There were so many great actors throughout the show and watched all the TV movies as well. Thanks for remembering Barbara Hale and this incredible show.

Ive recently started watching Perry Mason again after many years and im absolutely loving it. Its so nice to go back and hear something with a good story line, great character chemistry and clear diction..and i love those wonderful character actors and guest celebrities from the Golden years of Hollywood. Without the gratuitous gore and numbing violence that is today a feature of many drama action pics...where the visual effects substitute for the story line. And the violence is the plot......I understand times continually change....but its so nice to go back to a simpler time where black and white wasnt just on the screen....society had a greater sense of ethics, and moral fiber...and yes even though great progress has been made in many areas since that time....the level of dehumanizing we see today is a sad indictement of what could have been. Its nice to know that our film ingenuity is our own little time machine...that we can board and experience over and over..... Cheers..

Della Street, er, Barbara Hale, was a customer of mine a couple of times when I was working my way through college at a part-time job at the May Co. North Hollywood store. First time she came in (1976), the other two sales people had no clue who she was. I recognized her immediately and said to the other two, I'll help her. "Why, who is she?" one asked. "That's Barbara Hale," I replied. "Huh? Who?" said the other salesperson. "She's Perry Mason's secretary, Della Street!" I explained. Slowly, the lights went on in their heads. Meanwhile, I went over and showed her I knew who she was -- and what a nice customer she was, indeed. Classy lady!

I always loved it when Paul would appropriately greet Della as "Hi beautiful". Great series, great characters, stories, clothes, automobiles, ect. Another gem on the show was Ray Collins. Read his bio some time. Started in vaudeville, worked with Orson Wells. He would steal ever scene he was in. Love the show, still watch it today. Raymond Burr, toured with many USO shows around the world to support the troops. If you remember some episodes where Perry had a broken arm. This was real because Raymond Burr (a Canadian) was in a plane crash on one of his USO tours and broke his arm. Talk about the show and how it was regarded amongst his peers. The one and only Bette Davis stood in for Perry on one episode. At one time, Burr was one of the highest paid actors in Hollywood. Great, Great show.

I always felt the "unspoken" relationship between "Perry and Della" was there. she went to his apartment, he went to her house, etc. In the movies, there was a lot of clues that showed them together, but living apart. But in the first movie, he had became a judge and she went to work for someone else and they hadn't seen each other for awhile, so it looked like they called it quits until he started defending her, then it was "back on"😍😍😍

No, Earl Rogers was the inspiration for the Perry Mason character. Erle Stanley Gardner was also an attorney but was more noted for being an author. He wrote, among many other things, the Perry Mason stories. Barbara Hale had one of the most fabulous voices on television.

Erle Stanley Gardner played the judge in the final Perry Mason episode. Raymond Burr originally tried out for the role of Hamilton Burger (Hamburger?) while William Talman tried out for the role of Perry Mason. Barbara Hale worked with her son William Katt twice; in the Perry Mason TV movies and she played Ralph's mother on the Greatest American Hero.

Whenever they did the conventions, Mrs. Hale pinched his cheek and said: Isn't he such a good boy?
William Katt then said: Mom, Please! Not in front of my fans, Entertainment Tonight, TMZ and Betsy Goodrich and her pets.

Interesting video, but Barbara Hale only guest-starred on one episode of Ironside. As for Erle Stanley Gardner, his control over the characters came from the fact that he created them. Gardner was the author of the Perry Mason books. David Ogden Stiers played D.A. Michael Reston in several of the Perry Mason movies. After Burr's death, they brought in Paul Sorvino and Hal Holbrook who played lawyers who were friends of Perry Mason. They did not try to replace Burr as Perry Mason.

Missing from the narrative is the story that the network and the producers were keen on updating Perry Mason's secretary with a younger, more contemporary actress. But Raymond Burr would have none of it. He told them that if Barbara Hale was not to be Della Street in the new Perry Mason films then he would simply not be Perry Mason. And that was that.

In the early Perry Mason books, Perry proposes marriage to Della (more than once). She turned him down (each time). She explained that if she were to marry him, he would install her in a house in the suburbs and turn the management of the house and the raising of their kids to her. He'd still focus most of his time and energy on his legal practice. Della wanted to be part of his life and felt she could do that better as his secretary than as his wife.

