Trichroic Prism

- A dichroic prism splits light into two beams of differing wavelength (colour). A trichroic prism assembly combines two dichroic prisms to split an image into 3 colours. They are usually constructed of one or more glass prisms with dichroic optical coatings that selectively reflect or transmit light depending on the light's wavelength. That is, certain surfaces within the prism act as dichroic filters. These are used as beam splitters in many optical instruments. (Wikipedia)

I remember finding one of these in an old projector, it mystified me as a kid.
Eh it's the man himself TheBackyardScientist
It’s strange to reply to a comment three years later.
Tim is such an honest, good soul we need more people like him.
He is irreplaceable.
Don't be fooled. Tim is building all of his 'toys' in to one gigantic Doomsday weapon, the likes of which the Universe has never seen. If nobody stops him he will destroy us all.
tim for President
Hed make a better president than Trump has been, must admit.
thats not a very high standard
Tim: "Wow!
-
Well now that I've got your attention..."
This is the most calming episode ever. I love it. It really puts one's mind at ease.
Yeah. I have it on my relax-before-sleep playlist.
You have no idea how on edge this episode made me. I am an experimental physicist, and we buy dichroic prisms for thousands of dollars. Touching them with your fingers ruins them beyond repair.
It's obviously not the expensive kind, but when the host touch the sides with his bare hands, my heart-rate went up.
idk why but I recognise you. Were you in a scott the woz comment section? And did you sell him wii sports?
@@gozert5744 correct, but it was Wii play
@@Jawaddles ah, my bad. But still, that's cool af
imagine having one of those on a rotating platform with a light focused on it.
would make a room look pretty magical.
Although Tim touches on science, he is all about the whimsy, and that is what makes him so cool!!! His style reminds me of Mr Wizard, a TV show host we had in the US. Many shows fashioned themselves after him but only captured the honesty, imagination, and curiosity that I remember from Mr Wizard! Thank you, Tim.
P Victor that’s actually an excellent comparison. I remember watching the later episodes of Mr. Wizard myself and miss that show.
I was feeling really depressed and honestly really shitty today, until I found this account. Watching these videos makes me smile, and they're quite fascinating to watch. I'm feeling much better after having watched a few of these. Keep up the good work, Tim!
Hope you are doing great now
Tim is the Bob Ross of toys. his voice and the way he talks soothes my soul
I absolutely love the opening:
"Wow! ... Now that I've got your attention,"
:')
TIM YOU ABSOLUTE MADMAN UPLOADING TWICE IN ONE DAY
Onjit Told Tim to bring water from the Nile and he actually did it the absolute madman
Onjit
He's been drinking that Nile water
At your age Tim? Are you insane?
Tim makes my day, every time.
What a cool effect, I would like to suspend one from a corner, hang it from a ceiling and shine a bright focused white light on it as it is spinning in a dark room.
^ this
best of luck setting that up
it probably wouldnt be too hard, if you could get one with a hole in it you can just tie some string around it and hang it up
Fascinating
If you then play music, you could charge a substantial entrance fee..... so I've heard.
This is honestly one of the most beautiful things I have ever seen.
I often love spraying a hose into the air to make my own rainbow but this is easier, never ceases to amaze me how you can just create these colours seemingly out of thin air.
Geez, got all super relaxed watching him shine the light at the end and then abruptly awoken by the outro!
There's a guy named Jack Storms and he takes an effect similar to this (he uses dichroic aside from trichroic) and turns it into a glass sculpture masterpiece. It takes him months to finish one project as he has to build it layer by layer. Just search him on UA-cam. It's amazing
thanks for the recommendation
Me: Who uploads at 4 in the morning?
Tim: Wow, 4 am.
ThatCleverFox you have to remember he lives in England so it could be a different time than where you are
ThatCleverFox Midday in the UK (8 hours in front of US)
For me, it is 7 PM right now.
ThatCleverFox wow it was like 11 am here in uk
Me: Who thinks that everybody else conforms to their timezone?
Me again: Don't know, but my bet is that they're American.
Didn’t expect to find something from Tim when searching for glass prism, but this video deserves a like and this channel deserves the highest honor I can bestow: subscribed *all notifications*
Oh, I know just how he feels. At fifty-eight years of age I am neither easy to surprise nor easy to amuse, but hand me a trichroic prism and a flashlight and suddenly I'm eight years old again! I've never heard of this man nor seen any of his videos, seeing just this one has convinced me to subscribe. After all, if you must see illusions, and apparently I must, then shouldn't they be grand ones?
0"05 Oh tim, when it's your vids, you've always got our attention.
Tim has access to a Tesseract now,
Strangely enough I feel like he is the exact kind of person who would have a worldsaving/conquering/destroying device on his living room shelf
Tim idk when you'll decide to leave us, but I'm truly going to miss you.
Tim can never be replaced.
Hah, I was so mesmerized that I got startled when the music came on at the end.
I had one of those when I was little! My dad used to work on those old big screen tv's and I think he got it out of one of them, and gave it to me. I played with it all the time, and now I really miss it.
Tim is amazed by everything. He's great!
Who thinks Tim should do ASMR?
ThePhiloctopus He already does
all of his vid is basically asmr
Tim should do vlogs of his travels to toy shows honestly. If he isn't down to filing himself he could do it documentary style, interviewing toy inventors, telling stories, etc.
It’s so shiny! Thanks for sharing!
Great video as always, Tim
This channel will unintentionally unlock the 4th dimension
I just now discovered your channel, and I'm sad that I didn't find it earlier. thank you for this
Wow that was oddly mesmerizing O.O I felt so relaxed watching it. The colors took over my soul
came for my daily "heh"
a nice guy with great stuff to share, yes, we do need more people like him in the world!
