Completely agree. Given how many definitions and explanations there are out in the world, it took me a while to find a way to properly articulate this, but I've come to realize that "style" simply refers to your particular way of doing something, and it can be applied to any field, not just visual arts. If you're drawing a human being, said human being will need to have eyes and obey certain rules in terms of proportions and internal consistency. That's the objective reality of the subject that you've chosen to draw, and it's not part of the style. The style is how you go about doing it and how the final drawing will look like. Same thing in, say, cooking. What defines a particular chef's style? Is it the recipe that they make? No, a carbonara is still a carbonara, and the basic recipe is still the same. But every chef cooks it in a slightly different way, maybe putting in the ingredients in a different order, or in different proportions, or cooking it for a slightly longer or shorter time, or maybe adding one new ingredient to the mix, etc. All of this results in a slightly different, entirely unique carbonara. That's the style. But it's still a carbonara, and it has to obey all the basic rules of a carbonara.
Wish my art teacher explained it this way. Girlie banned anime and forbid people from drawing an anime style of any kind because she assumed it was plagiarism. I tried not to draw anime but the way I drew eyes I guess was reminiscent of anime? Cause she told me that that was anime and if I didn’t draw the eyes “correctly” (ie like realism, a fully oval shaped eye) or else it was plagiarism (despite the other features like the nose and teeth not falling under a typical anime style. I figured she banned anime because a lot of people like to draw an anime style and it’s hard to know if it’s their original drawing or not since people don’t typically color their work for journals but I think it’s obvious when someone traces and even if they used a reference it’s good practice. Besides, it’s hard to trace on a giant canvas for painting or transfer it to a larger sheet of paper and journals were a smaller part of the grade. I don’t think it was necessary at all

When talking of visual arts there is an infinite amount of shapes and relationships between them. An artist takes a limited selection and applies them to their artwork forming a system with more or less coherence . That limited set of shapes and their relationships is its art style. Anatomy or perspective or light and shadow are fixed sets of knowledge from the world. Objective information based on observation. Traduced to bidimensional systems of shapes and then intersected with art styles. For example, a general manga style has predetermined rules based on tradition. Someone that works in that style is taking that predetermined set of shapes and works with that limitation. with some tweaks it can also find more personal choice of shapes but always within that realm of manga. The same would happen to someone painting hierogliphics in ancient egypt. Works within a previously selected group of shapes.

This was explained badly. The point of the short is, "If you do something incorrectly, don't try to cover it up by saying 'it's my style' because it's not, it was a mistake." Just to expand on this, there's a difference between understanding perspective and animation and purposefully breaking the rules to create an effect. Stretching, changes in style, and perspective changes are all fine, _if_ you purposefully _chose_ to do that to give a certain effect. Don't try to cover up a mistake with "It's just my artstyle", instead you can take the constructive criticism and either change the artwork, or keep it in mind for later art you make. This allows you to grow as an artist.
don't know why you dont have more likes, i completely agree with you. the way the short presented it made it look like they encourage people to stay in a fixed art style if their previous self chose that path to justify art style vs mistake.
I don't particularly agree with this one. Some inconsistencies can be omitted to emphasize certain things, such as Mickey Mouse's ears that remain visible even if he turns around, or how in some animes they erase part of the glasses so that the expression can be read better
Well yeah sure but what about expression? Depending on the expression the shape of the eye can change dramatically as well. That bottom line being straight across as opposed to curved downwards could be the difference between a happy expression and a forlorn one.
This video explained it pretty badly but.. The message is more of "Don't try to cover up mistakes and inconsistency with the phrase 'It's my artstyle'." Intentional changes are absolutely ok because you did them purposefully. If every angle the character is in looks different for no apparent reason it's jarring.
