I really like my GE microwave which I control using my Miss A or my Google devices. I am also severely visually impaired, and cannot see the keypad or the display anymore. There is a huge difference between cooking something for three minutes and six minutes, which was really easy to screw up in the past.
Hi Brian, you mentioned the Tuya presence sensor, working with smart things. However, the app showed the FP two sensor in the video. How did you connect the Tuya sensor to smartthings? Also does the Aotec wall remote work with Alexa? I purchased Zooz switches and they do not flow from smartthings down to Alexa. Working on finding a solution lol. Great video! can’t wait for next week.
Hey Joe, good questions! The Tuya Zigbee Presence sensors go easily into ST through the Zigbee radio on the hubs. So you'll need an ST hub, but the details are in this video for how I got it connected and working right: ua-cam.com/video/D_uwxD_9-9s/v-deo.html. Look for the timecode in that video with Tuya. :) As for the Aeotec, nope. Don't hope for that flow. Remotes that work with Alexa is tricky and changing right now, so I'd hold a little bit.
Brian, after many years, you have convinced this old techie to get a SmartThings system. Even though Aeotec is the primary vendor now of this technology, I will continue the purchase on this coming Prime day. My starting application will be with the Zooz Titan Smart Water Leak Valve and a collection of Aeotec water sensors. Thanks. I'm a long time subscriber.
Great video! Gidget stole the show! This Aqara T1 LED lights are my most recent purchase, very happy with them and how they work the door sensors. May have to give WIZ another try. Bought one bulb and it never connects. Although I really need some candelabra bulbs first!
Hey, Brian, have't you become Mr. Domesticated?? I enjoyed this video and am doing several of the same things you are, but sometimes with different brands. Nevertheless, the concepts are sound and interesting. I will make one comment on my differences and that is with leak detectors. For several years I've used YoLink leak detectors and main water shutoff valve operator. Why? Because they work when there's no power to your house and no network. The sensors at battery powered, of course as is the valve operator. Furthermore, they use LoRa so if you water valve is in a remote area of your house, you don't have to worry about having a decent WiFi/Zigbee/Zwave signal in that area. Finally, it works with Alexa and even Homekit if you have a Homebridge set up as I do. Keep up the good work, Brian. Thank you.
ahahhaahaha! I'm Mr. Domesticated? Nawwww, I'm Mr. Lazy. :) But you're right about the YoLink one. Great option and one of my favorites. I've just wanted the integration with ST. :)
Hi Brian, I use Philiphs hue motion sensor in the kitchen. This turns on the central light (bulb) and the worktop lighting ( 2 led strip). The motion sensor has 2 rechargeable AAA batteries. I don't understand why sometimes it only turns on the light with the reduced brightness. It can be very annoying at night when it turns on with 10-30% brightness. What could be the reason for this? I'm sure you can help and it's a simple thing I'm not paying attention to.
Most devices require an actual button push, So when people use smart home outlets I see no actual benefit. I saw that you mentioned that the kettle you could turn on via Wifi. How about the air fryer, or any other appliances? Can they be turned off/on when away from home?
Dreo specifically doesn't, but honestly...my InstaPot did and it wasn't used a ton in our home. Unless it's a quick trip out, you don't want food sitting out in a cooker for a whole day. So it helps, but I haven't had it be all that useful. Thus, haven't focused on it. I'm sure Dreo could implement it by the way. All their other appliances work that way
Great ideas. al true the lights idea is really great. but that would annoy me really bad when changing. lol. also how is that Tuya Zigbee Presence Sensor compered to something like the FP 1 or 2? also that wather walv how big is that one from the pipes? would love to have something like that.