**insert Pink Floyd lyrics here*
This is fascinating... Can I get one of these from Grand Illusions, or is this from Tim's collection?
Elliot Grey "...so you run and you run to catch up with the sun but it's sinking, racing around to come up behind you again, the sun is the same in a relative but you're older, shorter of breath and one day closer to death..."
This toy you can get from Grand Illusions. www.grand-illusions.com/acatalog/Trichroic-Prism-819.html
Elliot Grey ooh Thanks Tim
Sometimes you can get a bit defective ones (that didn't made their way into digital projectors because of those defects) on eBay from various Chinese sellers that are trying to get rid of them. They aren't dirt cheap, perfect nor big as this one but they're ok for nonprofessional purposes.
Znarf Czerw has become comfortably numb :)
This is so relaxing.
"Wow! Now that I got your attention..."
You sure did Tim. You sure did.
Prisms and light, a never outdated science experiment.
how can someone dislike this? it's beauty and life, awesome
Wow, that's cool, man.
I love your voice its so satisfying☺️
Very cool! I used to have a prism that was surplus from Reagan's "Star Wars" program, with seven main faces. If you looked into it the right way you could see in four directions at the same time.
This video ASMRed me to the roots
I was waiting for him to elaborate more on the use in data projectors, but nevertheless still another great video from Tim.
Oh Tim, you always have my attention. :)
White LEDs are often missing bits of the color spectrum. It would be interesting to see if an incandescent flashlight gives different results.
I dreamt of a new colour once. I can't explain how it looks like coz noone has seen it.
This brings me peace.
I believe I own that exact same flashlight. Extraordinary.
Awesome - I want one!
what's it look like if you use two lights from different sides? or a side and corner? could get interesting.
This is the closest we will get to Tim Asmr
I should be asleep. But this is better.
This Video couldn't be more perfect, it literally stars with a "W O W" and then a "H E H"
What happens when you fire a laser light through it??
it would probably split in more directions, id guess
laser is only a red wavelenght by itself, extremely tight to not spread
it wont split to more colors but would probably spread
For a single prism, it will show up in a narrow band, and only in the direction in which that colour is seen when you shine a white light (or in harmonics of that wavelength, which is important only if you're dealing with some light outside the visible spectrum). For multiple prisms like this, it's the same deal, except that the angle will be changed by each prism through which the light passes, plus you'll get a few extra bands, since the light which passes through one prism may scatter in a different direction from the next one.
You might actually see some interference patterns from multiple prisms, also.
Lasers actually come in a number of different colors, though red (and, I believe, green) are two of the more common ones.
This would make a fantastic display if you put it on a "Solar Powered Rotating Display Stand Turn Table" with a small light like a white LED or something shining on it on the side, so it would turn slowly and project colours on a table or display cabinet :) Maybe you could even stick the prism and the turntable to a wall with a light on it , so that it projects light upwards onto the wall, doubling as a source of light
Seen a few similar (albeit little) cubes when I've taken apart cd/dvd burners, very neat.
Tim,don't worry, you always have our attention
Keep up the good work Tim
Lord Helix has returned
What does it look like when differnt coloured laser pointers are used?
The cool thing is that you can do this same thing with invisible laser light and so you can separate different laser frequencies.
WE NEED LONGER VIDEOS !
wait...what? I'm...confused...what??? It's over already!??! I was just getting comfortable in my seat listening to this!!! And now it's over!!!!
Tim is the type of person you would want to meet in person
wow i want it, i love your videos
Coat the glass with water from the Nile?
Very cool! :-)
Wonderful!
love ya Tim
That's pretty, it would look good spinning with assorted colour lasers pointing at it and an occasional focused white strobe.
Extraordinary
Officially my pre-bed chill channel.
I don't want tim to ever leave this planet :(
Where can you buy one of these?
Tim may have an actual infinity stone here.
I dont think its a coating, the material itself diffracts light. There is a nice trick i used to do as a kid: grab a big container(like a pot) and fill it with water, then put a mirror on the bottom under water and bring it outside on the sunlight. The reflection will be a rainbow dancing to how the water ripples, water diffracts light too. Beautiful. Makes you wonder what is all around us that we cant see.
Why are you using selevtive spectrum LED torch to play with a prism?? :/
I was just watching We Are Number One sung by the "Wow" guy and then I watch this and Tim opens with "Wow!"
what did humanity do to deserve Tim? his kindness and good hearted nature is so out of place in todays world.
One could say that you can choose ... *_any colour you like_*
This video has been en*light*ening
*cue Pink Floyd*
If that is an LED flashlight, there's a whole nuther bunch of interesting things going on.
Rainbow is a Natural Prism(Reflection of Colours)Effect from Sunlight with Rain.
Whoa, I'm kind of disoriented from painkillers and this looks amaaaaazing
I just need Tim to make another version of this same video, only several hours long. With him talking intermittently about the colors he likes. Too much to ask?
What happens when u use a laser pointer on one of these?
Having some trouble finding a US based retailer for these. Anyone have a lead?
I can't believe there's not more outcry for bringing back the old theme, people were doing covers of it and everything..
yayy new videoo :3
Where can I get one!?
Where can I find a trichroic prism like this to buy? :O
Old comment, I know, but he actually has this exact product for sale:
www.grand-illusions.com/trichroic-prism-c2x24325119
now the producer has to make that window decoration things for sunlight play with this...
happiness on simple things !!!
That "Wow" was early. Caught me off guard
Best thumbnail ever
So what happens if you point a red laser pointer at it? How about a green one...?
what if you flash a black light?
got jump scared by the closing bit
at least he still has that early you tube charm