I still enjoy Perry Mason soooo much! I found a channel on my "Fire stick" that shows back-to-back episodes, beginning with Season 1: Episode 1!! I thought I had seen all the episodes...WRONG! I can definitely say I have now seen 8 MORE episodes that are like brand new (to me)! In so many ways, those were more "simple" times. There were more morals, & manners used by most people! Of course, NO period of time was/is perfect, yet it seems like "those were the days"!😊

That was a good show. My wife and I are watching them all now on one of the cable channels. It may be in the old black and white format, but the writing was good -- much better than today's fare, and it's kind of nice to see the time period I grew up in. Those giant "battleship" cars. Good thing gasoline was so cheap back then!!!

    • @luke_skywanker7643
      @luke_skywanker7643 11 місяців тому

Oh, my! I literally DROOL over those cars. I think they're mostly all placed there as "product placement" deals. Also, there are the little "ads" that appear (an early version of "pop ups?") when the end of show credits are running. Stuff like old-time household cleaners and all. I'm 68, so I'm old enough to remember those "old" cars. They wree big as boats when you were inside. I don't think I'd have much trouble living in my car if I had one of those old behemouths. They were so heavilly built they really needed thoee big gas-guzzler engines to get them moving. One of the other things I like about that show is the "classines" and "genteel" "civilized" manner in which most people behaved back then. These days, people think being ignorant and rude is somehow a 'virtue.' @@chrissyyork8646

Earle Stanley Gardner wrote the Perry Mason novels, beginning in the late thirties. They are easy to read puzzles usually ending in a big courtroom scene. Gardner himself was trained in the law but he wrote for the pulp magazines of the twenties and thirties, mostly detective stories when his first Perry Mason novel became a big seller.

The show came out when my mom was a child but we watched the reruns with her as kids. I love the show so much, along with many others from then, even tho they started well b4 my time. I still watch bc it takes me back to my childhood n the good days we had. I also love seeing the actors n actresses of Old Hollywood. Shows back then were classy n just made sense. I knew Raymond was gay but I didn't care. U could tell their relationship was implied and that was good enough for me.

I grew up watching Perry Mason. My grandmother was a huge fan of the show and watched it whenever it was on. She never thought there was anything more than a professional relationship between Perry and Della, and I believe her. Watching the show today, I can see that Perry and Della were friends and cared about each other, but there was no romance in the relationship, because neither would accept it. All of the actors on the show were excellent. As for the movies, I believe David Ogden Stiers played a prosecutor in a few of the shows, and he was also very good and believable in that role.

According to a TV Guide article published in connection with the 1985 TV-movie "Perry Mason Returns," Erle Stanley Gardner, who created the Mason character, hadn't liked the 1930's Warner Bros. Perry Mason films in which Mason and Della Street DID date and ultimately got married. He also hadn't liked the casting of Warren William, a gentlemanly actor, as Mason. Gardner imagined the character as more of a roughneck, and in 1955 he was given a list of three actors to choose from and he chose Raymond Burr. (Alas, the article didn't say who the other two were.) It was likely Gardner's distaste for the 1930's Mason movies that led him to take such a hard line against the TV Mason having any sort of romantic relationship with Della.

I think that's what truly shines through and still makes it so popular to this day. That plus theres no gratuitous violence and definitely no nudity and sex. Raymond Burr, Barbara Hale, William Hopper, William Tallman and the fantastic Ray Collins. I love the show so much I own the complete set and watch it every day on tv. Big Perry Mason fan. It was one of those shows that you really had to pay attention to see who the actual murders was. It wasn't like a lot It shows that gave you the hot and the murder of front. Columbo was a show like that. Which was also an incredible show but you always knew from the very beginning who was the murderer and it was just a matter of time until Frank Columbo bug the hell out of the murderer for them to make a mistake.
Perry Mason on the other hand you had to sit there and wait to the very end of the show for him to explain how he knew who the murderer was.
William DeWolf Hopper Jr. was my favorite character on the show.
    RIP William DeWolf Hopper Jr. January 26, 1915 - March 6, 1970.
He was tall and handsome and he had a major presence on the screen. Always liked the friendship he had with with Perry and Della.
Many people don't know this but William DeWolf Hopper mother was the famous hollywood gossip columnist Hedda Hopper. At the peak of her career, she had over 35+ million readers. It has been mentioned that her power was so great that she destroyed many careers during the Hollywood Blacklist years of the 30s and 40s. Though these rumors we're mostly unsubstantiated, this list "directly damaged or ended the careers and income of scores of individuals working in the film industry."
