I moved to las vegas in 1995. went to see this show and fell in love with it. I lost count of how many times I went to the show. I knew every dance move, every word. The only row in the theater I would sit is was R so that they would skate right in front of me and during the finale they would line up in front of the R row and do the medley. Hell I even had my license plate personalized to say "GORUSTY". I was so pissed when this show ended I never went back to the Hilton. I still play the songs on Spotify.
It's pretty funny to see all these comments belittling this show when in actuality it's one of the most popular, long-running shows ever and has made HUGE money. Yes, it's a specific taste that not everyone will like, but acting like it's factually bad is just inaccurate. Millions of people have seen it and loved it or it wouldn't have survived this long.
I mean its the worlds most sucessfull musical. BY FAR! I dont think its particular more "silly" than dancing cats or a singing jesus or vampires. You either like those themed musicals or you dont. Bashing this particular musical just shows the authors ignorance.
Just because it’s made lots of money and has been seen by many doesn’t mean it’s good. Lots of people have bad taste. No one said it’s a fact that it’s bad. People are just expressing their opinions. I saw the show in London in 95, and I thought it was crap.
Whistling Starlight it’s depending where u are. I mean that kids can’t be fans, when the show isn’t played anymore, where they live, is clear. But around Bochum it’s the kids that like it the most. Xd
This IS NOT the closing night of Las Vegas Starlight. It was the last show of the '95-96 cast. The show played for another 14 months and closed in late November 1997.
I was just watching a more recent version of this and even just seconds in, you know this one is going to be so much better. For a start there's a huge difference in energy from the characters.....and if it's 96....then I hope to God there's more CB (Red Caboose). Can't believe they cut so much of him out. Thanks for uploading! I'm gonna enjoy this!
As tragic as it was, CB was removed from the show in the 1992 rewrite. The barbarians. Easily my favorite character. But you probably figured that out in the three years it's been since you commented :)
Okay to everyone who is posting mean comments. Leave it to yourself. I mean, this show is great but not everyones taste and if you don't like it then just don't watch it. It's really disrespectfull in many ways Note from me: Thanks for uploading this ♥
Christian Di Francia I do know this but to join and writing negative bullshit below videos just because "everyone" on UA-cam does that is a real sad opinion tbh, just don't watch videos you don't like or don't leave a comment that's not criticising but insulting. It may be an old line but you also wouldn't jump of a bridge only because other people do it
true. but some people enjoy this for its absurdity and revel in making fun of it. personally I haven't really looked into the negative comments, but I can tell you the only reason I watched it was because I had heard how craptastic it was
geronimo987654 there is occasionally UK Tours every 7 years now but Andrew Lloyd Webber has no plans to bring it back to the west end or bring it back to America yet. However, the show is still going strong in Bochum. They are doing their first full English show at the 28th March
They did a tour in 2013 in Utah, but they cut a lot of good stuff out. It's actually on youtube too, but with no zooms or anything ;-; ua-cam.com/video/rYi7qzdIIGY/v-deo.html
Was it just me or has Lotta Locomotion changed since the original? I thought each of the cars were introduced. Like, I remember Ashley the smoking car having that thick new york/new jersey accent and I thought it was adorable.
So many changes. Lyric changes, verse order changes, character changes (Bye bye Ashley). Then finally getting axed in favor of similarly named but very modern A Whole Lotta Locomotion.
Someone having a bad day at the office!!! Tripping over in the first number, Almost not noticeable though and fair play to him for getting up and getting on with it.
which version did you buy? there are literally dozens of versions out. The one from "The new Starlight Express" is actually 100% like the version you see here.
There were three names that were used, depending on which production it was. Nintendo was used for the Las Vegas version. I believe the London production used Hashamoto and the Broadway production used Yoshimoto.
I saw the London version and this one. You are not mistaken...EVERYTHING was lower quality in the Las Vegas version. Was very disappointed after seeing it after London. The London show was outstanding!!!
I did figure skating on roller skates for 6 years and Not trying to hate, but my 8 year old self could of done a better job at the skating. Really I was at least doing simple jumps like the waltz and mapes jumps. This is basically the choreography of a level 1 skater.
First of they are miscians and not skaters. Second I know from a documentary that the choreographer needed to invent a new way of skating. they need to learn a very specific skate style, where they are not allowed to move their arms to build momentum. They are only allowed to use their arms for choreographic reasons. That maybe the reason you, as a pro, might find the skating technique kind of odd.
It needed to be simple. You also had choreographed in falls so that it would look natural if a performer did fall. They auditioned both singers and skaters and every time the singers won out and a new cast had to learn how to roller skate and navigate the incredibly complex stage of Starlight. You get a cast of ice follies style skaters and somehow try to teach them to sing and act as well as skate in the very particular style of Starlight, and 2 years later you might have a cast. The cast of Starlight worked through bloody and blistered feet, broken bones, twisted ankles and still came back smiling for the next 13 hour rehersal.
It's a real show. I'm really getting sick of people saying shit like "Oh people paid money for this!" It's legitimately fun to see live. It's not high art. And It certainly isn't the greatest musical of all time. But it is fun.

