Ep. 5 | Stop buying Tiny Pistols! Or at Least Hear Us Out First..

  • Maybe you're shopping for your first handgun, or even thinking about getting one for a loved one who is newer to shooting. Conventional wisdom says "Smaller is less scary" and therefore, smaller handguns will be less formidable, easier to shoot, and produce lighter recoil for yourself or the newer shooter in your life. Instructor Pete is here to explain why the exact opposite is actually true and you'd be much better off starting with a full-size handgun. This isn't to say that small handguns have no place whatsoever, but we find that far too many people buy them for the wrong reasons, thinking they're getting something they would actually find with a larger firearm.

100% agree and wish I had listened when I started. Having started with a compact and struggled repeatedly, ended up working my way up the line in size and quality (hopefully). Each held a purpose at the time. Now my favorite is the full sized ones, but still train with the others since I use them differently.

I work at an FFL. I'm a confirmed anti tiny hand gun guy, as a first gun.
One of the things our industry does very poorly is market tiny cute color guns to women.
I thin everyone should start out on a G19 or G17 size gun as their first gun. Then they need to get some training, learn some skills, and once they have some established skills, then look for a smaller gun.
I'm fortunate that my wife is a certified instructor and the group of women instructors she trains with feel the same way.
    Good Stuff!!!

A lot of great points. I learned how to shoot on a 1911 a long time ago and now I can honestly say that I'm not a big fan of the micro compact or compact just for concealment. I carry a Canik TP9 Combat Elite Executive as my EDC and actually moved from a M&P Shield to the Canik.

Very nice! As you can tell, we are not fans of the small guns either.

(For me, with large hands) the Glock 26 is surprisingly comfortable to shoot, especially with SI's +2 baseplate.

good 'ol Pete. I remember many classes with him when he was with PODS. I'll take a few classes at Vortex Edge just to meet the legend again. Beer's on me bro.

have been into guns and was able to shoot subcompact 9mm pistols prior to getting my own edc and realized they suck, that being said I ended up with a compensated gen 5 G19 and an enclosed emitter red dot, great info in the video

Went to the range yesterday with my duty issued g45 and g43. I really dislike the g43 because of my 2xl glove sized hands. Previous department I had a g17 and carried that off duty as well.

Big hands are not a good combo for small guns. Thanks for tuning in!

Still small length of barrels and can be too snappy for some folks.

Mid-size (~15 ish rd) is the smallest size I'd get. Bigger handguns are easier to shoot. 🤷‍♂️
