@@SanctusApologetics can't wait. I'm going to tell some people at church to check out your channel because we don't focus on the early church fathers too much and you help fill in that gap
It is unlikely, regardless of what a pious Church father said, that Poliycarp met John the Apostle. He never made the claim, nor was it found in any of his letters. It get worst, there is no evidence, and it is unlikely that any disciple was alive when Polycarp was a boy. If I want to prop up my credentials as a physicist, I would make a claim that my teacher was someone who was an Albert Einstein student. What we have is writings in the 180s and beyond. This is beyond hearsay and, in my opinion, most likely not true. This kind of twisting of history and manipulation of data brought us the Reformation and Enlightment. It seems to me that people were making stuff up left and right.
Given that John died around 100 AD, they would've had plenty of time to know John. AND The writings of iraeneus weren't meant to elevate his status. He's just recording what he was taught as a student.

Irenaeus makes it sound like Matthew's gospel was written before Mark. That would shake up quite a few things in the academic world
Some scholars believe he got his information on matthews gospel from papias , who says soemthing similar

Except for the very people who literally followed him are the people who made the claim he knew John.
Who?
@@prrboricua the person that knew polycarp?
