Long time no see, friends! I know that the video quality on this boot is a bit potato, but please keep in mind that it is not only from the late 80's (making this over 30 years old!), but was probably a copy of a copy of a low quality VHS, which resulted in a lot of generation loss. This is also, to my knowledge, probably the only complete recording of the London show before its massive rewrite...

Todd Lester is an amazing Caboose ❤❤
I wish I could’ve seen this ☹️
Thank you for the upload. I went to see this in primary school at the Apollo theatre in 1988. Gives me goosebumps still at 45 and a lovely trip down memory lane ☺️.
Not a single memorable song came out of this hot mess......
My shock when it git announced my current teacher at college was conducting this performance
Greg Mowry, the original, stayed the entire run!
The injuries were daily, it seems! So much physical activity!
damn, did they really get rid of "call me rusty" this early on??? what a shame, because so much of what you understood about his character was lost with the removal of that song :( thank you for sharing this!
I’m deffo gay-
1:26 Best part. His laugh 😂
When did they drop Whistle at Me? I'm sure it was in the version of the "New" Starlight I saw at AV in the late 90s.
45:45 the vocal cracks cute 😂
Fantastic Cast 👏🏼👏🏼👏🏼👏🏼👏🏼👏🏼👏🏼👏🏼👏🏼
What a treat this was! Both seeing the Australian tour in Melbourne, and getting to relive the memories through this video.
This looks so much better than the 2024 version in London in an old TV studio. The lighting is more atmospheric and theatrical, not TV like as it appears on the YT videos currently out there.
The troubador videos are terrible - in person it's really gorgeous. Of course the set isn't as big. If you want that, Bochum is always available. The UK has a huge premium on land and it's so ridiculously expensive to put on productions now. But I really thought the sound design and lighting design were spectacular in person.
@@onemanfran Hello Fran, I saw the original London West End Stage show, I think I saw it 4 times. It was brilliant at the London Victoria Apollo Theatre. Part of going to the theatre for me is the experience of being in a theatre, and not in an old TV studio. I wonder if a theatre was not available in the West End, otherwise, Andrew would have gone for a West End opening. I hate theatre in the round. Thank you for your excellent feedback and comment
I saw this over 20 yearsago , and it has stayed with me ever since !! - truly memorable !!! X
I have seen this show in the West End, more times than I care to count. certainly, it is the show I have seen more performances of. I work in theatre, and always knew people involved in the show, so I certainly will have seen this cast. Sadly, I can't make out who is performing here. Thank you for posting. Great memories
Saw SE very early on with Stephanie Lawrence, Michael Staniforth, PP Arnold, Lon Satton etc. Absolutely breathtaking theatre, so to see this is amazing (although by 1988 it had already been re-worked). I sat with my sister in the front row of the circle - you could feel the hydraulics raising the track barriers. The touring versions just can't capture the excitement of the races (for obvious reasons) & you miss out on that awesome piece of machinery - the bridge.
I saw this cast too - awesome 🎉
Was this too early for Greg Ellis as Rusty?
I wish for an English captions.
Upload the higher definition 1080p of Starlight Express full musical, please?
The stage is so technologically advanced for 1989 it's so amazing!
56:34 "The Red Caboose is under your bed" 😭
Amazing thank you for posting
Ah, back before they ruined it with all the awful rewrites 😭 Miss this so much 😭
Have no idea how a female greaseball is going to work but nothing is stopping me from going to see this show again. It was my adhd / autistic everything and still is to this day 40 years later
My late brother worked in wardrobe on this
It would be so nice to see the original run of 1984.
I recognize that menu in the beginning. I had that same DVD-writer/tape player in 2001. This was copied off of VHS onto DVD and then ripped from there to a computer.

