  • We dedicate this video in memory of Dr. Samantha Pohl, 1985 - 2015:
Many people assume chicken products in US supermarkets come from chickens raised in crowded cages on “factory farms." But that’s not true, says Dr. Chuck Hofacre of the University of Georgia, one of the nation’s top poultry veterinarians. The typical US chicken farm is a family farm consisting of just a few barns, where the animals are free to roam widely across open ground. In this episode of Vets On Call, Dr. Hofacre performs a flock check at a typical chicken farm, accompanied by veterinarian Dr. Samantha Pohl and other graduate students from the University of Georgia College of Veterinary Medicine.
Veterinarians On Call is presented by Zoetis and features vets on the job and their clients across the U.S. who volunteered to be filmed. Those appearing were not compensated to participate and the opinions expressed are theirs.

Hmm... While the conditions did not appear overly cramped, having so many chickens indoors means that they are fed antibiotics in their water to keep any potential diseases at bay. The problem with this is that it is contributing to antibiotic resistance, which is becoming a major issue worldwide. There have been cases of antibiotic resistant Salmonella appearing now (which is caught from eating undercooked chicken) which is kind of scary because this isn't an uncommon disease and in some cases even our last-line antibiotics are no longer working.
The question is, is the cost of using antibiotics to enable such a high population (they said 15,000 birds in each shed) of birds in an enclosed space worth the price that we are now paying for doing so?
I do get that this video is only aimed at the chickens that are raised for eating and that they are not in any way trying to say that caging the laying hens is in any way humane or that it doesn't happen.

I did feel alot better after watching this. What percentage of farms are set up this way? Are all egg laying chickens in a 'cage system'? if not what percentage?

I would not call windowless, crowded warehouses "humane." This is nothing more than propaganda by the meat industry. Farmers are generally not allowed to let filmakers film inside of a chicken house without express permission of the company the chickens themselves are owned by. These birds were not adult birds, they were young birds designed to grow too quickly. They are put on anti-biotic filled feed to make them grow faster, increasing the chance that any salmonella and similar diseases will become anti-biotic resistant. Chicken farmers see very limited profit because they do not own the birds, but are required to buy and maintain equipment, feed, and other supplies to raise these animals. The birds are owned by the parent company, not the growers, who only see a small percent of the profits earned when the chickens go to market. Chickens are intelligent, social animals who will become stressed, feather pluck, and fight amongst one another when kept in cramped conditions, especially when they lack stimulation.
While animal rights groups often present images of abused chickens as examples of standard care, this is likely incorrect. However, it is impossible to maintain a system of food production that feeds hundreds of millions of people a common (cheap, even) food item whilst keeping humane standards. The reason why the industry has been scrutinized by animal rights groups is multi-faceted, including sexing and inspection of chicks, growth practices that compromise human health, living conditions on poorly regulated farms, transport conditions, and slaughter conditions.
Still, broiler chickens have it better than caged egg-laying hens.

I completely agree! That's why I'm vegetarian. These birds never even get to see sunlight and it's so sad. It really disappoints me when I see Vets on Call post videos like this one, ones that minimize the cruelty of the meat industry. So sad :(

THAT'S how family farms have always been? So you admit that family farms have always been this horrible.
"Activists groups mislead" .... while you show video footage that SHOWS the problems! Animals trapped in buildings, with no enrichment, existing simply so that humans can exploit them for their flesh. You really think this looks fine?
"These animals live better than many humans"
How many humans have you seen locked in sheds as "products" for others' consumption? How many times have you seen people flipping human infants over and feeling their muscles and talking about good "food" quality of their muscle tissue?
Please tell me where these human infant sheds are located so I can call the police, please.
Who is taking advantage of the naivety of consumers here? You're the people convincing them that slavery and killing for pleasure is "humane".
The animals and farmers in the video footage people expose are not "actors" nor CGI, they are real farms and real animals. Animals are ACTUALLY confined. They are actually mutilated, exploited, violently handled, and killed. It isn't a lie. But please, do share some video footage on how you "humanely" extract flesh from a chicken without harming her. I'm very interested in seeing how this is done.

Boycott meat and eggs produced by factory farms. Only purchase antibiotic-free and free-range raised, poultry products.

Please don't purchase "free-range" (shed-packed) products of extreme violence. Live vegan! "Free-range" and "humane" is a lie. Having a "better life" doesn't make animals more willing to have that life stolen from them. It is all unnecessary harm.
