    The blue and white gingham skirt and the blue dress are absolute bangers! I see why you feel awesome in them :)
    My creative process when it comes to sewing is quite different from most people's I guess - I do living history and re-enactment and I need stuff to wear for that. So I dig through archaeological records and historical sources and talk to other re-enactors and gather from that how clothes in the late Iron Age/early Middle Ages might have looked like and then try to re-create them on a historically plausible level that is still doable for me and my financial and spoon restraints. So taking short cuts like buying machine woven and chemically dyed fabric that still looks historically plausible but I can afford. Then I hate the cutting but from there it's mostly calm hand sewing and I enjoy that a lot.
    I wish I also had time to sew modern garments for everyday wear but I rarely get around that. But hopefully when I have more of a kit together for a new time period I'm starting (late 14th century). I have a lot of ideas and some nice fabrics for vintage inspired dresses and blouses :)

    It's good to know you have fails and dont always love what you sew. I for some reason got it in my head that it would be fun to sew things for other people and now that I've picked up the fabric i feel obligated. Now those projects are holding me back from making the things that are inspiring me in the moment. I just want to get the fabric that isnt for me out of my stash and only sew for myself from now on

    I get a feeling of guilt when I get something wrong (and a piece has to be scrapped). Getting over that feeling and pushing through to be okay with garments not being perfect is my biggest struggle. I really admire the fact that you pointed out the failures being okay. Sometimes you watch UA-cam and all people post are the wins and it can make you feel like other sewists don't make as many mistakes as myself. I admire your sewing skills a lot and it's nice to see that even someone who sews great things has pieces that aren't perfect. It's when we put so much pressure on ourselves to be perfect that we lose the fun of it all.

    • @HaleyMarieVintage

      Yes, I generally plan that what I tackle on camera will work, but off camera I am constantly trying things and failing. I don't think there is a single seamstress out there who only produces perfect work, but often what we love is what we put out there and we "hide" the things that down't work out.

    I can relate to the cutting out something and then coming back to it later, its like trying to go back to a video game character after a LONG hiatus. you don't really know where you left off, or where you were trying to go. the gingham skirt is super cute. I want to learn how to take something that is hand me down or thrifted and change it to fit my needs. (add pockets etc). that hollywood dress is adorable. You really are beautiful in that.

    I'm just getting back into sewing & crafting, plus beading/jewelry-making. I kept saying " When I get my stash trimmed down to real supplies I'll use and my apartment is better organized/set-up for it, then I'll start" But the truth is, due to age & health I may only have 10-15 years left to do the things I want to do. So I decided to make a Day Planner into a Creating Journal Planner. I've set up sections for listing fabrics & patterns for clothing, use calendar grid pages for fabric swatches for quilts, ideas for jewelry items, etc. I'm not done with setting it up, but it already has gotten me doing a sewing project I planned 2 years ago. Simple thing , but I need 3 good laundry bags for the laundromat. Plus I'll be using a NEW machine. My 60s Singer was 3X as much to fix as what this new one cost. Sorry for rambling on.

    I always enjoy seeing your off camera sewing projects - thanks for sharing! I'm at a point in my sewing journey where I mostly sew for me (and scrap busting bandanas for my dog - heehee) and I don't share it online - it's what makes me happy. While I rarely sew for other people, I did recently teach a couple close friends how to make pj pants. It was fun since I got to hang with friends and teach them some basic sewing skills. Every loves their pj pants :-)

    You made so many lovely garments this past year. I didn't see the "diaper look" in the shorts you made, I thought they looked great on you. I love that 1940s dress you showed towards the end, the one that people ask you about quite a bit. You are look beautiful in that dress. I understand what you are talking about when you said how the heatwave makes it difficult to be comfortable in any clothing. We are in the middle of a big heatwave in California as well. I am tired of 100 degree plus weather, it actually makes me feel nauseous. Enjoyed your video. Have a great week.

    I have made the Vera top (with original V neck) on my straight-stitch Featherweight machine, using only a ballpoint needle and slightly stretching the fabric while stitching. I was very proud of that top. In the end, I donated it because it was a size too small (or maybe the fabric didn't have enough stretch) and the color did not suit me. Like you, I like to learn on non-precious fabrics. Also, because knits don't fray, I skipped finishing the raw edges and they did not look bad.

    Love seeing these. Thanks for sharing! Especially love the blue and pink Hollywood pattern dress.
    I have been sewing clothes for myself for many, many years and even though I feel my skills get better the more I sew, I still end up donating 2/3rds of the clothes I make. Mostly, I don't do muslin/toile/test garments (too lazy and not enough time) and I'm very curvy so it makes fitting difficult. Most patterns need a lot of fixing, unfortunately.

    I post my sewing projects on tiktok, but I don't post consistently because it takes me a while to save up for them. In-between projects I'll usually post dress up videos. Although, I haven't even posted that in months. I ❤ sharing my hobby but I also feel like it's good for me to take a break from it too. That way when you get back into it you still love it instead of feeling burned out.