Was a lotta locomotion removed at some point?
What about one for the 1984 production
I was 13 when I saw this show.....random that it popped up in my recommendations
Today, it has been twenty-two years on the dot since the original London production of Starlight Express had it's final performance. Honestly, even though I wasn't even alive yet and I was still quite young the last time the show was even in the UK, I'm glad to say that I'll be one of the younger ones to see this show this year in the new revival.
A DVD of the '84 version with Rusty Ray Shell, Pearl Stephanie Lawrence & Dinah Frances Ruffelle would be great!!! Please make one. The New Version would break my heart💔. Because I JUST PLAIN HATE IT!
Poppa having a hard time singing this show!! Ouch
My happy memories from my childhood
this is a great rcord of how the original show ran, its also a carbon copy of the Broadway version from 1987 which I had the pleasure to work for. loved watching this, lots of memories
I saw this in London on my first trip to Europe in 1997.
Since Starlight Express in London at the Apollo Victoria Theatre went under a heavy revision in November 1992, Didn't the script remain the same until closing night without any more revisions?
50:49 The "awwwww" the audience does when Dustin thinks it's his fault Poppa broke down is adorable
Un musical maravilloso, con una puesta en escena, por desgracia bastante infravalorada y si te vas fuera de su época la mayoria de gente la conoce de oidas como mucho. Necesita volver a aparecer en teatros.
So cute the Red caboose and Electra
One of my favourite shows since a kiddo. Saw this in the West End back in the 90s. And i will be re-enjoying it in Germany in October ... 35 years and the longest running musical. ❤ Rumours say it might be returning to the West End. Oh i hope so ❤
The Starlight Sequence, just wow. Greg Ellis nails it

Poor Rusty 😢
My Greaseball was Jeff Shankley, my Pearl was Stephanie Lawrence, and my C.B. was Micheal Staniforth. This was a ground breaking musical like Time was
First theatre show I saw was: Robin Hood and his Merry Men at in Kent at Orchard Theatre-was 14 months old and remember none of it lol However first one I do remember was-Snoopy the musical when I was nearly 3 + half at Duchess theatre. I remember moaning at the interval to my dad how hungry I was and then went to a Wimpy afterwards 😊 Then after that become a theatre buff, next shows I saw after that were Cats, then like you saw Starlight Express then Time! Altogether over the years I have seen Starlight Express 45 + times- 25 were in London, then others were from UK Tour like at: The National Bowl at Milton Keynes, and other tours around the world! Seen it 4 times in Germany at Starlight Express Theatre in Bochum, as you prob know been playing there since 1987 😀🚂🛼 As for Time saw it 3 times, once with Cliff Richard in 86, once with David Cassidy in 87, and once with David Ian in 1988, Such a shame it never did a tour or even a revival over the years 😔 After that would then see other shows at my local theatres in Kent like: Orchard Theatre, Churchill Theatre etc and saw plays/musicals like: Annie, Bugsy Malone, Noises Off, The 39 Steps etc...... Next shows in London I would see as a kid were, Barnum, Chess when I was 6 in Summer of 1987-so glad I got to see it with Elaine Paige-so gutted never got to see her on stage in Evita/Cats, + ABBAcadabra Have seen Chess a few times over the years with that last revival with Michael Ball in June of 2018, and then Les Miserables, Blood Brothers, + the longest running show in West End and also the world-Agatha Christie's The Mousetrap as you know 🙂 Including many, many more in 80's, 90's, 2000's, 2010's and now! Whereabouts in UK you from Kathryn, I'm in Kent as I said above, and still have all my tickets, programs/souvenir guides(some of them signed), and merch since the 80's! 😁
RIP Micheal and Steph
Saw it when at school camp in London 1986 - First dinner at Tony Roma’s in St. Martins Lane then Starlight Express at Apollo Victoria … fashinated by the moving bridge … show was marvelous and lightyears ahed of todays travelling versions
Bless This Mess. I have wanted to see this show for so many years and now I finally can.
Me too. It closed the same year I wanted to see it and I ended up seeing cats instead.