Michael Persico the ironic thing is that it was made for kids, but basically all the fans are teenagers and adults
Whistling Starlight it’s depending where u are. I mean that kids can’t be fans, when the show isn’t played anymore, where they live, is clear. But around Bochum it’s the kids that like it the most. Xd
Marcus PD 95 isn’t the original version of it, but if u didn’t liked it, what are u doing here, I mean, why did u watched a video of it?
People keep hating on this show but at least take some appreciation for the actors who have to learn to sing, dance while on skates!

Saw this many times in Vegas! Such memories! Loved it!
Saw this one in London around '95. Great show, light effects were mind-blowing for that time! Hope for a reboot

I went to this show in Vegas and it was a great show....
Thank you very much for loading this great show on youtube!
Hope the guy who feel, was ok. They have extras/swings waiting backstage in case something happens

@@LMvonLebkuchenThen in Germany it was replaced entirely by “Ich Bin Ich” or “I am me”
I agree it was not the closing. I saw the show in Vegas in November 1996.
Pearl's costume shows a lot more skin than it does in Bochum... I mean this is Las Vegas ;)
lol
Yeah about midway through the Vegas run they gave all the female coaches showgirl "upgrades" ;)
Upgrades people, upgrades!
I remember seeing this! I was so excited.
Someone having a bad day at the office!!! Tripping over in the first number, Almost not noticeable though and fair play to him for getting up and getting on with it.
why is this version of he'll whistle at me even better than the one i bought from iTunes?
which version did you buy? there are literally dozens of versions out. The one from "The new Starlight Express" is actually 100% like the version you see here.
I have never seen this. But I have listened to some of the music.
Im in love with Dawn Marie Church - the female lead. Why isn't there more videos of her?
Kwok Man i agree. she's great
Ahh, love watching this!!
Thank you sooo much for uploading it!
Amazing thank you for posting
Was this at the las vegas hilton?
(Greaseball comes out) USA USA USA
peter griffin brought me here
Wait the actors are supposed to be toy trains? 😨 I thought by the art work they were supposed to be robots.
Nope Trains. actually. ALW tried to get the rights to Thomas The Tank Engine Characters but was denied.
The Name of the Japanese Train is Nintendo?! i think my ears are broken
Thats true, it was.
There were three names that were used, depending on which production it was. Nintendo was used for the Las Vegas version. I believe the London production used Hashamoto and the Broadway production used Yoshimoto.
@@gpturner0924 dont forget the, you know still running..., german show. Names used there were Hashamoto, Nintendo and Manga.
Winterhe4rt oh, right! That German production is on my bucket list!
@@gpturner0924 I do want to recreate this show somehow...
Oh my God... I can't believe this is an actual thing that happened... XD
this is still live in Germany. For over 30 years now...
that long time ago no one make that anymore
I wish for an English captions.
Did Mr. Rod Weber (Greaseball) have any understudies during the Las Vegas StEx?
Why does it feel like the costumes are lower quality than the London ones and bochum ones
I saw the London version and this one. You are not mistaken...EVERYTHING was lower quality in the Las Vegas version. Was very disappointed after seeing it after London. The London show was outstanding!!!
Starlight express should get an adaptation, like a book 📖, or a movie 🎥. What do you think 💭?
Seeing how movie adaptations turned out so far, definetly not. They just ruin the musical with that
the musical is inspired of the book "the little engine that could"
Minus the ramps
yes☺
are these people singing live or are they just lip-synching
Singing live
You can tell in some bits where some voices crack or they add in little ad-libs
This is late lol but they're singing live.
😦

My left ear is glad he didn't have to hear this.
What the hell is this?
starlight express?

by musically trained actors that never skated in their lives. now you being a skater, try the reverse. ;earn singing and acting and get a gig
First of they are miscians and not skaters.

And people actually paid to see this?! Paid money, not magic beans or in crappy home made coupons for hugs or some other BS instead of money.
YES!!!!!!!!
This musical is amazing you have no taste
