  • Today we are exploring and documenting the three-story, Mediterranean Revival-style facility also known as Cooley High School. It opened its doors in 1928. The school was named in honor of Thomas M. Cooley, a nineteenth-century jurist and former Chief Justice of the Michigan Supreme Court. Cooley was also a charter member, and first chairman, of the Federal Interstate Commerce Commission.
Due to budget constraints and declining enrollment, Cooley High School was closed at the end of the 2009-2010 academic year. On September 30, 2017, a fire severely damaged the auditorium and surrounding rooms. What's left is shocking.

Imagine how nice that school was in its early days after being built with all the marble and architecture.

It was absolutely gorgeous especially our auditorium. I graduated from this school in 1984 when over 3000 kids attended. Some of the best times of my life took place in this school and we literally just had our 40th class reunion last weekend on July 13, 2024. It was an AWESOME weekend ♥️💃🏾💃🏾

My mother attended this school (Class of 1964). Soon after she graduated, she moved to Austin to attend the University of Texas. I asked her why she chose to move so far from home and she said that even then it was obvious Detroit was on the downward trend. I'm not going to show this to her as I'm sure it would be extremely depressing. But, she will tell you Detroit was a great city in the 50's and early 60's. Thanks for posting.

This was interesting. From 1960 to 1964, when I was a toddler, my family lived a couple of blocks away from Cooley High School on Marlowe. I hadn't realized that back in the day it looked so impressive inside.

This is so interesting to me. I want to see Cooley HS in the days when it was new. I'll look for that video on UA-cam. I work at an Elementary school in Dallas Texas. I work in a very old school that was built in 1947 and opened in 1948. The kitchen is so tiny by today's standards. The dishwasher sinks are smaller than the cooking sheet pans of the more modern times. That's a very tricky way to wash them. It's interesting to do but I do it every Monday thru Friday. I do love my job. I'm glad I'm 95lbs and I can squeeze through tight spaces though my food cart doesn't fit in and out of the cafeterias very well. It's tricky and we can maneuver them with some creative wiggling of the carts. I'm trying to imagine how small people must have been in the 40s and 50s. The USA has an obesity problem since before I was born. Maybe the USA didn't have that problem in the 40s thru the 80s? I don't know. I wasn't born yet. I'm just guessing. 🤷🏻‍♀️ Note: I was once obese myself. No shame or hate will be tolerated.

A lot of Detroit Public Schools had walls for dividers so they could divide the pool and room at the same time so Boys were on one side and girls on the other side. Both sides had a deep end. Us boys had to swim naked so the girls would find peek holes in the wall.

    • @dawnlaidler9070
