THIS...THIS...THIS!!!! THIS is exactly why we all love Jess Mariano. He gave Rory the kick in the butt she needed to get back on the right track again. She did the same with him earlier on in the series. He knew he wasn't right for her, so he went off to become that man for her. When he returned, he realized she was not ready for him. They are the definition of right person, wrong time.
His delivery is everything. I don't want to be hyperbolic so I won't say Milo was a _vital_ part of what made GG great or anything, but when Jess appears, his presence is always FELT. He makes an impact every time, and whether you love him or hate him, he does usually push the story forward in interesting directions... And NEVER was a push more needed than during Rory's college drop-out era...
Jess was a rebellious and angry teenager with a lot of issues (he grew up alone, his mother was unable to raise him properly and sent him and his boxes at some point to his uncle's home because she gave up on him, and his father was nowhere to be found, no one cared for him, there were so many reasons why he acted the way he did at the time, he was totally a lost boy who probably thought no one loved him and he probably hated himself in the process), and then, there were books and writing (and Rory), that saved his life. And we come to this episode, one of the best of the show, showing us how great (and handsome) Jess has become. He is Rory's wake-up call and it means so much. I missed him on the show, it was so good to see him again, even if it was shortly. I love Jess. I love grown-up Jess. I always will. Team Jess forever.
This is the episode that Jess got a lot of respect because he opened Rory's eyes. Milo's delivery was so well done! Logan talking about Hemingway to Rory also triggered her more because that is one of Jess' favorite authors. Her not telling Logan about Jess is in character for her because she did that also to Dean when it came to Jess. Jess also hurt her a lot by leaving multiple times and Rory is someone that runs away from the stuff that hurt her. I love that Jess is the only one that can make Logan jealous because he immediatly saw what we all see.
19:29 Logan never even asked her birthday, in their whole relationship, I just realised, cause when Emily brought it up he was surprised, Jess remembered all that time
I will always cringe when comparing how Jess came in, remembered her birthday and gave her a book written by him - and Logan's gift for her has been an expensive hand bag? One Rory had to do even research on to even recognize it? Lol, talking about knowing a person.
i could talk about this episode forever. best ep ever!!!! jess wasn't ever even that bad, he was just a kid who grew up in an abusive household so idk what people expected from him lol. but this is everything, his arc is too good. the fact that he was the only one to make her reconsider things is amazing when rory was the one to help him make a change in the first place when they were teens. they are clearly soulmates, (and the chemistry is insane)
He's just a good freaking character, is what he is. No one is perfect - him least of all - but he's always there to make you feel things, and that's the mark of great character writing.
Logan wasn't suddenly a jerk in this episode... this was simply the episode where his mask fell off. He's very manipulative and self-centered, and he usually works his charm when he wants to get his way, but that's just his mask. Jess is always genuine, for better or for worst, on the other end. He has the best growth Jess is Rory's Luke, and Logan is Rory's Christopher, to me at least.
1000% Agree. Never was I able to like Logan for real coz he always came off as a phony and with you comparing him to Christopher it just clicked for me too. he is Rory's Christopher!
This is one of my favorite episodes of the series. It's the first episode where I started to like Jess. Before this, I couldn't stand Jess. That said, the arrival of bully, trust fund-baby Logan in the series made Jess, even early Jess, look better by comparison. While Logan overtly showed what a jerk he is in this episode, it's worth noting that he wasn't that much worse than the way he treated, Marty, Rory's friend who she cornered into having a movie night with her after she started to hang out with Logan and his gang of idiots, then Logan showed up during the movie night, and instead of telling Logan, she couldn't see him that night, Marty got roped into going along with Rory, Logan, and the aforementioned idiots, putting Marty in a humiliating situation. I lost so much respect for Rory that episode, especially when Marty mustered the courage to tell her he liked her romantically, and her response was that she liked Logan, who she watched degrade him. Rory is such a crappy friend. Putting aside that I think Marty would've been a better match if she would've given him a chance, she could've told Marty how she values his friendship, but she doesn't think they'd work as a couple, instead she just brings up his bully as a better romantic prospect. Then only a few episodes later, in a bit of Karma, Rory ends up drunk, crying on the floor about why doesn't Logan like her. And it's been down hill from there as she's gotten further involved with Logan and his crowd.
it made sense that jess was the person to break through to her but it kind of pissed me off cause it was all the same things Lorelei had been telling her, even the whole dating Logan back when she first liked him