IMO you can have different sub-styles, if you will, within the same style. Take MHA as an example. Midoriya is drawn differently from buff All Might, who is drawn differently from Tsuyu, etc. They’re drawn in different styles within the same style if that makes sense
I do think its possible to stylistically ignore perspective and the rules of 3 dimensions with more stylized works But the thing that makes it an art style is the intensional repetition of breaking specific rules The easiest example i can think of is Mickey Mouse's ears, how regardless of angle and 3d perspective, they are both showing and are full circles on top of his head What it comes down to is as an artist developing their style, you have to learn the rules first to break them later
An object can be simultaneously stylized and 3-dimensional, such that its drawn shape (projected in perspective) will change with different angles of view, but it's absolute shape will be recognizably consistent. Sometimes, often in comics and animation, some perspective rules get broken and objects don't comply with perspective. Nowadays I can't give many examples except for some "anime profile view mouth" that's sitting on the cheek.
I’ll give another example: Mickey Mouse’s ears. Also don’t quote me on this but I’m pretty sure the side anime mouth is made specifically to cut costs since that way they don’t have to redraw the whole head shape every time.
this is only valid for people striving for perfect anatomy, which would not be people talking about styles. there are many art styles out there that bend the reality of the human body into proportions that are far gone simply for style. many gore art posters or people who follow cubism for example. so yes, art styles that dont conform to the laws of anatomy do exist and many look good
But the thing for abract artists is, they are aware they are breaking fundametals, which they already studied previously. People who are ignorant/clueless are a different story, since they try to defend themselves without knowing they have no idea what they are defending about.
This is far from true. Most people strive to have a style *and* have perfect anatomy. Not understanding how basic objects work at different angles will lead to terrible or very inconsistent work over and over again.
My art style is: "Fuck around and find out." Edit: Id say thank you for the likes, but actually. Fuck you, my notifications have been full of like notifs
respectfully, i disagree. the question of mistake vs. style is quite simple: style is intentional, while mistakes are not. just look at vewn (an animation artist on UA-cam) - their art is inconsistent on purpose, because it adds character to their works basically, the example you gave is only a mistake if the artist *wants* their style to be 3D consistent. if they do it intentionally, then it's an art style
I’ve seen a professionally animated anime where they constantly had 2 mouths from the side. It was pretty distracting for 2 episodes but then it melted in and unless you reminded yourself you didn’t see it. It definitely seemed intentional.. so I would say it was a style. Not a good style since it was distracting but.. yaa
you dont need perfect 3 dimentional perportion scaling for your 2d world. You just need to draw the eye from above the same everytime, and from below the same every time. But just cuz they don't rotate perfectly in 3d doesn't make them mistakes. Otherwise 99% of cartoonist make mistakes every time they draw
Yes exactly. For example, The Powerpuff Girls has an extremely flattened style that doesn’t translate well to 3D, but consistency is maintained and the intention behind the style is obvious as a result.
My take is: its stylization if the difference from reality is intentional. Its a mistake if not. And certain stylization choices can vary even within an individuals artwork for various reasons. The eye doffences could be a stylistic intentional choice meant to communicate something within the medium. Bigger eyes are usual used to indicate innocence or kindness, while more even, lower eyes tend to indicate focus, agitation, and more
My art style constantly changes since I draw characters, magic items, etc in a different way, there are mistakes I admit but that’s what bring out the charm in art. Sometimes I don’t feel like drawing.. I just lazy draw and think to myself how am I going me look amazing because still want to put some effort into it.
As an artist, I've found that continuing to draw, take tips, and practice really helps with finding out style and improving. Sometimes, you may have different styles. So dont get discouraged by art you're jealous of.
I see what this is trying to aim at, but things don't always have to be 100% 3D consistent, even some 3D animators I've seen sometimes put features out of place because it looks better and it emphasizes details they want, your art style can be more realistic (being 100% 3D consistent) or cartoony (focusing more on emphasizing details), only thing that is important however is to be consistent
yeah like past a certain angle of head traverse/elevation i stop drawing the eye on the far side, i can't fit that many lines in such a small space and most of my characters do in fact have noses.
