Thanks again to everyone who is still watching this - would anyone be interested in more footage from Palau? I'm considering going back to Peleliu and maybe some even smaller islands nearby and taking much more high quality footage with a stabiliser, drone etc. Could show a lot more close-up details of the machinery if that's what people are interested in.
I can only speak for myself, but just do what you do. Just being able to see this part of history is beyond appreciated and honestly, makes me want to go myself. Thanks man

I was in Palau in the early 80's the tanks and guns in the woods were still in good condition. Not so much, now

It’s beautiful in a strange way to see how nature breaks down and decompose our machines of death. Like all bad things will one day be gone. I like that thought. Gone - but not forgotten.
Just wanted to say thanks to everyone who has been watching/sharing this over the last few days; it's really nice to see a lot of comments from people who are genuinely interested (and a lot more knowledgeable about military history than I am). Coming here was one of the occasions when I felt like I was really "travelling" rather than just being a tourist, in the sense of getting to see somewhere that not too many people have been to. I wish I had brought a better camera and my drone along too, but I also like to travel light so in this case my battered old Go Pro had to suffice. Thanks Paul-- My dad when he finally opened up spoke about the buddies he lost on Peleliu-- swore many times he shoulda bit the dust there! He said after a couple weeks there, it was all blood and maggots everywhere.......

my uncle was a coxswain on the landing craft. Made three landings one was Peleliu. Had three boat shout out from underneath him. His hearing shot for the rest of his life. One of 5 brothers who fought in the war Howard, Major, Russell, Jack and Bob. All saw combat and all came home in one piece, thank god. My grandmother had 5 stars in her window.

That is the actual building depicted in so many films and games. That was a major battle its crazy to see how quiet it is considering how insane it was in 1944
Incorrect. what you see there is the old Japanese communications building in Airai state on babeldaob island (though it was depicted in one movie based on fictional events) no battle ever took place there, it was only bombed and strafed.
What you're thinking of is the Peleliu airfield building, which is not depicted in the video.

The silence and tranquility is what gets me watching these kind of videos. Very well knowing that at one point in time this area must have been hell on earth for the men who landed there during the War.

My grandfather got his purple heart and bronze Star on peleliu. He was running ammo even though he was but several times . Because of his actions and actions of fellow Marines we where able to take the island.
My grandfather was awarded a purple heart, too. Was a marine fighting on this island.
I’ve been there on a scuba diving trip. Spent 3 days anchored in the harbor that the military used and expanded after they landed. We were able to tour the island and see most of the stuff in this video and go into some of the caves that the Japanese used for defense. We even got to dive on a couple of the Japanese ships that were sunk around the Palau islands during the attack! A great thrill for this WWII buff.
You're lucky, it's an amazing experience that not too many people get to have. I went into the caves too - no video unfortunately because I didn't have a proper light. Some bits of them were filled with horrifying-looking crickets. Wish I'd done some of the wreck dives!

I was in Guam when my father was still in the Navy, back in the late 70's. We went exploring in the Jungle and found some tanks and landing craft that had been hit in the U.S. landings to retake Guam. Not as much as you found there though.

My great grandpa told us he hid 30 or so Japanese guns and a large stock pile of grenades in a tree trunk 400 yards north of the main airfield building hoping to go back for it all one day. He said it was one of the few living trees still standing afterward that probably won’t help you find it but worth a try

What I found disturbing was the _lack_ of nature. In 1945 that area would have been teeming with countless insects, birds and other animals - now they are all gone. Even more disturbing is that no one even notices or gives a shit. This is how we will sleep walk to our own destruction.

Sad that this battle is so unknown. We are told about Iwo Jima, Okinawa, Wake Island, GuadalCanal. But I really don't remember hearing about Peleliu until reading With the Old Breed and later the TV series The Pacific. This was truly a turning point(among many) in the Pacific Theater as it was really the first battle that the Japanese drastically changed their tactics, which they would enhance and build upon for Iwo Jima where American casualties exceeded that of the Japanese for the first and only time. And it is widely believed this battle wasn't necessary and could have been skipped. Such loss. Semper Fi Marines past and present!
The air field was what they where worried about. Get it even semi up and running even enough to use as suicide runs can do a lot of damage from behind American lines. That was the big threat
It's amazing how the jungle reclaims the land. I've seen pictures of the island just after the invasion. Hardly any trees. That beach you showed, black and white photo of Marines floating in the water. Too the Marines and Japanese soldiers who fought and died there RIP.
A hundred years from now, all that equipment will still be there. Those islands will be a constant reminder of that war. Great video. Thank you for sharing with the world.

