This piece is part of Hindemith's complete works for flute released by Stathis Karapanos on the Ondine label.
In his eight compositions for an unaccompanied stringed instrument Hindemith transferred the free linear development of the melody, as demonstrated paradigmatically by Johann Sebastian Bach in the Sonaten und Partiten für Violine solo (BWV 1001- 1006), to the musical language of the twentieth century. In these works the outer form, phrasings, and metrical emphases lose their significance; the high points of the melodic lines and their buildup and relaxation of tension merely follow an inner logic.