If you're comfortable with how you draw now, and want to jump to defend your art, he's not saying it's bad to make mistakes. He's giving tips that MAY be helpful for improving
nah i'm gonna be a hater here, if it looks better the "wrong" way why the hell would i do it the "right" way? it's like how the greeks made their buildings slightly wobbled so that they would actually look more appealing when seen from below, it's a deliberate choice made by the artist for the good of the drawing
The Greeks had to learn how to build a decent building first before they tweaked the structure. A lot of the "geniuses" who claim that they don't need to understand structure would cause multiple deaths if they did what the Greeks did.
While I agree that it's consistency that makes an artstyle, I don't agree with you example. 3D model is a bad way to demonstrate it. You can have a certain consistent way of drawing eyes from a lower angle, and a certain consistent way of drawing them from some other angle. These two don't necessarily have to be anatomically or structurally similar to each other. as an obvious example let's take Snoopy from Charlie Brown. He isn't anatomically or structurally cohesive in 3d space. some angles "don't make sense" on him. Yet he is completely consistent, because he is drawn in Charles M. Schulz' artstyle.
While this video is true, its also important to remember that anyone can make art for fun and artists dont have to be constantly improving in their chosen hobby. If someone likes drawing with those mistakes on purpose, great! Like purposefully making ears an x instead of drawing them out, for example. We put too much pressure on artists and ourselves too when we're just hobbyists 😅
@@scarlettefoxx5585 wym? It is a style choice a mistake is something not intended I was just correcting your example I know the point of what you were saying
@@user-sg6ii3eo9i how? They purposely make the ears big and draw an x like I said mistakes are not intentional I’m pretty sure the artist knows that’s not how you draw ears this example is poor
Theres a difference between having an artstyle that isn't 100% as a human would look in real life, and just not caring if its correct and wanting to have fun. Both are okay.
I feel like this sort of argument is only made by amateur artists. Style isn't 3d space or perspective or anatomy or this or that. It's about knowing the fundamentals and purposely breaking it into what YOU prefer. Beginners making a mistake is a mistake, a professional making a "mistake" is a choice.
It’s not a mistake if it’s intentional. Sure that’s good perspective, but the other one looks aesthetically better. Not everybody is a professional artist who cares about that level of continuity and consistency, it’s their art and they’re allowed to draw it however they want. You can’t tell someone how to draw
Yeah but different styles allow more freedom to break the rules, especially if its heavily stylized like cartoons which prioritize shape design more so than anatomical accuracy. For most styles its important to maintain consistency in how anatomy, color and texture is presented. So there's no excuse for not learning proper anatomy in various perspectives, especially if you're drawing in an anime style which are generally very consistent.
yknow I was racking my brain before over what makes something stylized and what makes something anatomically accurate. This video really clears things up
The light in my characters eyes changes to fit the mood of the scene. My art style is slightly cartoony and I don’t draw my noses 3d looking, I mostly draw animals and dragons so I don’t have practice on humans due to what I enjoy drawing.
I like how this video also includes the various ways artists bend those rules; the persona art tends to be very strange but like you said, they stay consistent. Instead of it coming across like they don't know facial proportions, you can clearly get a feel for that style because of its consistency. They draw ALL their characters like that, and keep it true no matter the angle.
My artstile Is a mistake itself and i am proud of it. It changes and grows. This might be a hot take but i think in Art mistakes doesn't exsist unless creator belive thay Are mistakes. (Unlike mistakes in my grammer)
one of the first bad videos ive seen from this channel, imo artistic exaggeration, deformation, and changing things from different angles to better make what you're trying to convey more readable is far, FAR more important than the subject being completely 3d-accurate.
yeah thats how heavy expression works, but it's gotta be consistent with angles. if you eat an apple it changes the shape, but the bite is still there if you rotate it 10°
@@plant_12 that’s weird because when *i* eat an apple sinners from hell drag the nearest person in a 5 meter radius into the infinite realm of excruciating terror
As i person who never drew my characters with eyes in my entire life except for the classic circle and dot eyes (thats the past btw, now i draw masks on my characters) i see this as an absolute win
If you're making these inconsistencies, it's not because you have a bad style. Rather, you just dont have one yet A lot of you are still in the learning or are at the experimenting phase
Thank you! I'm so tired of people using "its just the art style" to excuse the problems in the art. Stylized art can still have mistakes that need fixing.
