  • Suminagashi is the traditional Japanese art of marbling, and here I'm trying to make it as accessible as possible by using the bare minimum of items. This way, you can easily follow along at home!
    In the video, I demonstrate how to get started with this type of paper marbling, and I also run through some problems you may encounter and tell you how you can try to fix them.
    I hope you enjoy the video and have fun giving it a go yourself :)
    P.S. The ink I used was Manuscript Calligraphy Dip Pen Ink in black.

    the "whiskers" is actually how Spanish Wave marbling is done, you wiggle the paper side to side as you place it down on the water. Suminagashi is actually how i practiced the technique before trying it on marbled papers.

    How do you dry the paper without it all wrinkling up? I would like to make my own to use as end-papers in my own diy books. Thank you.

      Hi! I carefully iron them on low heat after they have dried :)

    • @fakiirification
      @fakiirification 3 роки тому

      i stick my papers on my glass shower door after i rinse them. on the back, of course. The surface tension of the water is enough to hold them in place until they are almost dry, at which point i let them fall off naturally, then add to a stack between boards and a weight. blotter paper between each printed sheet just to make sure. let the results of a session sit under weight over night and you should have fairly flat paper with some slight waveiness. I often use marbled papers i make like this as endpapers and even covers for my books.

    Dans bcp de tuto on parle de mettre de agent mouillant , il faut le mettre a quel moment ?
    Une fois que le papier est plein dancre il suffit de le laisser secher ?

    Is there better water solutions? My prints aren’t as vibrant in color, maybe that’s because of the paper?

    • @RokoleeDIY
      @RokoleeDIY  Рік тому

      Not sure without seeing the paper, and unfortunately they differ slightly between brands. Perhaps your paper is not as porous/absorbent?

    • @RokoleeDIY

    interesting how you dont want distortion of the rings and you want it perfectly concentric. wouldnt it be cool to mess it up and marble it rather than just have circles?

    • @RokoleeDIY

      Yeah true you could definitely do that...I just like the concentric circles as they look like the rings of a tree :)

    Do you have a written list of the materials you are using. I am a French speaker and do not fully understand the names of some products you are using.

    • @RokoleeDIY
      @RokoleeDIY  Місяць тому

      Sure!
      - Plain paper (rice, cotton, watercolour, construction or Kraft paper are best). It needs to be thick enough to not disintegrate in the water, and must be unsized and uncoated - don't use 'acid-free' paper.
      - Brushes with fine pointed tips - I used calligraphy brushes.
      - Some black ink; calligraphy dip pen ink is what I used. My acrylic ink didn't work for this. Sumi ink is designed for the purpose so would be the ideal choice. It needs to float on water, although 'Photo-Flo' is something you can add to your ink (just a drop) to help it float, but I haven't tried that.
      - Plastic tray or container at least 2" deep, slightly larger than the paper you want to use.
      - Cup
      - Washing-up liquid/dish soap
      - Strips of newspaper and a cocktail stick (optional)
      - Kitchen towel/paper towel
      - Water
      :D
