When I think of rally, the thought of two wheels doesn’t come to mind. But I had the time of my life at Utah’s salt flats doing huge drifts and smooth corners
@@sarahdell4042 They kind of are. 220-230kg or thereabouts and tall enough that I have to slide my butt over to one side to get a secure footing. But it's the same with any other tall bike really. The butt slide makes it possible to ride quite tall bikes if you're good at it. And once your riding it's no different to any other bike. Picking it up isn't too bad either, but as with any big bike not dropping it in the first place does preserve your stamina. Staying on two (or one lol) wheel is more fun anyways
It might not be the fastest time that this machine can do but sliding it around like that makes it look super fast. Also it adds a lot of style and spectators love that.
I own the same bike and they are beastly machines. They are surprising very good for riding off road. They are so much fun to own. A real street legal race bike.
@@daneharrison3426 ughh, that sucks. I’m sorry to hear that. I have broken my collar bone. Horribly painful. When people speak about breaking their collar bone I can feel a pain where I broke mine. I hope he made a full recovery. It’s awful.
It was literally a Dakar-winning race bike, to which they added some licence plates. It’ll do 80mph over *anything* for miles. Under the bodywork, it’s basically a 100bhp motocross bike. Any motorcycle will lose time in corners over a car, however.
I have a (rather weird) idea for a Will It Rally episode- can you get a racing hovercraft out there? They look like a blast to drive (ride? pilot?) and I wonder how they would do on a bumpy twisty dirt road... Edit: It would probably get a similar time on snow/ice versus dirt/gravel, seeing as it doesn't rely on grip like a car does. The more I think about it, the more interesting it becomes.
Just Bought a 950 Adventure the day this video released, figured it was a good fit to pair with the STI in the garage... both of those choices I can link to this channel now.
It is funny you noted the wideness and it is very wide compared to a dirtbike or dual sport. However, Ii is about the narrowest multi-cylinder adventure bike that you can get :P
Good bike the 990, Owned one and did south africa with it, then did the GS throphy on my gs850 in 2018 and it wasn't as good on that rally, looking at the ktm 890 adv R now.
You've got to be pretty careful with KTM marketing... You can only run single cylinder bikes in the Dakar, KTM has had huge success with the 450 and 690 but never entered a 990 There are probably some rallies you can enter a 990, but Dakar definitely isn't one of them Some races have a "heavy enduro" class you could enter it in, like the Baja
@@Teamoneilrally you guys are pretty wrong for being such a "rally enthusiasts" source. Twin cylinder bikes were banned from the Dakar until 2005, before that the 990 was the absolute king of the rally (there are even videos of this here on yt). After that the rally was ruled by the 690 but due to the Japanese manufacturers pressure the limit was reduced even more to 450cc single cylinder, rule which became active in 2011, so yeah go figure.
Here's a link with all the Dakar winners ever, scroll down and you can even see all the podium bike finishes (1st, 2nd, and 3rd for every year). You will see zero KTM 990s. Sticking out a foot like that at high speeds in corners, there is a risk for it to be kicked between the rear wheel and the seat. Look at what happens at 6:20, now add a little more speed and voilà :(
Hey team o’Neil! I want to start rally racing but don’t know stick too well. Should I buy a car to practice one like a Miata? Or buy a Subaru to learn and then just beat on the clutch and rebuild once I get the hang of it to race? Thank you so much!!

I would really like Wyatt and/or Tim tear down what went wrong for those people. Why'd they suddenly transition mid-corner, why did their line go wrong, why did they snap oversteer and such.

In a car, you sometimes hit the limit.
On a bike, the limit hits you.
When you get some good snow out there, you gotta get a snowmobile on the track.

Of course it will rally, that bike was born on the longest, toughest rally of them all, the Dakar. And because Fabrizio Meoni.
Thanks for the Moto segment. It was great. A flat track bike set up for TT would have ruled. Have JD Beach bring his Yamaha.
Yessss that would be amazing