I struggle on perspective mainly because i have an eye style that i have not seen many people use. Everything else stays consistent, it's just the way I style my eyes, so my perspective is off, but i am trying to figure it all out.
I feel im the only one who loves their old art, idk if its a good or bad thing. Ive never been the one to cringe at things, I always find it fun. Also I'm glad I developed a cartoony style, they may seem easy to make but world building, creating story + landscapes + animation + angles is so fun with such an art style
Trust me its completely ok bro. Look at what saitama looks like daily and when he got serious face. Also applies for goku's eyes in daily and in fight. I think its ok if u can still make it look similar, bcs even gojo face is not consistent in every arc
Right, but those are purposeful changes in style. They chose to do that. This video is meant for the people who refuse to grow and listen to criticism because "it's not wrong, it's just my artstyle" It causes them to stagnate in their art journey. For example, if an artist draws Saitama, makes a mistake, and someone points it out, the artist would either fix the mistake, or keep it in mind to prevent the same mistake in the future. They wouldn't just go "No my artstyle is supposed to have mistakes".
Completely agree.
I agree, its often not about correctness but flair.
All goes if it has the effect you want 😊
yeah like past a certain angle of head traverse/elevation i stop drawing the eye on the far side, i can't fit that many lines in such a small space and most of my characters do in fact have noses.
@@lunayen we're talking about a drawing, it was an example
Adding x to ears is an art style not a mistake
@-> KitKatbar168 the point gone straight over your head 🫠
@@scarlettefoxx5585 wym? It is a style choice a mistake is something not intended I was just correcting your example I know the point of what you were saying
Well the problem is that some people are saying these arent mistakes which clearly is
@@user-sg6ii3eo9i how?
I knew that eye in the thumbnail looked familiar. I love Ann😭
It’s not a mistake if it’s intentional. Sure that’s good perspective, but the other one looks aesthetically better. Not everybody is a professional artist who cares about that level of continuity and consistency, it’s their art and they’re allowed to draw it however they want. You can’t tell someone how to draw
well if you like drawing peppa pig perspective this is not advice for you
I first watched this on mute and thought the video was about making eyes more circular
This makes a lot of sense. Thank you.
You're welcome!
My art style changes every drawing
People will say they exaggerate a certain proportion stylistically, but then it's inconsistent throughout their art.
F🦋CK PERSPECTIVE.
The fact that I recognized it was a Persona Character from an out of context eye is crazy
I don't have a specific art style. Its CONSTANTLY changing because of natural inspiration
My artstyle is inconsitances
Jokes on you, my artstyle isn't bound by puny confines such as "consistency" so I do what I want
Okay but like Tanjiro needs to drop the eyeliner tutorial fr 💳💥💳💥💳💥💳💥💳💥
Unless "Ignoring perspective" is VERY intentional throughout the entire show, in which case, holy crap that would look trippy
Cant i just draw what i want 😭
Not to be mean but don't listen to this guy just do what you want have fun with it😊
Not to be mean but this is for the people who want to improve their art, be better at drawing and need guidance on what to do
Or learn how things should be done and then change it.
Jojo changed art styles so fast between parts, its genuinely noticeable
Ah, consistency. My nemesis!
one of the first bad videos ive seen from this channel, imo artistic exaggeration, deformation, and changing things from different angles to better make what you're trying to convey more readable is far, FAR more important than the subject being completely 3d-accurate.
