unused line to La Paz and Lake Titicaca north to Peru and this line to Arica in Chile via Charaña. The railway, with its breath taking mountain vistas and historic significance, traverses rugged landscapes, showcasing Bolivia's dramatic terrain.
Originally inaugurated in 1913, the Arica-La Paz railway was constructed under the Treaty of Peace and Friendship of 1904 between Chile and Bolivia. It remains the shortest rail connection between the Bolivian highlands and the Pacific coast, stretching 440 km (273 miles), with 233 km (145 miles) crossing Bolivian territory. The railway's engineering includes seven tunnels and previously featured a rack system on its Chilean portion, emphasizing the steep gradients of this trans-Andean route.
This section highlights the vibrant Andean scenery, local towns, and the cultural essence of this historical railway. The line's historical importance and its role in transporting minerals and goods make this journey a must-watch for rail enthusiasts and history lovers alike.
The line is operated by Feroviaria Andina. At the moment they run three passenger services.
