Hi John. Gibson costs that much just because that's what it says on its headstock. This guitar is made VERY WELL and feels like a champ when you hold it. I am not a brand name biggot and this guitar is A LOT of a guitar for its price regardless what it says on headstock. Yes I know about Tokais, Burnys and Orvilles from Japan past and present, but this is the one at least for me. I don't miss having a Gibson LP Custom.
Hey GGG! Chris Hunger from England here. You speak the truth, of course. But as an owner of the disputed Gibson LP custom (mine is a "custom" custom) I have to say something in its defence. You are right about quality; as you know I have an ESP Horizon and the finish is just perfection. The finish on my LP is very, very good but not as perfect as my ESP. Having said that, yes the Gibbo is very expensive but it is also the most iconic guitar out there.
There's something I think all guitarists should know about finishes. A traditional nitro-cellulose lacquer finish (like Gibson uses) is a thinner, softer finish that takes longer to apply and allows the wood to vibrate and resonate more, thus improving tone (subjective). Most all other manufacturers apply a super hard and durable Polyurethane that looks more glassy, smooth and "perfect" than nitro, but can damper vibration of the wood and stifle tone. A "perfect" finish is not always better.
Hey Triple G after some research and an email responce from ESP i found out that Edwards guitars are NOT made in Japan where the ESP guitars are made. All the preliminery work is made on an ESP facility in China, then they move them to Japan and do the finish process installation of all the electronics and final inspection in Saitama,Tokyo.
Cool video. We are around the same age. I purchased a chibson custom and I'm modifying it to look like the John Sykes model. I'm going to make a video for UA-cam.
Very good Review.I have played the same model guitar and it s AMAZING.Nothing to envy to Gibson.Similar quality if not better.I love the ebony fretboard.MIJ guitars are GREAT! I am sure it will be one of the Knock offs in the market and highly valued in the future.
I got the same guitar and was lucky to get a hold of it. I traded a Epiphone alleykat which is equally a good guitar and two hundred bucks for it at a bookstore. I have a Fender Telecaster that I'm quite fond of and some Austin guitars that are Les Paul copies that I love but this KTAR has now become my number 1, and I I have never played an actual Les Paul Custom but I am truly happy what the sound coming out of this guitar it will be one of the guitars I will die owning... not for sale.
Oh man, I think you just sold me on a guitar I didn't even mean to find. WOW. That guitar looks amazing. Just like a Gibson Les Paul Custom with chrome hardware but even cooler with the mirror cosmetics. THANKS!!!!!
sorry to hear about your arthritis, tendinitis n health issues GGG ... will keep u in my prayers n hope u will recover! don't hate calling yourself a guitarist or guitar player ... that is what u r ... don't put yourself down n don't be too modest ... u know lots about n love guitars ... u can play chords, riffs, solo here n there ... that makes u a guitarist ... give yourself some credit ... i certainly respect n give u credit GGG ... ROCK ON !!!
Hey man, nice vid! I'm thinking of going to Japan this Sep-Oct mainly for guitar shopping (Les Pauls and a Yamaha SA are on my list). Any tips on where to shop? I'm looking at new Edwards, older stuff like Orville and JV era and new Tokai, and anything else which is awesome! Cheers!!
more recently it was Mustaine who had some severe issues with his arm. How serious it was, nobody will ever know but he disbanded Megadeth for it. He came back from whatever causing ailment. Hopefully I will man up and get better too.
I think I'll run into town and take a look at the Edwards and I'll post a pic on FB for you GGG. I"m so close to getting one! The Gibson's I saw was just to pricey almost 3k man. And after watching your vid I'm convinced on the Edwards.
I'm really sorry, I did not mean to insult them. I just meant that you have to try them yourself, and not buy into all of the rhetoric. I had to delete so much because of the word count limit! I'm a MI graduate and have been a professional studio/session player for 14+ years. I have alot of LP's and LP type guitars...Many LP type guitars a outstanding in their own right, but when compared side by side, they never stand up, (except Heritage) which in the end is subjective, of course.
Don't worry man, we're just talking =) I'm interested in your informed opinion! Well, I'll definitely check out a Heritage when I make it over to the States - quite keen. The 150s are quite a bit cheaper than even an LPS, right? I'll check out the 535s also. Unfortunately we don't get them here (Australia). I'm all about value for hard earned money, as you can tell. Cheers.
Since I sold the EC1000 CTM to get this one, the answer is yes I prefer this one over EC1000 by a mile. But the EC1000CTM was a damn fine guitar still.
As for comparison, this will be based on my memory of playing one at a store called Ishibashi (Spelling??) from a year and a half ago...which I ended up not buying. First thing I noticed was the weight, super light for a custom. When I popped off the back I same that the maple cap was very slim. Because of the ebony board, customs midrange is equalized with a thicker cap than standards. Also, the mahogany is laminated.
Good point. I did consider that guitar for a short while when it was available but ultimately decided against it because of the fretboard wood being baked maple yielding a somewhat brighter tone not common with Les Pauls. Not a big fan... I am much happy with this thing. Thanks homie!
