I don't know about any other country, but crosswalk buttons aren't about changing lights. They are able putting up the "Stop/go" symbols and keeping cars from turning so you can cross safely. Not about causing lights to go red, with the exception of light controlled pedestrian crossings.
Goabnb94 I live in LA and I walk home after school everyday. If I press the button, the symbol changed to walk and I have 30 seconds to walk. Without pressing, the symbol says stop and there is only 5 seconds.
In smaller cities and lower, crosswalk buttons usually work. But in huge cities like new york they are pointless due to the mass amount of people. Were I live (small city) you definitely have to press the button or you'll be waiting forever, I've tested.
In Sweden these buttons really always have an effect. Swedish companies make crosswalk modules for Finland and Norway also. I speak from my own experience.
To answer the elevator buttons: Depends on the manufacturer. Schindler's do not work, or some might close barely faster if you wait for the up/down chime to play through. If they do work, it's usually because it was left in "Firefighter" mode. Otis: Generally do work. Dover/ThyssenKrupp: They do work, but after the up/down chime. Much more difference than Schindler's KONE: Generally do work. There's exceptions where they are disabled, or in Schindler's case, legitimately work (more so in newer installs).
in my experience, elevator door close buttons, shorten the wait time, if a floor is selected, the full 3 to 5 seconds passes before the door closes by itself, when i press the button imediately after entering the moment it opens, the door closes after no more than 2 seconds, and this was consistent, the doors close slightly sooner if there are any floors selected in the car, vs their full time if none is selected
Thank you for this topic. It's refreshing to hear somebody say this out loud. I have *never* believed in the "Push to walk" buttons. I first noticed them in our downtown area when I was a kid growing up back in the [decade redacted]. Unfortunately for my placebo effect, someone had previously mentioned to me about how traffic controllers synchronized lights to streamline traffic. So after watching impatient pedestrians pushing the button two, three... six times before the light changed, I just nodded knowingly and figured: "uh huh, thought so." But no one has ever confirmed it for me before.
In some places, it's a placebo. In my country, it works depending on when is the last time it's pressed. If no one had crossed the street for a long period, the light would change immediately. But if we press it when a lot of people crossing the street,it would have a buffering time (I don't know what people would call it) before it can be used again.
Interesting how some crosswalk buttons in my hometown are placebo buttons, some crosswalks don't even have buttons but some require you to press the button before the "walk" light even comes on.
Yeah, in the Netherlands more and more traffic lights are enhanced with sensors. I sometimes don't even have to change to push the button because the traffic light already knew was coming.
The ones where I live work. #1 I have seen them broken and they have wires connected to them. If they don't then there would be no point. #2 The ones I use regularly never work unless I do press it. I'm tested it hundreds of times on my way to work On top of the fact the little white man never shows up unless I press the button and if I don't press it before the light turns red the little white man never shows up. Also I have 3 times LESS time to cross. So much so The light turns green before I even get half way across the cross walk. #3 50-60% of the time it singles to walk right when I press it. I've noticed it runs on a timer depending on how long the light is red in regards of when I press the button.
The crosswalk buttons working depends where you are. Near a local kids school the buttons work in real time and all lights go red so that children can safely cross. Near a mall the button only tells the light that a pedestrian is near by and to prolong the green light and cross sign which without the button would only last as long as a motor vehicle is detected via the wires embedded in the road near an intersection. Then of course the featured city where it is too chaotic and automates all signals.
I was just talking with my manager about this yesterday, the usual AC can be set to 69 or 70. It does not mean the air coming out is at that specific temperature, that's just a cut off temp. I told him that is just a placebo effect on everyone that does not know that ACs are usually pumping at 55 all the time...
Most elevator I use need the close button to be held for a second or two. But they really work because if you don't press it you'll wait for 5-10 seconds.
