I absolutely love this build just to let you know even though I've been subscribed and I selected all notifications I have not been getting notifications for the videos... 😢 I had to look it up to get the videos which I have binge watching today
@@OliverPickard I was stopped by the police way back round 1970 whilst riding my Lambretta. I had removed all of the panel work so the officer was saying it wasn't road worthy. I told that I was a trainee motorcycle mechanic (true) and he said the "the cobbler was often the worse shod person in town". he was right in my case to a degree but couldnt find anything mechanically wrong 😃
Great to watch. Really enjoyed yours and your dad's philosophy on the build. By you and for you. Thank-you for the construction time and the labour of editing.
You’re speaking about always having made things for other people with the constraints of time/price and the desire to make something for yourselves really struck a chord, with me! I’m plotting my retirement ( or at least doing less for others!) and dream of riding my bike more and making things for my family and I. Your project is such a huge inspiration. Thank you.
Oliver, just watching the interaction and cooperation between you and your father as the two of you build The Mosquito is worth watching in itself. Add to it that you are building a car together from the ground up and you have one of the most engaging channels on UA-cam in my opinion. As always, keep up the good work guys and I can't wait for the next video.
I'm really enjoying this build guys! I relate so much to always doing stuff for someone else, I need to work on doing stuff for me, my wife reminds me every so often but I just can't bring myself to take time out and do what I need too for me.
You guy's are AMAZING!! THANK YOU for all that you two do! Forever, will I be a fan!! The MOSQUITO becomes more AWESOME with every new episode!! Thank you for doing these videos!!
Hi, greetings from South Africa. I just love watching every episode of the mosquito build. Haven't missed one since I started watching. And love the fact that you're doing it together. Can't wait to see more, excited for WHEN it is finished. All of the best.
Have no doubt, I am enjoying this, it’s Brilliant! It’s guys like you, home built by Jeff and BINKY that I find inspirational. All Passion Personified. Hugh. ,
20% takes 80% if it works. I like to see your progress. The symbiotic relation you and your father has and the way you explain everything. Im not there building the car with you but it feels you are a friend to the viewer and that you are keeping us along on a very interesting journey (even thow its in a garage) for us to behold. Educative and entertaining in a way most things isnt anymore. Following along.
I'm inerested in the whole legal process of getting a self-build vehicle oad registered. You should definitely do a whole series on the bureaucratic hoops you have to jump through, and the associated costs.
Edit: I guess I'm wrong, I'd be interested to hear about it too 😂. Since he started with a Mini based GT I think its registered as the original shell. Depending on your jurisdiction.
Gentlemen, build your masterpiece! Thank you for sharing it with us. I just wish I would be able to see it in person and drive it when it’s complete. Are cars like this ever really complete though?
I love this build. This and (eventual) updates to Binky are extremely motivating. I currently have mk1 VW GTI and 73 Opel GT projects, but my goal is to start on either a Locost build or an IRS Locost-style chassis under a mk1 Scirocco body in the next couple years, VW powered of course. 🙂
Your attention to detail is excellent! Looks like you left sufficient room for thermal sleeve around the tubing... as much air space is possible would also be excellent, but I know you are very tight on space at that point.
Another great episode gentlemen! In regards to your comment about getting some good quality jubilee clips I have a suggestion. A mate and I have just finished building a vw mk2 golf with a big horsepower turbo engine. We found a tool called a “clamptite” tool from the USA. It’s a hose clamping method using lockwire and the special tool. The tool can actually be made with a bit of light fabricobbling. Have a look on google for diy clamptite tool and you’ll see ones made from turnbuckle. The joints that won’t be touched after final assembly are prime candidates for this method and it’s much neater and smaller than a jubilee clip. The joints don’t look that strong but we couldn’t separate them so nothing to worry about in terms of reliability. All the best and keep on keeping on!
AFAIK most car bodies generate lift, a flat floor will definitely help though. It looks like the front is going to be light from the balance point on the jack stands, (granted there's a lot left to go in there) so perhaps front end downforce is the priority? I find Julian Edgars books and UA-cam channel good for developing my understanding of aerodynamics if it helps.
The centre of weight with me in the car will be around the gearstick but you are right shedding air from the front arches and minimizing the effect of the tires is definitely a priority but so is rear end lift