Second, the neck was alot thicker than a custom(subjective, but its a comparison). Also, the headstock angle is not 17 degrees...its more like an Epiphione's headstock angle, so I assume its a scarf joint, not one piece mahogany. Third, no fret end nibs. Again, subjective but its different than the real one so...but they were dressed quite well. The frets themselves were bigger too, and IDK if they were German silver alloy that the CS uses, which last longer. Fourth, fake pearl.
Well yes, Gibson USA has problems, but that one is based on a CS model. The CS and USA are 2 totally different animals! Yeah the copy thing is weird, but the copy was based on a real one, (which is usually a '59) that was near unattainable, then was copied by Gibson, which by that time, was not the original manufacturer anymore (Heritage)! The woods actually weren't illegal, in the sense of harvesting. It had to do with paperwork based on the Lacey Act (I really don't work for Gibson).
2 friends in a guitar shop? When was the last time someone in a guitar store knew anything, especially a large volume dealer. RIGHT, the Custom Shop has ZERO QC issues. I've been there, and own 4 Custom Shop LP's. Gibson USA is another story. I own 2 and have had some trouble with both. My point was that that specific Edwards model is not comparable to what it is trying to imitate, a Les Paul Custom. Other Edward's models may compare, which at "half the price" may be worth settling for.
That guitar is beyond cool. I have an Edwards E-LP98TLC coming in next week, can't wait. Already own a Tokai LC-85 which I think is amazing but can't hurt owning another LPC type guitar, right?
Fifth, all of the electronics(pickups excluded) and hardware were sub par. Not a biggie since most of us change that stuff out anyway, but the CS LP's use CTS, Switchcraft, Grover, and/or Tonepros, which are all useable out of the box. So, overall the whole guitar sounds and feels very different from a LP Custom. Now, that being said, it's a hell of alot of guitar for that price range. IMHO its between an Epiphone and a Gibson USA, but closer to an Epiphone.
LP custom shop has ZERO QC issues? WRONG. Two of my friends who have worked in guitar stores - big Gibson dealers - say the opposite. If this stands up to a Gibson USA at less than half the price, then awesome.
Sadly I was broke when the auction was going on. Therefore no bids. I don't get paychecks so it's very unpredictable when I'd have some spendable money.... There were some I wanted badly...
I've been palying metal since 1983, and I've owned at least 20 guitars over the years. Right now I have an Edwards Explorer, and I think it's the best guitar I've owned. I've had '84 and '91 Gibson Explorers, and the Edwards is better, IMHO.
How does one go about ordering a guitar through Edwards? I was looking into ordering their style of a 59 Reissue, but I can't read Japanese so I can't tell from their website. Rad guitar though man!
Your LP Custom is EXQUISITE. Don't get me wrong. I love me some genuine Gibson LP Customs for sure. At some point, I just need to pull back and enjoy my Porsche although that Lamborghini Aventador down the street is a way faster car. You feel me?
I saw gibson put out a les paul custom classic that is i think $1900. You should check those out though i would probably take that edwards over a gibson.
Also, I live the next city over from the largest Heritage dealer in the U.S. So, if you make it over here, you should visit them. You can have them custom order a Heritage to your specs. In the end, I think that's real value for your money...getting one really good guitar is more valuable than say, 66 mediocre guitars! Plus it's cheaper in the end too.
Cool man.I've never played a Gibson LPC myself, but I've played several LPS-one really good one, and a few crappy ones. The thing is, obviously Gibson has a lot of issues and it's more than just rhetoric,eg,the fact that they do copies of copies(Slash Appetite,Gary Moore Std etc-the latter of which was only similar specs wise to the actual Greenyburst),illegal woods, passing these costs onto the consumer etc. They don't seem to represent value for money-more money for logo. Which LPCs do you own?
edit: I meant to say polyester, not polyeurethane. Also, I'm not saying a nitro finish is always inherently better than poly, as it is possible to have a thinner poly finish that allows the wood to resonate more naturally, but the vast majority of modern guitars you see with poly finishes have a super hard and thick finish.
2 of your friends work at a store? When was the last time someone in a guitar store knew anything? I currently own 4 Custom Shops and 2 USA Les Pauls. Yes, the USA's have QC issues, but the CS are on point. So, as I said before, maybe it will stand up to a Gibson USA (at half the price), which is awesome, but not a Custom Shop. Go play some and find out for yourself! Point was that this specific model is not comparable to a LP Custom but other models may compare to the originals (but doubtful)
You can get the same sound out of an LP studio or standard, but sound isn't everything (as you know, otherwise you wouldn't have so many Gibson LP's) The custom is just a thing of beauty and history and there is the label. But there is one thing you didn't get right. I think the Edwards is not the best LP Custom from a company that is not Gibson. It is very likely to be better. As a collector you will have a Gibson custom one day. I promise! Look forward to the next video. Cheers
