Turning A 90s Cannondale Into The Most Unique Gravel Bike Ever! Part 1

  • I'm trying to take a little rest from riding to give my chronic neck pain a rest so I've decided to finally tackle a Gravel bike like I hinted at when riding my Fat bike.
    This has taken some time to come together with the parts, I was quite specific on what I wanted and it took the Cute Thief a little while to get the right parts. Unfortunately I hit a hurdle with the rear disc mount and ran out of time for a single video so I'm splitting it...any thoughts on this? I know Alec Steele has lots of projects he splits up so maybe shorter episodic builds could work?
    Either way I hope you liked part 1 and I'm really looking forward to getting this finished and ridden.
    Thanks for watching!

    A 40 grit flapdisk will make those mounts dissapear in minutes 😁 If you want to be careful you can still finish the last few mm by hand.

    I love the idea... so much in fact that is exactly what just recently accomplished on my own 1994 Delta V 600 frame. I didn't go as all out and remove the brake bosses from the frame. I might attempt it in the future though now that I have seen it done) successfully. I used a 1999/2000ish Fatty SL to mount the disc brakes up front. I purchased the rear mount that works with the 3.0 series frame dropout off of e-bay. The whole thing came out pretty nice too.
    I made a post earlier about this bike on here, but for whatever reason UA-cam removed it or something. Doesn't matter, I am looking forward to seeing the finished bike!

    That windfarm footage is giving me Forza Horizon 4 flashbacks. I always loved the way the US Cannondale factory ground their alloy welds to give them an appearance to an old filet brazed steel road bike. Looking forward to part 2. My guess is purple, BTW.

    I put drop bars on my old V600 a few years ago. The bike now has a second life as a cool looking and very capable gravel bike. The 2 inch Big Apple tires have low rolling resistance and great grip and stability in loose gravel. They can be run at low pressure (20 psi) if needed on rough terrain. The Headshok soaks up impacts on potholes and rocks at speed. I do wish it had disc brakes but I make do without them. It's a fun bike.

    Great start, looking forward to the rest of the build! As for the colour, that 90s/2000s Cannondale blue is lush, but I think too obvious a choice for you, so I'm going with some sort of cross between your dirt jump frame style of paint job and those psychedelic t-shirts you hinted would get a come back.

    This is great to see. I used to work in a bicycle factory that did welds like these for some of the bike frames we made. My part of the production line did the finish work on the smooth welds. Looking at your work with the cantilever studs I'd offer you a job! Nice smooth work, good to see you went with a file and didn't attempt it with power tools, things often happen too fast with them and sadness ensues.

    Are you thinking drop bars? They have quite a high stack height, especially if you're thinking 650b wheels. Would work well! Surely do a nice wide/flared one which is really comfy for off-road. Looking forward to this!

    Ali, should get yourself a cheap dremel (ebay has some for like £15). You can put a little wire wheel on it to scrape off paint easier, or a high grit sanding block to smooth out bits. Really useful for this kind of stuff.

  • @TimInertiatic
    @TimInertiatic 2 роки тому +5

    I'd be really tempted to add a torque arm up to the rim brake boss when fitting the disc mount. Otherwise that's a lot of torque on an unsupported dropout

    • @Ali_Clarkson
      @Ali_Clarkson  2 роки тому +4

      I really want the bike to look sleek so I’m going to try it without an arm, I’ve got a 140mm rotor going on and I won’t be doing any trials on it so I’m confident it’ll be fine (I’ve actually got two of these frames so if this breaks I’ve got a back up)

    Ali, Ali, Ali, first the stripper jokes, then the long tease and wait for part 2 :-\ "Patiently" waiting for part 2 :-|
    Seriously, was super stoked to see this build as I have an interest in that era fork, so hoping that you can answer some questions on it. Like what's the biggest 29er tyre you can fit in the fork and if not 29er, can a 650B x 2.8" fit? Have always thought that I'd love a Headshok for my rigid to just get some dampening for the front, as that's the only thing that I don't like about it with the big 2.8-3.0" tyres - undamped rebound, on off camber rooty sections of trail, is not fun.

    Hi Ali!! Great video. You keep me excited for riding while i´m studying!!
    Lately i have been watching loads of content regarding bikepacking and most people seem to be chosing belt driven drivetrains. I know that an special frame is needed for this to work, but I just wanted to pitch the idea, as I think it could give some good results when it comes to trails given the toughness of this drivetrains. There are some belts that get around the frame part, being offered sliced though the middle and they dont look bad at all. ;)

    Also would love to know if the headshock with its roller bearings is more supple on small bumps, comparison with lauf?
    Cheers!