Its amazing that the only evidence of a battle on that island is the wreckage of instruments of war. Other than that, the battlefield is gone, nature reclaimed that island to point of it being eerie.
May the souls of those marines who died there find peace and never forget.

The memories of my home being used as a battlefield, all respect to the soldiers that fell on either side during this battle, but the stories of my people who inhabited these islands for thousands of years seem to not get the same amount of respect and remembrance they deserve

It’s so weird to think, that many of these things were exactly what they saw and heard. The color of the trees, the sound and looks of the water, and the sounds from the jungle. We are experiencing the things they did, except for the fighting ofcourse

Faint sounds of soldiers emit from the long lost aircraft and land vehicles of the nations. Remembering all the pain they went through. The depression and guilt they suffered. Sounds of gunshots, artillery barrages, planes diving down, and carpet bombs. All being heard by infantry. And finally. Your old man. Sits down at the front porch. Rocking back and forth on his rocking chair.

About 1,600 American troops died during and after the landings, but of nearly 11,000, only about 100 Japanese survived the invasion force of over 18,000 Marines on Peleliu.
Eventually, the Marines were forced to build barricades after giving up trying to flush them all out of the defensive caves and tunnels they'd honeycombed the surrounding area with, instead just sealing them in and allowing them to die by the thousands.
The Japanese government has spent the last three quarters of a Century trying to find and repatriate as many as possible in an ongoing process.
These wreckages and remains are especially poignant because they still lie exactly where the equipment was knocked out of the battle after a couple months of fighting a campaign that was originally thought to last less than a week prior to making landfall.
A person could spend MONTHS there, searching around.
The battlefield guide is named Des Matsuro, he's a local and is tasked with the small team of tour guides informing the thousands of visitors to the island every year. Definitely the person to look up beforehand, unless trudging around unguided is more your style.
To this day the Japanese government returns periodically in their continuing effort to find more human remains for repatriation, reuniting them with their families, and posterity overall.

I've been very into WWII history all my life. To see this stuff just..left there..history just sitting there is just incredible. They fought there and when the survivors left basically said in English & Japanese, "Ah well, we're just leaving this stuff here. Let's go home."

These places are hallowed ground. The loss of life. The humanity. God bless the men who lost they're lives.
Once filled with noise of explosions, gunfire and screams. Now but silent and calm. Paradise, with a very dark past.
The Marines learned very quickly how to storm a beach under fire.
They also saw that using the British design landing craft and tactics were suicidal; so they designed their own.
The Marine designed landing craft allowed the Marines to drive up the beach and reach cover before discharging the men.
The British landing craft were totally useless, and would get swamped by even small waves, or get stuck on even minor obstructions. So the men had to jump overboard. Often into deep water, where they were dragged down by their equipment and drowned.
In addition, the front ramp funneled the men directly into the field of fire of defending machine gunners. The result was a slaughter.
The Marines sent a general to Britain for a meeting with Montgomery and Mountbatten, who were responsible for planning the Normandy landings.His mission was to advise them of the equipment and the tactics developed by the Marines based on their landing experience.
Take a look at the landing craft in this video, and compare it to those used at Normandy. Notice that many of them are relatively deep inland from the beach.
At the one and only meeting between the British and the Marines, Montgomery said: "If we ever plan to storm a small island in the Pacific, we may seek your advice. In the meantime, we have no need of your advice".
How many brave men died in Normandy because of the narcissistic arrogance of Montgomery and Mountbatten?

That being said Monty wasn't always right as history shows.
@@daytona1965 the war ships they were on before storming the beaches on D-Day were actually British naval ships since they were in the English Chanel. One of the few things Saving Private Ryan got wrong was the drivers of the landing crafts being American when in reality they were actually British naval officers. So, the original comment about the arrogance of the British is true and cost the lives of thousands of American, British, Australian, Canadian etc… troops because of the awful design of their landing crafts.

By mid-1944, they were all replaced by much more capable 75 mm (2.95 in) gun armed LVT(A)-4.

Always great respect for the Marines who are the greatest amphibious assault warriors ever, but it has to be remembered that the Marines were withdrawn from this island after five weeks of fighting with heavy losses and it’s commander kicked back to the U.S. to take a non-combat assignment. The final three months were fought by the US Army’s 81st Infantry Division who had to go cave by cave until the Japanese were finally defeated in the mountains on the north of the island. My father fought there with the 81st Infantry (The Wildcats). In fact his battalion commander was the highest ranking officer killed in the invasion when he was shot by a sniper while at my dad’s company command post. There is a great memorial to the men on the 81st on the eastern side of the island.