I've seen some elevator close door buttons work. I even tried it out. I got on an elevator and pressed the button for another floor. The door stayed open 9 seconds. I got on the same elevator and did the same except right after pressing the button for a floor, I pressed the close door button. The door closed in 4 seconds instead of 9. Probably the Disability act requiring the doors to remain open for a set time. The button can close the door, but an internal timer has to go off before the close door button signal is acted upon.
Most elevators now have, or are at least supposed to have, a minimum and maximum time the door will remain open. Pushing the door close button, or a floor button, will often close the door once the minimum time has passed. However, usually if you push the button before the minimum and do not press it again, the door will stay open for the maximum time. In the building where I work if you wait just long enough after the elevator door has opened, about 3 seconds, before pressing the button for the floor you want the door will immediately close. If you push the button right away after entering the elevator the door will remain open for about 10 seconds, unless you push the button again after the minimum.
the close door button always works if you have already been holding the door open for a while. (helped a lot of friends move in and out of apartment buildings)
Insects are pretty intelligent (in that they process a lot of sensory data and communicate that processed information to one another), but we've never seen any research indicating that insects are capable of learning human languages, including codes like Morse code.
In my town they work. The walk light doesn't come on unless you push it. We also have the ones that beep and say walk when it's time to go. Sometimes when it's already a green light it goes to walk RIGHT when you push it. And I was at a hotel where the AC Forsure worked. You could see the vent rotate when you turned it on and you could feel the fan blowing as well
I've got one for you. why does it feel so good to fall into a blank stare. sometimes I will look at something and it goes just slightly out of focus. I feel like my blood pressure is instantly dropping, and I feel so at ease. what causes this? why does it feel so good and relaxing. How come I can always get one started by looking into a chain link fence? I want to know. can I request Lauren as the host for this one. she makes me feel happy too!😉
Crosswalk buttons 100% definitely work there are locations where the crosswalk buttons don't work because of the fact that they're on a timer system but there are places where they definitely do work so it just depends I always pressed it just to be safe
I've heard from allot of sources that the like and dislike buttons on videos just make the numbers change and does nothing in the algorithm. It's only the amount of views and the type of views that matter
Here in Toronto, pushing a crosswalk button doesn't do much on main streets. However, pushing and holding the crosswalk buttons significantly speed up the wait times. Granted, I've only tested this around my neighbourhood.
What I've noticed is that almost always, hotel elevators have placebo buttons. But on cruise ships, the close door buttons ACTUALLY WORK. And that is the ONLY place I have ever experienced a close door button working. (I think it has something to do with international maritime laws and all that garb). Why am I only seeing this channel now? Why is the last video two years ago..? That's why I hate UA-cam. The huge guys have it taken over it's hard to see anyone else
I knew elevator Close Door buttons don't work when I did a little experiment comparing the time it took to close the door when I press the button vs when I don't press it.
Traffic buttons make sense because it's a right of way if you don't press it then intersection won't let you cross as a pedestrian allowing faster flow to traffic as the driver can just turn with out giving way.
I'm from mesa, as and we have john McCain cross walk buttons with blind sound signals. you don't push it, you're going to wait a long time to cross the street.
There's a few crossings around here that are totally silent but have a little knob underneath that spins when the lights go green. Same sort of accessibility reason, but less annoying at 2AM in a residential area I guess. Look for Tom Scott's video "The secret button on pedestrian crossings". Works well!
THE LIGHT FOR CROSSING DOES NOT GO GREEN AND IF YOU PRESS IT THE LIGHT GOES ON FOR YOU TO CROSS IF YOU DO NOT THEN THE LIGHT FOR CROSSING NEVER GOES ON IN NEW ZEALAND
They installed buttons recently on our street and they do absolutely nothing. However elevator "close" buttons are disappearing one by one. They did work when elevators were less automatic but now doors close as soon as there is nothing at the door (and there are no buttons).
The buttons do work here, if you don't press them the light doesn't ever change to walk. As for the close door buttons yes they do work too, depending on the elevator.
