Weekend at Grandma’s

- Awhile back, I started working on a rug that I wanted to make entirely out of hand processed yarn. I wanted to challenge myself by not only shearing our sheep, but to actually use the wool to make a Navajo rug by using traditional methods. I took on the challenge but soon realized that it would be done faster with some help and advice from one of my great grandmas. So one evening I drove over and we talked for a few hours, I told her about my idea and plans of what I wanted to accomplish, I asked her if she would be willing to help me. She agreed to do so! I already informed her that I would be recording, she was a little shy and hesitant at first but later on she became a natural. She didn’t mind the camera at all and now she’s use to it. We then made plans for a weekend to work entirely on carding and spinning the wool that I had with me. From the moment I got there, we immediately got to work! I remember my great grandpa talking about how excited she was the next morning because she woke up earlier than usual. While I was still asleep, he already had coffee going and ready to start to day. I immediately jumped up and met her outside before the heat started to pick up. Being able to sit, talk and just process the wool into yarn was everything I always thought of. Now I can say I actually did that, I always heard other people saying they remember doing the same thing with their grandmothers. I understand that there aren’t as much translations in the video but I felt it meaning of it all would be lost or misinterpreted somewhere along the way. I really do hope you enjoy this video!Recently after talking with her awhile back, she admitted that she most likely won’t be able to card and spin wool anymore because her body is getting old. This only makes me more happy to know she was able to help me at one point in time. Whenever she does come around to visit, she loves to look at my loom, my weaving tools all while admiring the entire room and atmosphere.

I never had a chance to meet my grandparents in this lifetime. Listening to her is heartfelt. Very strong. Love her stories. At 58yo, I don't speak Navajo, but I understand fully. Hence, UA-cam. Thank you for sharing your lives.

I live about an hour from them so I try to make time to stop by. it's hard to make plans to visits but we both have an understanding since she also has livestock, as I do as well.
As your grandma speaks of how she learned how to weave and brushing out the yarn, it brought back memories of my childhood with my own grandmother. You are blessed to still have her and listen to her words of wisdom. 😊

Oh wow...I really miss my great grandma n my grandma and my mom they had sheeps n did rug weaving n all that...I learned how to weave a rug from them but now forgotten...I live in city...I miss everything on rez ..thank you for your grandma n your video of her...

My mom was telling me that her joints were hurting for the first time. I was like, “Damn.” 😢But at least you can sit and talk about wool and everything. It’s reassuring that if she were younger, she’d help you out. I always imagine our elders being young. 😊

Came back to this at 3:00am because I miss my Grandma. I miss feeding the chickens, guineas, but I don't miss the droppings! The best laugh I ever had with Grandma was when I was looking up to the rafters where a couple had nested & not seeing the HUGE pile of droppings where I put my right hand. Grandma laughed herself QUIET that time. One of my fave memories. Thank you, needed it to today. (✷‿✷)
Carding wool is hard work because it’s repetitive motion for many hours, just like spinning can take many hours, but Omg it is so fun.

Do you know what I would give to spend the weekend with my Grandparents again? To lay my head in Grandma's lap & all the bad stuff go away? To watch Grandpa win the watermelon seed spitting contest AGAIN because he left all 3 sets of dentures in the chest of drawers? I miss my living history every day.