Hey Finn, That Tuya Zigbee presence sensor is a cheap, simple version of what the FP2 is trying to do. It doesn't do zones or fall detection, so it's just a simple on/off device really. People detected or not. Otherwise, very similar technology and very similar purpose. :) The valve...welllllll it's a decent size for sure. Measurements and a pretty good breakdown are in this video! ua-cam.com/video/-OQ8quTqVdw/v-deo.html
Aqara is more expensive for sure, and I find this a little easier to hide away. It's not a preference by any means, but an ease of use and decor thing. :)
Just tried the adaptive lighting integration, and the Issue is that the previous setting is loaded first, so at night it is not usable for me, you are first blinded, then the light sets to lower brightness.
Some good ideas here. I have Aqara water sensors under every sink in the house that have indeed saved me some grief in the past but I have yet to invest in a water turn-off bot. It's the sort of thing that would really help with peace of mind while on vacation... As for smart kitchen gear proper, I notice you didn't cover smart major appliances (fridges, ovens, stoves/cooktops or ventilation hoods). By and large, we're avoiding built-in smart capabilities in these things (as a mostly very expensive gimmick) for our planned kitchen reno, though one thing that does give me pause is the potential usefulness of smart kitchen ventilation triggered by an air quality sensor. (We'll be cooking with a gas cooktop soon and I'm slightly worried about low-level gas leaks...)
Yeahhhh, I don't know that the major appliances are ready yet David. I think we're getting closer with the Home Connectivity Alliance about to hit, but...we have to wait and see if those are really worth it. You could do a hood with a smart relay. That's actually something I think a lot of people could look at!
I might have gone slightly overboard with lighting in my kitchen. I have the ceiling "can" downlights, but I also put LED Strips above the cabinets, as well as the task lighting LED strips under the cabinets. That said, it can work well at different times of the day, at night when I only want a dim light (gettign up for a drink or something) I found the can's a little bright, even at lowest setting ,so the LED Strip works well in that situation. The Air Pruifier is a compulsory thing as far as I am concerned. I bought a Xiaomi 3H a couple of years ago during all the lockdowns, and I would not be without it now. When cooking, and even various times of the day, I have it automated fully depending on air quality.
I've been looking for a way to automate my kitchen lights with a motion sensor and waiting for Google to adapt motion sensors without hubs so I don't have more than one smart home ecosystem going on, but that ZigBee presence sensor and how configurable is completely convinced me to get a ZigBee smart hub thanks Bryan
@@AutomateYourLife maybe something along the lines of: when the sensor sees you're next to the sink, the disposal starts grinding. But that wouldn't be as practical. Antoher sensor would be needed, like for instance if you had one of those smart taps (xiaomi had one I believe) so that you could use the condition of when the tap is running too. This is just a thought, dunno how good it would be. For all I know, the disposals could already have dumb sensors for when the water is running (I don't own one).
just because you can automate doesn't mean you should. dog feeders should only be used if you can't be home. i have smart lights and a robo vacuum but there is such a thing as going to far. it would probably take you longer to make a cup of tea from an app than to walk into the kitchen and turn on a kettle. I like my smart home to be discreet and helpful not just automate because you can. if you have to actually interact with something to acomplish it's end goal trying to automate it seems over kill.
That's a lot of "I should not" based on your values. And you get to decide that, but everything I showed in this video adds options for how you control it. It doesn't Automate for the sake of automating, and in fact, I automated only my lights, my water valve, and I scheduled a kettle. Everything else adds options for control. I don't go into any apps.
Thanks! All the best to you!
Same to you! Too kind Big Bear!

Sad for you being a single parent. 😢 Hope that will change soon.
No need to be sad for me! I’m happy! But thank you for caring
You need to try the Anova combi oven. It will blow any smart air fryer out of the water.
I dunno! I like Chefmaker, but I'll look for a chance to try the Anova :)
This is weird, I'm currently looking for a smart microwave that works with Alexa and saw your video about smart kitchens! Are you spying on me 😅
I’m not!! But there’s no smart microwave in this one soooo…spoiler alert
@@AutomateYourLife just researching to see what ones are out there and available to the UK
