I would coat it with beeswax! I usually just leave everything natural with no paint. I like the hives from hooverhives (Everything is dipped inn beeswax); Not sure this is helpful to you a year later but just saw your comment!
Great video. Hi from Belarus bee's forests! I have a question about the color of hives. Some hives are the natural wood color and some are painted white. Is there and advantage to painting a have white?

What about the landing board area of the bottom board? It's highly exposed to the elements yet the bees obviously land on it too enter the hive.

From what I've read it's best to use bright colors but we have a second hive set up now that is just the white primer and we've seen no difference.
Also before painting i seal up where the sides join. If not a perfect fit i used Dap to seal up the joins my 2 cents worth

I read that you can paint it all for protection. Needs to be well protected.