Aaaand this is where we get the confirmation that Logan is in fact a gigantic man baby, who wants all of the privileges of having his family's money, but not of the strings that come attached with it. If he wanted to be free so badly, he could just fuck off and stop getting founded. But no, Mr. golden spoon wants all of the fun and none of the responsibility. Meanwhile Jess has just become a very decent human being.
I completely agree that in this episode Logan is being an idiot, but I still love him so much. He was having a bad day, plus he was jealous. I´ve never loved Jess, but I like him when he comes back more grown up, and in this situation he gives the wake up call Rory needs.
JESSSSSSSSSSSSS - he always knew her better than anyone which is why when he called her out she was frozen because she had no excuse lol. Logan's a twat - worse than Dean even - he's just Christopher 2.0 who thinks everything he says and does makes him cool when it really just makes him pretentious and unlikable. GREAT episode though lol
They did do a bit of a 360 on Logan this ep, he was just suddenly really jerky. I can also see why he was upset because he's been supporting Rory's decision on Yale, and she never told him she was going out with Jess. With that said, there was a distinct difference between his behavior and Jess, who has grown and just came off so much more likable. But sadly, Jess isn't really in the show anymore, so he's not really a valid option for Rory. And in a general sense I do think that Logan has been a good boyfriend and clearly loves Rory. He's had a bad week or so. I am still Team Jess forever but I dont hate Logan.
Definitely not Logan's finest episode, but all I'll say in defense against Jess being better for Rory is that he's too mature for her. He had to not be around her, and grew up to be a very productive person. I think he deserves someone who is on the same page as he is.
Oh noooo lol You gotta pause when you react because you missed one of Rory’s most iconic lines in the entire series! During her confrontation with Emily, after Emily says “you’re behaving more like your mother with every passing day”, Rory fires back with, “and you’re behaving more like my mother’s mother with every passing day.”
I don't hate Jess, but the way fans idolize him is ridiculous 😂 Apparently all it takes is the "wHy DiD yOu DrOp OuT oF yAlE" line for y'all to forget the way he acted for two or three entire seasons? If we have to recap: • LITERALLY the last time Jess saw Rory, HE was the one who asked her to drop out of Yale to run away with him. But THAT was okay? • Jess is a high school drop out (and that's because of his own attitude - despite being smart enough) and he's out here judging Rory for something he has no idea about? • We never actually see Jess applogizing to Rory for, you know....practically forcing himself on her and then immediately ghosting her after? What exactly are y'all basing Jess's "character development" on? The fact that he wrote a book? I don't think Jess actually cares that much if Rory returns to Yale....he was just upset seeing her with Logan and took it out on her. That's it. Also, Lorelai WASN'T the best mother. Even despite crying about it, she still shuts Rory out. But the second Rory goes back to Yale (in the next episode), she immediately starts talking to her again. Manipulative.
"i know you better than anyone" tho...bro, release a bit of that ego before it explodes. ugh "going out with this jerk?! we used to make fun of people like that" ok, so you two were also jerks.
@@arielm227 yeah. people say he is much more mature here but he is acting the same as usual. Logan is a jerk for not liking his gf going out with him, specially without telling him about it (secrets? why?) then he starts screaming about why she isnt in yale without knowing reasons, jsut judging. so why did he drop out of highschool? like...dude, shut up
They didn't develop his character off screen. He was already developed in season 4 where it's clearly being shown he was maturing and trying to improve himself. He was supposed to come back in season 5 for 2 or 4 episodes but because of scheduling conflicts they couldn't bring him back until season 6. You simply didn't pay attention in season 4. Also Dean never apologized for how he treated Rory and he did much worse things to her than Jess. Logan too.
although his entire character development was not shown onscreen, the foundation for it was already laid in s4 clearly. asking forgiveness from luke and thanking him, mending relationship with his mom, working on himself by reading self-help books and even though i think his rash proposal to rory to run away was so out of the blue and irresponsible, he finally got to communicating to rory what he felt even though it was done lousily. so, no the character development did not happen out of nowhere. but, i do agree. we should have gotten a scene where he apologized as well.
i don't think that was jess did for rory this ep should negate how horribly he treated her when they were together. and i don't think this one instance of logan lashing out should negate how great he has been up until this point. he's never had a girlfriend before / been in a relationship. he doesn't know HOW to be boyfriend but he's trying and overall up until this point he's been pretty good.