This one certainly is an opinion
My art style is changing my art style every new drawing ‼️
Artists whose art style changes every month: 🗿🍷
Not him showing a disproportionate, goofy looking, Persona character after all those anatomical advices he gave for drawing head accuratrlt
As much as he is correct, this is so "ERM.. actually.. 🤓🤓"
“Now we change the angle-“
“Tatamaki: AWHOOP, JUMPSCARE”
Not me changing my art style every time i draw a crater
why do you draw craters? they go under asteroids not on a digital painting
@@VilactDoesntSayShitYourselfNow what? I draw craters on paper and digital
Do you prefer drawing moon craters, or craters on Mars? Perhaps other planets too?
@kyubeyo I like to draw a vampires wolf or experiments but sometimes I draw people from different planets
artstyle is just someone being lazy in 90% of contexts
Hmmm nah, my eyes are always different because it helps with making unique expressions :3
Dude, you draw circle people with dots for eyes. I'd be surprised if you fuck that up.
@@VanillaTried you clearly only look at my thumbnails, also why you stalking my yt channel. Creepy much? 🤢
yeah thats how heavy expression works, but it's gotta be consistent with angles. if you eat an apple it changes the shape, but the bite is still there if you rotate it 10°
@@plant_12 that’s weird because when *i* eat an apple sinners from hell drag the nearest person in a 5 meter radius into the infinite realm of excruciating terror
That’s why I say I don’t have an “art style” because I’m so inconsistent😭
I wish I could learn to draw, sketch and paint every artstyle out there.
Sweet Christ that model made me physically jump, that *thing* genuinely startled me. I don’t think I’ll be sleeping for a while 😭
Good vedio but mate not everyones art style is consistent and art is art no need to tell some one off :)
It's always the beginners lmao
@@VanillaTriedmate i havent posted on yt in AWHILE💀 i aint a beginner
ok but the 3d model has got me cracking up 😭😭
Ngl that little detail gave me an idea for a doppelganger or shape shifter character that can only be detected by these little details.
As i person who never drew my characters with eyes in my entire life except for the classic circle and dot eyes (thats the past btw, now i draw masks on my characters) i see this as an absolute win
Always love explanations of simple queries for an answer
Now I understand all! Thanks for the explanation.
Perspective seem to kill me the most in art class back in high school.
If you're making these inconsistencies, it's not because you have a bad style. Rather, you just dont have one yet
A lot of you are still in the learning or are at the experimenting phase
I have a certain artstyle for bodies and heads but with the eyes I use a different art style for each character it gives them more personality
I knew I recognized that eye! Ann!
Ofc you can! Style affects perspective as well :^D
I dig the brush texture. I gotta take inspiration off of this
THE MODEL IN THE SECOND VIEW MADE ME GIGGLE
This is very true, and I find this to be pretty Important
this guy has never read snoopy 💀
The Baba Is You art style is peak art
"drawing something in a certain way"
Yes that's the art style.
Each artist is unique in that aspect.
Thank you! I'm so tired of people using "its just the art style" to excuse the problems in the art. Stylized art can still have mistakes that need fixing.
Drawing eyebrows eyelashes and hair is my escape from this at this point 😭
I struggle on perspective mainly because i have an eye style that i have not seen many people use. Everything else stays consistent, it's just the way I style my eyes, so my perspective is off, but i am trying to figure it all out.
have you seen art from ancient Egypt? they depict people in profile with both eyes being visible, and it's not a mistake at all
“Tanjiro with eyeliner doesn’t exist,he can’t hurt you”
Tanjiro with eyeliner:
Question: If a style grows and develops over time, and somebody redraws an improved piece, would that count as a mistake according to this advice?
If your art style changes then just be consistent with those changes . Then it wouldn't come across as a mistake .
I NEVER have a consistent art style.
My style changes every single time I draw- I’m constantly experimenting with eye styles, levels of detail, mouths, etc. :’V
“My art style is an alternate form of perspective from which any angle of anything I draw looks like chuuya nakahara”
