- In March of 2020 the Golden Gate Railroad Museum relocated its steam locomotive 2472 along with GP9 3194, and H-12-44 1487, to their new home at Schellville on the Northwestern Pacific. After a brief overview on the history of the engine, the 2472 is seen moving over the Union Pacific, California Northern, and NWP, drawing attention from curious onlookers where ever it rolled by. The future looks bright for GGRM, and hopefully we will see 2472 steaming at Schellville in time for her 100th birthday in 2021.
Thank God we have such people to do such things
Thank you!!!! I’ve been wondering what happened to 2472 for so long! I remember riding a train pulled by it in 2002 when I was very young, great to see it’s still here
My bicycle commute during the 1980's went through Bay Meadows parking lot & San Mateo County fair grounds where this locomotive was being restored. I observed this work in progress for 10 years as I pedaled my way to & from work. I moved from the area in 1988. I attended the 1991 Railfair in Sacramento where I was able to see this beautiful restored steam locomotive.
I remember this engine at the San Mateo fairgrounds for many years so glad to see it got running again.
Great video. Thanks for sharing
I hope 2472 comes back to life one day
It is already steamed up
Great show!
I live at the tail end of the former NWP line which is now the SMART train line, I hope I get to see 2472 make a trip all the way to Marin county sometime in the future.
Very well done, Hunter. Glad to see you were there to document this move.
Its good to see it has someplace to call home. Thx for the video.
I was in the chase vehicle following her 4:30 departure from Hurst 07 the next morning arrived at Suisun
Can't believe its been a year now since 2472 was moved to its new home and now that it's 100 years old this month. Glad to know that I heard news recently work is starting on 2472.
That was the last time the caboose saw the main line also, it now sits on the North spur behind other motive power
Got three trains of repair the back of service a 2021!!!!!!!😨😨😨😨
Very nice video of 2472 I remember standing at the platform at the Richmond Amtrak station as it went past I believe it was on its way to Sacramento railroad museum for the rail fair in 1991
Hope Southern Pacific 2472 returns soon. I live in San Jose, California. And I hope this locomotive would return to San Jose sometime in the future.
There's tons of possibilities for 2472 to operate if the train runs to Willits It's optional for it to run on the California Western route to Fort Bragg California Although one Problem to that would probably be the 30゚ sharp curves on the railroad
That would be amazing if they ran that route with it.
Unfortunately the tracks of the old NWP between Santa Rosa and Willits are not in service and are not likely to ever be usable again north of Cloverdale.
would 2472 be steamed again.
always wondered why they remove the crank rod whenever a steam locomotive is moved like that.
If you're referring to the eccentric crank for the valve gear, I think it's an extra piece that could come loose and fall off; better to have it safely stored so it isn't damaged in any way. . .
Thank goodness it's still with us!
Beautiful and save most historical locomotives but I see 2472 head light is missing or stolen?
Probably stored away safely so it doesn't get damaged during the move. . .
Excellent video/audio with a perfect narration. Although I was familiar with the lines, the narration helped a lot without impinging on the locomotive sounds.
Outstanding job with the video.
I also provided security for it until it was picked up during the days others at night
Bravo!
What happened to #2472's piston rods and headlight?
The main piston rods are usually removed so as to not score the cylinders. There's no way to get lub oil to them. And since it's being moved while it's not under power they probably removed the headlamp so it wouldn't get stolen.
Nice Show
Great video!
Cool video Thanks for sharing. LJL
Why couldn't it stayed in Niles Canyon
The bell sounds like Strasburg 90’s bell
90's bell is completely different compared to 2472
Why was Santa Cruz not picked?
They already pre-picked that is why and Santa Cruz is way to far.
it would have been awesome if they came to santa cruz especially because of its history with southern pacific even thought 2472 could not go to felton because of the turns and the tunnel the fairbanks morse and the gp9 could but i am happy to see it found a home.
17:00 Killed My Ears lol
why do the remove the forward light on the steam train????
Prevention of damage and theft
I worked on it in the beginning at SM cty fairgrounds. Like to see. It if I may
Well kiddo you might get a chance to repeat this video in the opposite direction possibly in the near future
What's going to happen to the SP GP9 and the Fairbanks Morse?
They are operational and part of the GGRM collection
Will it be rebuilt?