"WHY DID YOU DROP OF OF YALE!" - Such an iconic line
Its one of those lines that you can read in text and immediately hear how it was said. "WHY did you DROP out of YAAAAALE?!"
His delivery is everything.

Not only does Jess have some great growth, but he also imo brings out the best in Rory, which is why he’s my favorite of the love interests.
"I think we should break up with Logan now" is so real of you haha
oh adult jess you had sm potential "why did you drop out of yale" is one of the show's most iconic scenes
I don't care what Jess has ever done, this was... I'm too happy to find even a word for it. Always Team Jess, forever and forever.
He's just a good freaking character, is what he is. No one is perfect - him least of all - but he's always there to make you feel things, and that's the mark of great character writing.
i believe he is a perfect person but not a perfect boyfriend
Just from the thumbnail I could tell that this is the “WHY DID YOU DROP OUT OF YALE” episode! 😂
logan made me so mad this ep, but jess’ “why did you drop out of yale” speech is so iconic I can quote it
This is the ONE! ❤ Only Jess can help her. Open her eyes! The next one, we like Rory again 😆❤ Team Jess always!!!
Yessss finally!! Ahh the end of this episode makes me so happy
Logan wasn't suddenly a jerk in this episode... this was simply the episode where his mask fell off. He's very manipulative and self-centered, and he usually works his charm when he wants to get his way, but that's just his mask.

I’ve been waiting for this one🙌🏻
the reason everyone loves jess is because he actually has character development whereas rory just gets worse
been waiting so long for you to get to this episode!!!!
Logan, same like Jess, improves with time. They grow together. Jess is so good because we only get him in mini doses and the doses are so great
This is one of my favorite episodes of the series. It's the first episode where I started to like Jess. Before this, I couldn't stand Jess. That’s why everyone says that Logan is Rory’s “Christopher” and Jess is Rory’s “Luke.”
What an epic episode

I'm so happy ❤❤❤❤❤❤
I have been waiting for this omg
After this episode made me change the view I had from Jess, he was so real I can’t explain
Imagine.......Viggo playing Luke.
Logan definitely doesn’t have the courage to do what Lorelai did. Walk away from it all, live their own life, and start fresh someplace else.
They did do a bit of a 360 on Logan this ep, he was just suddenly really jerky. I can also see why he was upset because he's been supporting Rory's decision on Yale, and she never told him she was going out with Jess.

@27:29 give it time haha
The “Boys are boys, and girls are girls,” line always makes me cringe.
What Every fan has been waiting for in this stupid annoying storyline...
Jess Mariano showing up and delivering the "wHY did you DroP oUt Of Yaaale??"
Im probably the only one but I hate the whole Paul Anka thing
I swear this video came out yesterday but then vanished 😂
3:50 lmfaooo
Let's go!

@ logan apologized. jess just showed up in s4 expecting rory to run away with him after yelling at her for not wanting to have sex with him.