I can tell you in Vegas the Close Door button of the elevators in Excalibur do nothing at all. I tried the first few times that I stood there waiting for nobody and then gave up. It had to be longer than five seconds it sat there and the button did nothing. A couple of times it would open after closing halfway and one of the other passengers would jab that thing like there was zombies running for the door and still it would hang open for an eternity before finally (on it's own) closing.
In smaller, private buildings, they're usually enabled. Mine is at work. I shocked people who had been there a long time. It stays open forever if you don't. Just try it.
The most fucken anyoing thing about cross walk in Traffic light, it his green for 5 to 10 minutes on the default road, you press the button and the cross walk does not turn on, and if you don't press when the default light his on red, you stuck waiting another 5 to 10 minutes on green, and sometimes when you press the button on red, it turn green and the crossing light for pedestrian does not turn on, even if the blinking left arrow wears off, if you walk on the left.
I've had people tell me "close door" buttons on elevators don't do anything and I tell them they are stupid and should stfu when they don't have any idea what they are talking about. Ever been in an old folk"s home? They have the elevator doors programmed to stay open forever because they are imagining skeletor and the crypt keeper inching on with their canes and walkers. I learned quick you have to hit the button and the doors will try to close immediately, otherwise you sit and wait for eternity.
Meh I don't seem to see many placebo buttons. Some crosswalks will only show the little walking dude if the button is pushed otherwise they only have the lights for cars. as for elevators. :P Sometimes I just fool around and press the open and close buttons over and over until I get bored. They seem to work fine.
Well, most elevators have doors open for longer than 3 seconds. I have even seen one that held its doors open for 15 seconds, unless you pressed the button
I've always assumed the crosswalk buttons don't do anything. Why would you stop heavy traffic to let 1 person cross just because they don't want to wait for the signal?
By me crosswalk buttons dont work. Its hust a placebo effect. They changed the lights at one intersection and put buttons with a countdown timer but it doesnt change the light. It just says wait repeatedly and eventually a countdown
Hehehe. I've suspected this for a long time, I've stopped using the buttons at lights and looked for a better cross point for many years now. There's one particular crossing with buttons at the bottom of my street which I've written to the council and my MP about as it's dangerous because the computer controlled traffic at CAPITA will often stop on one side of this extremely busy road but not another, and it is on a bend where a driver turning left would not see a person walk out. But to my surprise no one has been killed there yet, I guess our evolutionary sense of danger really does work.
If the button wasn't there, I wouldn't know there was a walk signal to look for! I'm visually impaired, so if I try really hard, I can usually see the walk signal (only by color of the light not the shape), but I hate standing somewhere for minutes on end trying to locate something that isn't there! I'd probably end up not waiting because I didn't know there was a walk signal to wait for. And blind girl plus moving vehicles does not equal happy!
i got a question, why is there blood by my poo when i used the bathroom im thinking it's mh period or puberty cause i am only 10 and puberty bits at that time also they said harrmoids dont hit younger kids plys colon cancer js rare and jts onky there if it hurts. k think simply because theres something called a rear cut basically a small cut letting it kyt theres such thing as that in that body part besides its burns and feels like thees a cut there anyway. im glad that rear cuts heal quick and mostly dont heed surgury also if i have herrmoids they say drink lots kf water now i love water so thats even better!
It's probably just a cut or a small cyst or a symptom of stress, but if the bleeding continues, definitely talk to your parent/guardian about it and see whether they can take you to a doctor. Any time that a wound doesn't heal and keeps bleeding (especially an internal wound), you should get it checked out by a professional just to be sure that everything's OK
+BrainStuff - HowStuffWorks well i just went back and ther3 was no blood so the skin there is probally starting tp grow, then again i neem playing pretty rough lately maybe it just hurts alot but i should be okay
Question: "Do the buttons do anything?"
Video answer: "Maybe, maybe not."
So basically I'm right where I was before watching the video.

