Fangio and his coaching tree have direct ties to four different teams in the NFL now with the hiring of Joe Barry, Sean Desai, and Brandon Staley. The system helps defend the pass with versatile coverage shells and has unique fronts that eat up gaps. How will the Broncos do now that their defense is fully healthy and what's the projection for Staley in LA?
Hey! Excellent content you are making. As for future content suggestions, I would love to see some videos about the most versatile players in the league, that is to say, the Offensive and Defensive players who play at multiple positions, in the slot, out wide, LB, etc - or on Offense those players who play in the backfield, out wide, or in the slot - and get a breakdown of how their versatility can change a game. Thanks so much. Keep up your hard work.
Love it. I'll keep an eye out this season for guys that are used like that. Deebo Samuel is the first one that comes to mind. Amari Rodgers may be used similarly in Green Bay and I was expecting Etienne to have a role where he bumps all over the field before he got hurt.
Nice to see a defensive focus this week. Speaking of defense, I'd be curious to see a video on why Belichick in New England has historically had a man coverage heavy scheme. I realize with guys like Gilmore, Revis, Talib, and Law it's easier to go that way. But they've done it even with lesser if not average man coverage corners, which is my real curiosity. And still produced top 10 defenses over those years. How is he able to produce with average secondary players while still playing man-to-man so heavily? Is it technique? Is it for simplicity sake? Are they mainly bend but don't break man coverage defenses?
Great idea. I candidly don’t have a ton of knowledge of Belichick’s defense outside of his base stuff. Linebackers and safeties are big in helping patch some of those vulnerabilities for him. Hopefully All 22 is back soon and I can take a look
Belicheck is not the ordinary coach. He’s a mastermind when it comes to defense. Those vicious Giants defenses that helped win multiple SB’s back when Lawrence Taylor was there Belicheck was actually the DC for the Giants back then.Yes the Patriots won a lot SB’s due to Brady but they definitely wouldn’t have won without Belichecks defensive scheme.
@@steelwill78 not to mention, when Bill B coached the Browns with Saban as his DC, they developed match cover 3, known as rip/liz, and while Bill doesn’t run it as much, it’s still something he helped bring to football and it’s something Saban runs to this day and is still a prominent defensive strategy
@@steelwill78 Agreed on this. He too will tailor to the strength of his personnel but also has a deeper bag and trusts his own instincts on stuff than most defensive minded HCs. Guy just overprepares and will use variables like weather conditions to try use situational stuff to turn an advantage into results.
It’s how he uses them. One strategy he loves doing is double teaming the #1 receiver with a backup corner & a safety, then putting their best corner on the #2 receiver. Forces teams to beat them with their #3 & HB. Hard to consistently score that way. Also, they do a lot of cover 0 in the red zone. I guess technique plays a big part in that.
The front may adjust into a true 5-2 with the WOLB down. All depends on the matchup you get there. The safeties can still fill the alley and the coverage shell can stay the same. You're just bringing another linebacker down to match the tight end. Depending on your personnel, you can get away with having him stay off the ball as well. The big vulnerability though is that the safeties have run responsibility. So play action out of heavy personnel groupings can force them up and allow a big play opportunity behind.
basically what tony dungy created the tampa 2 style and vic advanced the tampa 2 to fit today complex offense scheme regardless if they are play 3-4 or 4-3.

Do you think this style of defense makes 3-4 superior in today’s day and age to a 4-3? The idea you showed that is implemented in putting a defense in a 4-3 look with 3-4 personnel makes it seem like 3-4 offers so much more versatility. And in today’s NFL, versatility seems to be prevalent in almost all offenses. So it seems it would make more sense for defenses to use the more versatile defense. If this trend continues, do you think 3-4 will take over and be the base personnel of most teams in the future? I think about the panthers stout defense so far this season and they also are using 3-4
My personal preference is a 3-4 defense. I think it adds more flexibility like you mentioned. I think there's a real trend towards hybrid players. Where "tweeners" weren't really on the field all that much 10-15 years ago, more and more guys are getting on the field that need to cover and tackle but aren't the prototypical size of defensive ends or the historical middle linebackers. I think the 3-4 gets more of those guys on the field so that generally, those defenses are a little more athletic. The biggest question in a 3-4 is how to use your premier pass rusher if you have one. If you always rush them from an outside linebacker position on the line of scrimmage, you're essentially running a 4-3 but with a stand-up end. The 3-4 just gives a little more flexibility to play games with those guys and give different looks to the offense. All about matching the personnel at the NFL level and what guys can play where. True noses in a 3-4 can be harder to find sometimes and the ends typically aren't pure pass rushers but do need to be able to win at times.
Can you group up the offenses ran in the nfl? And also run a kyle Shanahan special? I know a ton of coaches run that zone run scheme now but can you tailor a video to his style and play calling? I firmly believe he is the best play caller in the nfl and I am a falcons fan
Is it just me or am I seeing similarities between this version of the 3-4 and Georgia’s? And speaking of Georgia’s defense. How long do you think it it will be until we see their Mint Front in the NFL and could it work in the NFL?
It's already there. I'm not sure if anyone truly bases out of it, but I know that Staley ran it with the Rams and Flores ran it with the Dolphins. As long as you have guys that are big enough to hold up while being athletic enough to chase down and slide down the LOS, it can allow your LBs to really shine
I like this scheme the main issue I see is that it seems to be very personnel dependent. The Rams had Jalen Ramsey and Aaron Donald the two best players at their positions. Watching the Eagles and Chargers try to run this scheme with inferior personnel show that is very susceptible to the run if you don’t have great personnel because the defense plays with “light” boxes
It's hard to play stout run defense in this scheme. It's built to beat modern passing offenses and frustrated the opposing QB. It really forces the players to make a play. Does not disguise players with low football IQ and aging abilities.
Easily beaten by good QBs. Miami only seemed to thrive when Fangio relented to blitzing. All of Fangio's tree got fired this past offseason and Miami had no problems letting him walk. And Jevon Holland was happy to see him go.
As a Bears fan I found Fangio very frustrating. We should have beaten the Eagles in that playoff game. Nick Foels had an injury chest-relateds. Fangio didn't touch him. Doesn't like blitzing. Dies by the cover two. No pressure. No balls.
Fangio proved that his scheme does work. But as an Eagles fan, with the amount of talent that we have on defense; and Fangio as our defensive consultant why isn't his ( Fangio's) system working with Gannon as our defensive coordinator?
Cause Gannon was a stubborn egomaniac prick. He really seems to have known absolutely nothing and just ran with the defensive talent success. When the talent needed him to lead, he was out thinking Arizona instead.
It did not and you or I could’ve predicted it. Teams that get the ball out quickly continue to dice us apart while our guys sit back with the complete inability to stop it
Lets see a few key players get big stats, the team misses the playoffs. and this undiscovered flower gets a giant contract to be a babysiter to a top SF defense in 24. Not a fan
Staleys defense DOES blitz and their front seven is not orcastrasted not the same. Vangio runs much more 4-3 zone coverage their defensive schemes are not the same.
Staley was at 25.4% last year on blitzes and Fangio at 27.9%. Both below league average. They do have some differences but operate out of the same shell. Staley is definitely more of an odd front guy than Fangio is though. Same tree with some smaller philosophical differences in how they want to run things and how they match their stuff with their personnel.