    I think my favorite was the blouse like a jacket and gored skirt. I think it suits your style and does not look too business. It might have gone that way with a solid somber color. The checks and the colors make it look sweet. If you wanted, you could soften the look with a silk flower on the collar, or a frilly handkerchief and brooch pinned to it. I really enjoyed seeing the stuff you are making off camera. I hope you will make other videos like this. I'm glad you are planning some off time for yourself. You are incredibly generous to make content ahead of time for us to still get new stuff while you take care of yourself. (Edited for spelling.)

    Hi Haley 👋 I miss you over on instagram buddy ❤ I am glad to hear your thoughts about sewing on camera. I really enjoy these videos where people just show me the stuff they make 💕✂️ but I know watching sewing videos helps others learn “how to sew” 😅 but as a seamstress myself, I often skip that part. Regarding the two-piece dress with a jacket-like top, the second you started describing it I thought of it as a suit. There is some whimsy in the design, but in general, I agree that it’s very professional and almost formal. You may need something like that sometimes, but it’s not what you want to wear every day.

    I love the idea of a sewing retreat to be around people who enjoy the same thing as me, but I have no clue where to start to find one near me. My whole project process is: get inspired > start project > get no more dopamine from project > add project to UFO pile > start process over again

    I always cut 1, sew 1 except an outfit with pieces. Maybe that's still 1? I liked the 2 pc suit very much on you. Knits are difficult for me. I purchased some (LOL) new looks on the 99 cent sale specifically for knits. I've made 1. I don't particularly care for it, but my friends love it. Maybe I will try some more. The cream top is gorgeous. I was surprised at how much I liked it. That could be a knit I like. Thanks for the catch up. I enjoyed it very much.

    • @HaleyMarieVintage
      @HaleyMarieVintage  Місяць тому

      Yeah I think why I don't do any knits is they often are simpler patterns that don't have the same "wow" fit as when you tailor a woven perfectly. There is just something less satisfying for me about making a tshirt that fits, but I've tried to find some knit patterns that remind me more of the wovens I like to sew and that seems to make me want to sew them a bit more!

    I feel the same right now. I feel like the last couple of items I've made are just okay. Not anything that makes me super happy. I've learned a lot from them but still not something that makes me feel, me. So I understand. But I'm still trying. I almost gave up but I'm currently working on a new dress that I too, was told was complete and didn't have the skit pieces 🙄 so I had to search my collection for another but yeah, I hope it turns out well. 🤞🏼 I love your makes. And I enjoyed you telling us how you feel, makes me not feel like I'm the only one in this weird limbo feeling.

    Hi Haley Marie!
    Thanks for sharing your non-filmed projects! I especially enjoyed the Hollywood dress and the button dress you made recently and are wearing :)
    I also really enjoy your cost breakdown of projects including the cost of your time!
    I think a lot about how I couldn't manage to film my sewing process, and not just because it's absolute chaos and improper methods and I can't follow pattern instructions so I usually wing the construction. I occasionally make a video of a few minutes for my IG stories but even that feels so challenging!
    I also wonder about how your physical limitations affect your sewing. One of the reasons I am sewing more this year is my physical limitations are making other hobbies impossible.
    I haven't been much of a garment sewist, but this year I have worked on 5 dresses, short stays, and am slowly making a Victorian style corset.
    I have autonomic neuropathy that makes me sweat when I stand (temperature regulation problems) and combined with the Seattle heat wave I have to wrap my head in terrycloth or I drip sweat on my lovely 40s patterns! I own so many vintage patterns I either need to sell them or start using more of them!
    Great that you are working on finding balance with your channel and non channel sewing. I look forward to hearing how that goes.
    As always, I enjoy your channel, and I'm not able to support you monetarily but I could probably send a couple of vintage sewing patterns your way if you are interested and there is a way to do so that doesn't give out your info to a stranger on the Internet.

    • @HaleyMarieVintage
      @HaleyMarieVintage  Місяць тому +1

      Thank you!
      My physical limitation vary in how they effect my sewing, the number one thing is my hands and shoulders which make the hand sewing I can do incredibly limited, I would love to do a lot more beading, embroidery, decorating and smocking but right now my body limits me. My lower back things have gotten better though which make the actual sewing machine process and cutting out patterns better. It seems to come in seasons of life, and I just have to do what I can when I can.

    • @SashaNoelDesign
      @SashaNoelDesign Місяць тому

      @@HaleyMarieVintage I'm glad that you can do the machine sewing and impressed with how much you accomplish with your physical limitations! I always enjoy seeing what you have made. I move from one type of making to another as I cope with my own limits, but sometimes I just kind of give up for a few weeks, or maybe I should say recharge and recuperate, haha, but there are days when it's incredibly frustrating to accept my limits and hard to put a positive spin on it! I did finish the hand sewing my latest vintage dress the other day, yay, progress does happen although very slowly!

    Do you keep a sewing journal? Mine has a list of my body measurements, a checklist of measurements to do on the flat pattern pieces, and notes on common adjustments I usually need to make. I use this checklist for every project I start.
    I have a huge behind and I have yet to find a pattern that doesn’t require adjustments-either in the butt area, or on the back hem to make the hem parallel to the ground all the way around. 😂
