not only is this scene so beautifully created, this declaration for departure was such a blow to the stalemate they were all stuck in, she had a plan to force the lord's hands even if they fail to make it out
Right? I never thought that the Naginata was that big/long in in comparison to its wielder. I always imagined it being small and thin; easy to twirl between the fingers like a spear or a bo staff. Hell, the shaft is thicker than I thought too since Mariko was wielding it with a two handed grip. (Except for when she’s readjusting her grip.)
How many years did Mariko want to die, only for Toranaga to tell her "No way! Not yet. If I have a servant who actually WANTS to die, I am definitely gonna save that in my back pocket for a time when it will serve my agenda BEST", and then after a decade or something he tells her "it's finally time; make it spectacular"
This scene beautifully captures the spirit of the ancient Japanese samurai, as Mariko, having fought valiantly, gracefully accepts her defeat and announces her intent to commit seppuku in accordance with the samurai code. Both her enemies, refraining from any further attack, and her allies, though sorrowful, honor her decision. The depiction of this moment truly exemplifies the noble character of the samurai.
Hosokawa Gracia, the real Japanese noble woman that Mariko portrays actually did die by ordering her servants to stab her through the door. Since, she’s a Christian, she couldn’t do a seppuku or die by her own hands.
This is very similar to the passage in the books, though in that Mariko's samurai do not get ganged up on. They do one man duels until the last falls after 4 consecutive fights. One thing I wish they had included was that after Mariko retreats back to the estate she makes sure she's alone and then her facade breaks down and she cries for the men she had to just send out to die for her doomed attempt, it's very humanising and in keeping with her character.
Such display of honorable bravery and loyalty to duty is simply astounding. They embrace death as the utmost fulfilment of their duty. Those archers are a holes though. They killed the 3 slash samurai without a fight. 😢
I've watched this scene about 100 times in a week and the way her men were ready to die and kill for her just shows how much they really respected her. The one who bowed to her before he died and she returned his bow shows mutual respect.