What a great looking guitar! I see that is been quite a while that you bought this guitar, so what do you have to say about it? Is it really as good as it looks? Oh, and I liked your definition, I'm gonna starting using for myself too: I'm also a guy that " messes with guitars" lol Regards
So you played one model, and one example of that model.Im assuming you played the same as the one in the vid? There are many others that are of higher quality than Edwards-JV Tokai, Greco, Burny, Aria Pro II and Navigator;new Tokai,Navigator,Bacchus,Orville. They're just the brands-not to mention the renowned factories and custom shops all over Japan.Id like to hear your experience with other brands, models etc.since you seem so dead against any Les Paul copy(apart from Heritage.Do you own one btw?)
I'm not dead against LP style guitars at all. Otherwise, I never would have played it in the first place! I'm just saying that this model is different than a real one. I did play this, and a few other models, because the store had a large selection, and I came to the same conclusion with each. All of these other brands make great guitars for the money, but they are not the same..they are LP styles. Maybe Orville's the same though (But I never played one). Burny, Greco, and Tokai, I have played..
I think it's because of the legal issues Gibson is going through now in regards to the sourcing of the wood they use. They've been a bit overpriced for quite some time, and their quality control has suffered since the late 90's when they started expanding their range too quickly. Just my observation.
Excuses...excuses....Iommi cut his finger tips off, and he overcame :p just messing with ya. Hope everything works out for you. Beautiful guitar...I have a feeling that video and pictures dont do it justice. I can only image what it looks like in person. Such a high golss finish...just wait till you start to get the wear marks from resting and moving your strumming arm. And lets not forget the fingerprints :p
and are all great LP style guitars too...but again, not the same. I have a Heritage 150 that I use for daily practice, and that feels the same as Gibson CS models(IMHO) which, are better than USA production. I get the feeling that I'm upsetting you, and I am certainly not intending too. I'm just making a point that if you want the feel, build quality, and craftsmanship of a LP, only Gibson or Heritage will satisfice that. If you want a good deal LP style, check out those and even Epi Japan!
Brand new, they are comparable in price with maybe a LP Traditional, but used, they can get pretty cheap, but I think the older ones tend to sometimes stray from the original design (flatter neck, etc.) though. That being said, the new LPS is a pretty far cry from the original! Obviously, it's all subjective to what you want. The Les Paul Classic 1960 was a very accurate design as far as sound and feel...I see those going for $1200USD used all of the time.
Well, I own 9 LPC altogether...they are my favorite! But only 3 are from the Custom Shop (all 2005...best year of recent times IMO). The other ones are 1971 (x2) 1973, 1981, 1987, 1997(Technically, Custom Shop, but it was production). The othe CS LP is an R9. My 2 USA LP's are 2012 Traditional Plus and a 2005 Standard plain top. Seriously, I don't work for them or endorse them!
does it matter? quit your mcdonalds job,get a better education and you can afford the things you want. laziness will not get you the things you want in life, but you'll always be full of piss and vinegar. if this works for you ,great.if it doesn't,great.
Edwards are Awsome and if more people knew about how good they are Gibson would be screwed,,,,,,,I collect guitars and have lots of top of the line guitars ,,you name it I have it,,and Edwards are just as goog/ better than any of my high dollar guitars,,,And the big thing is they are way cheaper.I know people will be like yea sure but if you know about the Japanese quality in ESP these are IT....
Not 100% on this.I believe that Steve Vai replaced John after a tendon injury in his hand.Or at least that was the story. It's been so long ago.I know I could look it up but that's too much effort.lol
It's still not a proper ESP ;) i'm just kidding, your making me want to sell my Epiphone lp custom and get an Edwards version. Btw as far as I know his name is prenounced sigh-kis-eh (not sure if thats quite right lol) but yeah not sigh-keys. Congrats on the guitar, can't go wrong with an ESP/Edwards :).
Who do you think you are to insult them? You have no idea who they are and what they've done in music. Nor me, for that matter. If they are so incomparable - how is this so? Care to elaborate?
Yeah wtf is wrong with the 2012 Gibson LP custom. Even the stupily priced normal Custom now comes a richlite fretboard. Why would they do that on a $3500 guitar. Slippery slope Gibson.
Heritage is the best Les Paul made that doesn't say Gibson on the headstock...in fact, it's the only real Les Paul, not made by Gibson's Custom Shop (which is where the Custom is made and has zero QC issues). That thing doesn't stand up to a real LP Custom...but maybe a recent Gibson USA. No offense, but sell all your shitty guitars and get a few good ones! You have a few really great amps...your guitar philosophy should be the same! Also, it's pronounced "syks," not "sy-kees."
He was also the guitarist in Thin Lizzy before Whitesnake , Sykes is a pure Badass
Hi John. Gibson costs that much just because that's what it says on its headstock. This guitar is made VERY WELL and feels like a champ when you hold it. Now I want of these Guitars so bad! Where can I purchase one!? Can't seem to find any official site on the net!