Even though I knew that they didn't do anything, I pressed them because people gave me looks when I just walk up to crosswalks and didn't do anything
some work some dont, you can only know by testing it few times so if you dont know crosswalk press the button
Finger banging a crosswalk button keeps me occupied.
Spooky Delta well that sounds wrong
Yeah but it' fucking annoying when someone does it outside my house when I'm trying to sleep

the placebo effect is so awesome
Placebo buttons? Hmm..sounds like a voting booth :D
nice
but 70% of the time more than 40% of votes are counted and then 80% of the counts are actually used. Also 32% of statistics are made up on the spot.
Eric D Take it easy on the drugs, buddy.
SupaEMT134 way to not get the joke
Eric D Perhaps next time, trying telling a joke
The buttons DO work here in Finland. It will turn green right away if cars are stopped.

that crosswalk button in the thumbnail is in singapore! im kind of proud coz singapore is a small country
the close door button always works if you have already been holding the door open for a while. (helped a lot of friends move in and out of apartment buildings)
Hi i have a question, could an insect learn morse code to "communicate" with us? are they intelligent enough for this?
Insects are pretty intelligent (in that they process a lot of sensory data and communicate that processed information to one another), but we've never seen any research indicating that insects are capable of learning human languages, including codes like Morse code.
BrainStuff - HowStuffWorks the real question is, in the buttons that work, does pressing it multiple times make it change faster
dan b duhh everyone knows that
Nah it just wastes your time so its just another placebo effect
In Japan all the buttons work well over the majority of the time, however I notice when i'm in America many of these buttons are placebo's.
lol the traffic light button in Singapore. Recognised it immediately haha!

What is the name of classical music piece played in the title sequence of these "Brain Stuff" videos?
The intro music is from Bach's St. Matthew Passion, Part Two: ua-cam.com/video/YAox7O4o9vc/v-deo.htmlm35s
Thanks!
Where I live the pedestrian system switches off after a crossing, and then the button turns it on again, so cars aren't stopped for no reason
I've noticed crosswalk buttons work at 2am but they never shorten the light. Sometimes though the walk signal won't turn on if I don't press it.
I want to know.
can I request Lauren as the host for this one.
she makes me feel happy too!😉
What's your beef with Josh? Are you jealous of his full head of hair, or is he jealous of your beard?
lol
Crosswalk buttons 100% definitely work there are locations where the crosswalk buttons don't work because of the fact that they're on a timer system but there are places where they definitely do work so it just depends I always pressed it just to be safe
Physically speaking always. The button does physically move.
I pressed the like button. Does it do anything? :)
OMG good question!
It makes a number go bigger.
The dislike button on the comments seems to do nothing.
I've heard from allot of sources that the like and dislike buttons on videos just make the numbers change and does nothing in the algorithm. It's only the amount of views and the type of views that matter
However, I'm not an expert and that's just second hand knowledge
Here in Toronto, pushing a crosswalk button doesn't do much on main streets. However, pushing and holding the crosswalk buttons significantly speed up the wait times. Granted, I've only tested this around my neighbourhood.

placebo thermostats, well try that in a hot tropical country and its world war 3 in the office
It's not that there's no air conditioning/heat in those offices! The AC/heat works, but the thermostats on the walls don't control it.
The elevator close door buttons at my work, a hospital, definitely work.
Why am I only seeing this channel now? Why is the last video two years ago..? That's why I hate UA-cam. The huge guys have it taken over it's hard to see anyone else
Kinda like the agency you get in video games
I knew elevator Close Door buttons don't work when I did a little experiment comparing the time it took to close the door when I press the button vs when I don't press it.
Jason Khoo they work where I live
not all elevators are made the same i guess.

the close door buttons on the elevator at my college work. the doors wont shut unless you hit the button.
Does pressing like to this video actually do anything?
THE LIGHT FOR CROSSING DOES NOT GO GREEN AND IF YOU PRESS IT THE LIGHT GOES ON FOR YOU TO CROSS IF YOU DO NOT THEN THE LIGHT FOR CROSSING NEVER GOES ON IN NEW ZEALAND
They installed buttons recently on our street and they do absolutely nothing. However elevator "close" buttons are disappearing one by one. They did work when elevators were less automatic but now doors close as soon as there is nothing at the door (and there are no buttons).
Who uses the crosswalk anymore? Jay walking when there is a sufficient gap between cars is what everyone in my town does!
The buttons do work here, if you don't press them the light doesn't ever change to walk.
As for the close door buttons yes they do work too, depending on the elevator.
I always suspected that crosswalk buttons were useless but not close door one .

