It has made my day coming across you singing Gaudete here - as I have always loved the song. I bought the single when it came out, in . . . Wait for it . . . 1972! Yes, FIFTY years ago now - and I still have it in my record collection. I love seeing you all fresh-faced and innocent-looking here lol. Lydia, you are sooooo talented - and I am really happy being such a big fan of yours!
You chose a tough environment to sing it in, but kudos for courage. Just a thought, no matter what the audience is like or how some react, don't be aware of them at all. Sing the song to it's core, and not only will you enjoy singing such beautiful music, but those in the audience who are going to like it (you can't please all the people all the time) will feel it most fully. Zeus knows, I'm no seasoned pro, but it's at least ONE useful thing I've learned along the way.
I am impressed, the main vocals I understand but it is the female lead that I find most astonishing in remembering the latin. Beautifully done, kudos :-)
Neil Badger Thanks so much! Honestly I really truly appreciate your words. I love this song and I love to sing in Latin because there's something so graceful about the language. :)
I caught part of Gaudete while in the supermarket and decided to listen to all of it when I got back in. This version was near the top of suggestions from UA-cam and, following my hunch, I clicked it. I then spent the next hour listening to the rest of the songs you've uploaded. You really do have a supremely beautiful voice. And if you ever get the urge to cover Mary Hopkins' "Those were the days", I'd love to hear it.
treeefrogUK thank you so much this is a lovely comment! As you can see some of the videos, including this one, are very old! I was actually 15 here. I'll try to upload a more current version of Gaudete eventually! Have a lovely week and thanks again :)
you're very welcome :) I had to grin at the face you pulled when that chap walked through the shot in the middle of the song - I saw the exact same expression on my eldest daughter's face when she was that age sooooo many times! :D
Mr Tauber’s comment is the same that I ran past my Classics Master ( an Exhibitioner at Brasnose )about 30 years ago. He blew me out of the water with his state.
Outstanding voice and great Latin pronunciation, I hope the crowd noise blocked more applause than I could hear because you deserved it. Think Maddy would give a thumbs up
Wunderbar, I Need this without the horrible westfield sounds in the Background, pleeeaase send me on mp3 .....excusez mon bad english .....seehr guter stimmumfang
hi there. I know, the background noise is annoying. I'm thinking about recording more songs in my house into my microphone kit as it will make for a cleaner sound. thanks so much for the comment! :)
Lydia Gerrard Well, for one thing, Latin is much more phonetic than English. I happen to speak Maltese (my mother language), English, Italian, and a little French to get by. There is some Latin in all of these languages.
Wonderful lovely voice, but the Steeleye Span version is not the best to learn by, because of their very poor latin. It is better for you to listen to the King Singers version which is almost as good as it gets. Also the Prima Luce version is great. When you hear those I think you will agree.
@Wilhelm Tauber I don't think you understand the differences and nuances between English vulgar Latin and continental Latin of that particular era in history. Scholarship suggests that the ordinary man's latin pronunciation in britain during that time would've differed significantly from the classical Latin. Therefore, would be far less like the King's Singers and more like Steeleye Span. This is also clearly the case in many of today's modern languages spoken in different geographical areas. Indeed, we also hear variations of pronunciation within the same country.
Absolutely incredible. I love the look. 50s mixed with goth and rock. Your voice is incredible. This quirky performance should have millions of views!
How kind thank you so much! Yes I was about 15 here and loved that style. I’m still into quirky clothing! So pleased you like this cover :)

by the way, it is in Latin.
Yeah i know, did i say it was another language by accident? it's about rejoicing the birth of jesus i think. Latin is way cooler than english
Lydia Gerrard Well, for one thing, Latin is much more phonetic than English. I happen to speak Maltese (my mother language), English, Italian, and a little French to get by. There is some Latin in all of these languages.
