I discovered Ina and her wonderful swing orchestra in the mid-90s on tv, I think it was the Turner Movie Channel. Wowsie!, I was blown away. She was great.
Oh my! This is the best thing that I've discovered this week!😀 "Doin' The Suzy Q!" I am! Wow-e! "That's all there is! There isn't any more..." Oh, is that so?! Well, I'm 'bout to play it again!😆😅💖
I'm amused how the shiny floor of the stage gets all scuffed up by her vigorous tap-dancing in most of the shots here. In big-budget movies of the '30s, between each shot they'd wipe the floors to make them all clean and unblemished when major stars were dancing.
and just 20 years old here. She was born in Chicago in a family registered as 'negro' and 'mulatto'. The only way she could have a career at that time was to pass as white.

She’s definitely black but today in America the term “passing” is losing its understanding. Ina is a classic example of passing. Blacks people then and now can see it but a lot of other people don’t get it

I didnt know she passed for white! All the controversy back then, surely they wouldnt allow her to perform if they knew she was black! 🤦🏾🤦🏾
When I was a young kid Ina Ray Hutton was on channel 5 in L.A.. I think I appreciate her talents much more now.
FANTASTIC !!
This is the kind of stuff that got people through the Depression. Kept their spirits up.