I know one that ALWAYS works it's situated near a school it's in London in front of the south tottenham overground station
Boss-installs fake thermostat.
Employee- hey Mike, I turned the heat up two weeks ago, and my nuts are still frozen😂😂
And all my life I believed the closing button from elevators does work. No more lies XD
For me the elevator buttons do work, makes dor close faster. But with crosswalks has no effect
Since I am a kid I always thought that the button made the red knight longer
Light
where I live (Latvia) they always work. 70% of the time it's instant.
In smaller, private buildings, they're usually enabled. Mine is at work. I shocked people who had been there a long time. It stays open forever if you don't. Just try it.
I live in Korea, and I'm pretty sure 99.9% of the close buttons do function, as I can close them as soon as they're opened. XD
I would always spam the button
The crosswalk button would sometimes have a duck noise
I'll keep pressing it to hear the duck.
it Does not work some place but it works in the city
on theory number 1, I actually round up and add 10%. So if I see $29.99, I count it as $30 and add it to my budget as $33.
Ryan Cavitt wrong video?
It must've been. I just watched the video he's talking about, though. So his comment is relevant to one person at least
How do I know that the thumbs up button isn't just a placebo button?
it is a placebo button it doesn't do anything
you have beef with Josh Clark, eh?
The elevator buttons do work
I think I've only encountered a working crosswalk button once. Then again it could have easily been good timing.
The ones in my town do clearly work
I'm pretty sure the ones on my university campus work as it was built in the last few years
-c+ student
I suppose it depends on country, maybe in USA the buttons don't work but it is very obvious that they do work where i live.

Crosswalk buttons do work, what doesn't work is hitting the damn thing repeatedly.
elevator buttons do function. a door close button in an elevator at Stoneridge mall does not work on the way up, but does on the way down.
Well, elevator buttons work but those crosswalk ones.. Hmm!
That is the funniest title
In Oregon you have to push the buttons to activate the walking signals
Ok I will never push a ">|

Did he even answer the question?
Yes. The answer is "sometimes".
Mitsubishi elevators ftw!
I feel sorry for those who can't wait for 3 seconds for the elevator door to close.
Well, most elevators have doors open for longer than 3 seconds. I have even seen one that held its doors open for 15 seconds, unless you pressed the button
You've clearly not been chased by unknowable horrors and had to use an elevator to escape while it rushes down the corridor towards you :P
Why do the wheels of cars sometimes look like they spin backwards?
Rollin' Shutter Effect.
Crosswalk buttons do work here.
I've always assumed the crosswalk buttons don't do anything. Why would you stop heavy traffic to let 1 person cross just because they don't want to wait for the signal?
the close elevator door in my building might just be disconnected.
Came here after 'Because Science: Footnotes' Nov 05, 2019.

Do they not have the clicking sound on the walk lights where you live? I know they're not everywhere yet -- thought they should be.
None in my town, but I'm moving soon and there are a few there! I'm so excited!
I never use crosswalk buttons. They're unnecessary and it's just easier to go when the cars stop
theres a code to make crosswalk buttons work
i got a question, why is there blood by my poo when i used the bathroom im thinking it's mh period or puberty cause i am only 10 and puberty bits at that time also they said harrmoids dont hit younger kids plys colon cancer js rare and jts onky there if it hurts. k think simply because theres something called a rear cut basically a small cut letting it kyt theres such thing as that in that body part besides its burns and feels like thees a cut there anyway. im glad that rear cuts heal quick and mostly dont heed surgury also if i have herrmoids they say drink lots kf water now i love water so thats even better!
