  • It’s astonishing how angry some people will get if you try to take away their religion of revenge. They’re terribly upset by the idea that God might give divine favor to those they deem unworthy of it-to those who do not belong to their kind of people. The very idea that God might have mercy on all is condemned as blasphemy. This is exactly what Jesus encountered when he preached in his hometown of Nazareth.

Superb content. I have a question about the blurb in the description which I am wrestling with in my own life and relations and communities etc:
"It’s astonishing how angry some people will get if... They’re terribly upset by the idea that..."
How necessary is it to evoke, or at least deliberately point at, this sort of anger when proclaiming the reign of the unconditionally forgiving King Jesus? How necessary is it to flirt with getting flung off cliffs for believing and pushing the unsurpassed message of Apokatastasis? Is there a more tactful or winsome way to phrase the good news that can win over these souls that are easily angered? Is there a more winsome way to draw them in to the beautiful Gospel besides using "them" terminology? In pointing fingers at "them" and self-congratulating that we are kenotic and merciful, and "not like them", are we at all in danger of othering, doing precisely that which we condemn? If the point is to not draw lines between "us and them", is there a way we can include even these folks into our presentation of the gospel? I guess another way of phrasing the question is: How essential is it to deliberately poke the bears when proclaiming the unfailingly good news of Apokatastasis? Is living in Christ now inextricably linked to kenotic self-sacrifice that we must also burn bridges and ships, burn our reputation, burn away our belonging to in-groups (already fragile as it is), burn the assumed collective sense of allegiance to in-group normative assumptions and beliefs? When Jesus called his disciples to follow him, was he from the outset making it unmistakeably clear to them that they were all going to die following him, or did he let that implication come later as it dawned at them in realization afterwards, after they'd already followed him for 3.5 years, after all for the most part they did not expect Jesus to die, and none were immediately ready to be crucified with him that day. If Jesus came for the diseased, and if the merciful are the blessed ones, then ought our hearts not to beat with mercy for the unmerciful, as they are in outer darkness, and then how is it helpful to proceed to cast them out from among us, or make it even more difficult for them to enter the kingdom? If this violent mob outrage is (though they themselves will not acknowledge it as they are still blind to it) a marker of the diseased in need of the hospital, then having identified those in need of the all-restoring medicine, what does it look like to come as a nurse to the dangerously angry and violent American Evangelical hometown, bringing soul-healing medicine that is tailored to the heart language of the Evangelical psyche? Before a massive surgery, whether a heart surgery, or brain surgery, aren't anaesthetics first applied to lessen a violent reaction from the patient being treated for urgent care? Can kingdom gospel seeds be planted quietly, leaven mixed in imperceptibly, mustard-weed seeds scattered in the dark of night, or does the gospel have to arrive in a blinding light like a frontal assault to the powers that be?
Not sure how clear my question is, as I am still wrestling internally as well as often finding myself embroiled in these situations whenever I bring up the greater hope in our majestic King. If anyone has answers or further wishes to discuss this question, I am all ears! Thank you.

You know you're on to something when critics opt to go after your physical appearance rather than the content of your message.
