  • This year's Palm Spring festival was certainly a bold, smart, colorful and purely pleasurable experience. From the onset, an extensive lineup of incredibly well researched and informative presentations highlighting Al Jolson's awesome ride through the history of the 20th century right through the late 1940s was fully detailed. The big event with Miss Barbara Hale was terrific! After Jan Hernstat was complimented for his extensive research on Miss Hale, Barbara noted..."Some are just as smart as pigs!"

Absolutely marvelous! From Barbara Hale's reminiscing and beaming at Tony B's fantastic singing to the rapport between Jan and Barbara, I was smiling throughout this treasured clip. God, I wish I could have been there in person with ya'll.

Please forgive me as I really don't wish to upset anyone as I realise that Tony Babino has his own army of loyal fans but I am afraid that I just don't get it. Having been a Jolie fan for over thirty years I have only ever come across two people who in my opinion have ever been able to do justice to the Jolson sound and that is Clive Baldwin and the late Norman Brooks. It's really nice to see Barbara Hale still going strong.

Amazing clip. I didn't know she was still alive. She must have been pushing 90 when this was taken.

Today my local TV channel showed "Jolson Sings Again." When I saw the original at a cinema in 1950, "political correctness" wasn't evident. I enjoyed the film then, BUT seeing it "now" the black faced singer takes on a different feeling to the viewer. Jolson did not ridicule the African race, many songs were full of empathetic stories, of lost love, homesickness, and overwork.
In today's society, a line has been drawn, and so be it. BUT Jolson as an entertainer, was superb. Thanks .
    T.B.

While not as creative or innovative as the original film, "The Jolson Story" made in 1946 starring Larry Parks and Evelyn Keyes, the sequel, "Jolson Sings Again" was credible and well done, with excellent chemistry between Parks and Hale, as a romanticized version of Jolson's last wife. Of all the Hollywood Blacklist victims, no actor's career suffered in the same manner as Parks. There are parallels with John Garfield, who died as a result of heart problems that were exacerbated by the list.