Thank you so much for your kind words! Love the axe for sure!
By the way, , I just bought a Burny LP from Japan, it's gonna be in the way soon. As well as a Orville by Gibson FV, which is also on the way. Regards
THANKS!!!!!
This one I got from Yasoo Music on eBay. Previously I used to buy from MeesturSparkle in Japan but he appears to be out of business.

BTW dude, "Slip of the Tongue" is Steve Vai FYI.
Woaaaaah awesome Edwards GGG ... wish i could go to NAMM 2013 with u !!!
Don't worry man, we're just talking =) I'm interested in your informed opinion! Well, I'll definitely check out a Heritage when I make it over to the States - quite keen.
Your vids are my crack my you're too awesome bro keep it up.
Good point. I did consider that guitar for a short while when it was available but ultimately decided against it because of the fretboard wood being baked maple yielding a somewhat brighter tone not common with Les Pauls. Not a big fan... I am much happy with this thing. Thanks homie!

guitar looks fucking epic :D and im waiting on that amp shoot out man :P
Im just gonna assume that namm invite was for me. (Even though, clearly it wasnt). Booking my flight haha

In my country 96000 Yen is the same as 5500DKK ($1000) Thats a good price for such quality :D
Sweet video man.Which one do you prefer?ESP LTD EC-1000 CTM or this one?
Thanks bud!

Seeing as you have so many guitars Esp,Ltds and Edwards I was wondering in your opinion is this Edwards as good or close to the Ltd Elite Eclipse I
Whatever the issue was (more than once) is not the point - the point is, the company's fine is passed on to you - the Gibson customer.
I knew about this, but I'm surprised ESP actually told you!?
You can get the same sound out of an LP studio or standard, but sound isn't everything (as you know, otherwise you wouldn't have so many Gibson LP's) The custom is just a thing of beauty and history and there is the label.

Where did you order from? Thanks,
and are all great LP style guitars too...but again, not the same.
Thanks! \m/
Where does this guy work to afford all of that gear?
Brian Falls im sure its maths related~ =P
does it matter?
quit your mcdonalds job,get a better education and you can afford the things you want.
laziness will not get you the things you want in life, but you'll always be full of piss and vinegar.
if this works for you ,great.if it doesn't,great.
trillriff-axegrinder
Massive dose of presumption there?
I want the edwards goldtop with p90s. Theres a great review by guitarshak
8 years late to this party. Got a lefty last week....2010 model. Impressive!!

It's been so long ago.I know I could look it up but that's too much effort.lol
talking throughout the whole video without playing a single note????
My thoughts exactly dude.
Woooow
Plus u snowboard. Dont b catchin any toe edges whn ur hittin those kickers! Lol.. serious note, hope u feel better
FUCK YEAH NAMM!
If you can get here, I have a NAMM pass for ya.
I understand there are a lot of idiots who can't do their job working in guitar stores - but that certainly doesn't apply to everyone.
Why keep calling ESP Edwards?
8 minutes - just play the thing
ebay
20 minutes and did not sound??
Who do you think you are to insult them? You have no idea who they are and what they've done in music. Nor me, for that matter.
If they are so incomparable - how is this so? Care to elaborate?
i think all guitarists have carpal tunnel and arthritis
Also it sucks about your health, athritis sucks for sure, horrible mixed. I hope it gets better.