One of the reasons I love making these videos as someone from a family of artists and engineers is so many engineers never get to show off their skills and their achievements belong to someone else. I think that's a huge problem and why there is such a deficit of engineers

Great work as always. I'm always thinking ahead and I know you have to widen the body and add flares. Have you considered pulling a mold of the finished body to be able to replace if ever needed and more importantly, to build the new shell out of carbon fiber. You'd save about 15% of the weight of the fiberglass and maybe more being that the original body used the old methodologies of fiberglass work that tended to be weigh heavier than needed. I know part of that is just down to cost more than anything, but curious what your thoughts were.
Getting caught up. I appreciate your willingness to rework things until you get them right. Also, "time is money" is a terrible way to look at the world, you've got it right.

First time leaving a comment because I started my first watch through a few weeks ago. Loved the content and it’s really funny since project Binky and Throttle stop garage are my other favorite builds. Binky “We need a bracket”, mosquito “if we do it this way we won’t need a bracket.” But what I came down here to say os this. The first time rotating tires on 15’ WRX I was jacking up the front on a sloped drive and when I got the front tire off the ground a few inches the back tire was also off the ground. So some manufacturers still make a stiff chassis. 😂
Are you going to keep those old slide brake calipers or will you be upgrading them? I mean on a car that's being built specifically for how it feels to drive I would imagine you'd want brakes that feel nice. They might not stop faster but they would be lighter and have that more precise feel.
We looked at aftermarket brakes but over braking this car would be really easy to do and those 1.8 Mazda roadster brakes are actually really well designed and lighter than they look
Très cool, lads! In regards to your engine, put some oil down the bores & rotate it every so often (very smokey on start up, but well worth the precaution). I've been caught out before by leaving a very expensive rebuilt engine for a year only to find it needed re-machining... place "sad face" here! Live & learn!! Cheers. Leigh.

Oliver, you and your Dad seem a lot like the story of Chuck Beck here in States. He seems to have had that same problem- he would set out to do something for himself, others would see it and offer money. Ultimately he made a deal with a constructor; he conceptualized and prototyped several cars, notable Porsches and when he had a product he was satisfied with, off to the manufacturer it would go. I'm glad it happened- Chuck is still with us, pushing 90, having really great ideas and attending big BBQs in his honor. You've set a goal and I expect you to honor it. I'm still a bit iffy on whether you will fit into it if it has even carpet on the floor, though, and the mystery is keeping me up some nights. Not to worry- I've lots of pop corn to see me through- because it's certain you and your Dad will do something remarkable if we just let you. On dealing with criticism of your choices; there is an immutable rule in all of the motor hobbies- "the title holder and/or the purchaser of the paint get's to pick the color", all others are just noise. This principle applies to all the parts and decisions therein. Anybody give you grief, tell em' Fred told you!
I'm familiar with Chuck his little shogun is a cool thing. I don't really get much non constructive criticism it's mostly people offering an idea or asking why I haven't bought a certain tool but it's all done with good intentions 👍🏻
You said, "If you dubble a cars weight you also have to dubble it´s down force to keep it planted" , why doesnt the weight increse help with having it panted to the road? / from a curious swede!
Newton taught us that mass traveling in a direction wants to keep going in that direction. The momentum trying to pull the car to the outside of a bend is mass x speed. so if you decrease the mass you can go around the corner at a much higher speed for the same momentum plus a lower weight allows for softer suspension and lower tyre pressure further increasing mechanical grip
The one axle stand thing is factory Fiat X1/9. You get a jack with a peg sticking out that goes into a stamped tube about where you have yours and jack up both wheels on that side at once.

The comment "the shoe maker walks barefoot" was really profound to hear and see with the mosquito progress in mind.
Very similar to the US version of "The car mechanics car"

Your car makes me keep thinking about the mid engine Honda Del Sol that Honda should have built.
It's 5mm shorter than a Honda Beat and has a higher power to weight ratio than the NSXs so that would be one heck of a Del Sol
