  • One of Canada's crown jewels sustained devastating damage on July 24, as wildfire tore though the beloved mountain town of Jasper. In this episode, with firefighters still battling the blaze, we speak with evacuees, an extreme weather expert, a veteran fire chief, and Alberta Premier Danielle Smith.
2:37 | Jasper town councillor Wendy Hall joins us from a cabin near Valemount just hours after losing her home in the fire.
12:30 | Extreme weather expert and former wildland firefighter Kyle Brittain explains how the Jasper wildfire spread so quickly, ultimately generating its own lightning storm.
    CHECK OUT KYLE'S WORK:
25:00 | Jamie Coutts was Slave Lake's fire chief when the town was levelled by wildfire in 2011. He gets real about why these fires happen, and who's responsible.
37:45 | Tyler Riopel, CEO of Tourism Jasper, has a message for his fellow Jasper residents and business owners.
FOLLOW TOURISM JASPER ON INSTAGRAM: / tourismjasper
43:37 | Real Talker Cyrus has us a bit misty-eyed with his Ode to Jasper.
    EMAIL THE SHOW: talk@ryanjespersen.com
48:20 | Premier Danielle Smith got emotional during a media availability about the Jasper wildfire. We take a look.
50:30 | Premier Smith joins Ryan from the road en route to Hinton, about 45 minutes east of Jasper.
1:03:10 | Ryan and Johnny debrief, and touch on public criticism around Premier Smith's emotional news conference.
1:07:20 | Jasper's a very special place for the Jespersen family. Ryan shares a few of his most memorable moments.
1:13:30 | We drop into our UA-cam live chat to see what Real Talkers are saying about Jasper.
1:26:00 | Why did the Jasper wildfire spread so quickly? Who's responsible? What role may the mountain pine beetle play in all this? We look at some of the questions people are asking.
1:28:30 | Martin says it's time to politicize wildfires, while Brad says that's "incredibly poor taste". Two different takes responding to the Jasper wildfire in this week's edition of (sorry) The Flamethrower presented by our good friends at the DQs of Northwest Edmonton and Sherwood Park.

The sad fact of the matter is that without human intervention these forests were designed by nature over time to burn themselves every 50 to 80 years. This was done to restart the stands and clean up any disease or insect pressure in the stand. We have done a remarkable job for the most part in the last 100 years to stop or restrict these burns. The new problem now is we have created a lot of old growth forest full of fuels that are primed to burn. Whether it is lightning or human caused these forests are prime to burn whenever we get the right fire conditions. Sure we could have more fire fighters, the problem being there is nothing that can be done in the face of flames that are towering 300 ft above the trees getting pushed by wind. You just get out of the way and wait for the right time. No amount of fire bombers can stop that. However communities living in forest can be more proactive in fire smarting your community. Why not have a mile wide fire break planted to grass that is grazed or burned around these cities and towns, keep trees back from buildings, something as simple as putting a tin roof on your house with cement board siding may save your house. Our summers of smoke are not done. Banff and Canmore and other places had better prepare. They are next, pine forests do not live forever, they will burn and regenerate themselves. I do want to send my thoughts and prayers to anyone affected by this fire.

Let's see how well and how fast the government actually gets help on the ground to rebuild. Start with immediate setup of temporary housing for workers to help in the rebuilding process. Someone needs to make a series on UA-cam to cover the progress.

It's disheartening to see the damage by wildfires and other disasters. Praying for the safety. We at NileBuilt are working hard to build disaster-resilient houses and plan is to build them across the nation. This is going to reduce the damage caused by various disasters.

I think that cloud seeding could be used to fight forest fires in the 21st century. The biggest challenge for severe wildfire is the formation of Pyrocumulus Clouds and lightning. Cloud seeding allows us the advantage of generating precipitation from Pyrocumulus Clouds to put out the fire. What do you think? 🤔🛩️🌧️🔥

I have never before commented on UA-cam, I want to recognize your insight!
You are the only podcaster, broadcaster, or reporter that I have encountered who draws attention to the real issue - pine beetle.
I lived in northern BC, Smithers, when pine beetle first became an issue. Was the park tweedsmere?
Government decided it was a park and nature would look after the bug.
It did not. Bugs spread, the ominous red trees appeared in my community, Smithers.
Containment attempts included innoculating trees with arsenic.
Arsenic never leaves the environment from my understanding.
Long story short, that did not work. Pine beetles became so prevalent that they were documented by the department of forestry to have jumped to spruce trees.
Now denim pine wad available; beautiful Grey streaks through the wood. Great for artist to make picture frames or lecturns for folks like Gordon Campbell to address Smithers.
Poor specific detail recollection; as I recall 20-40 percent waste wood from any piece of lumber.
Northern BC home of provincial forests.
Harvesting this infested wood meant risking transfer of bugs to every place it past.
    So....no harvest.
4 to 5 years later useless deaf standing red trees full of bugs.
Or maybe by then they hit the spruce trees.
Anyway, long story short. A local issue of dead standing pine spread. Red trees spread.
I had been accustomed to driving to Edmonton for family events several times a year.
Red trees grew over a year or two.
By year 4 or 5, when I drove to southern Ontario I saw red coniferous trees from BC to Ontario.
Thank you for being the one that points out what should be obvious; the forests across the country are full of dead stand trees.
FULL, FULL, FULL, all dead for 5 to 10 years.
They have been left there they will burn.
YOU ARE THE FIRST PERSON IN MANY YEARS TO DRAW ATTENTION TO THE REAL ISSUE.
Dead trees standing in forests across the country.
I was a newspaper publisher when newspapers actually brought you news.
    Guessing you are a
    true journalist at heart.
I hope Joe Rogan finds your podcast.
    You deserve attention.
You are telling the true in the middle of sensation. You are expressing the truth when you could just grab hold of the most viral story in Canada.
    Kudoos

We are all devastated. Of course, we are broken. She is sad AND unfortunately as Premier is responsible for the preparedness of the work groups under her leadership. An " I am sorry" is warranted. While she isn't personally responsible, last years trial by fire, just didn't really drive home the seriousness and the cost to rebuild rather than prevent. For your interview today, she needed to be able to tell us where to direct donations. A good leader should want to cut every bit of read tape for victims and all of us wanting to donate. AND in yesterday interview it was embarrassing to insist Jasper residents need to wait 7 days for assistance. That was cruel
