  • We probably know more about the surface of the moon than we do about the species that live in the temperate rainforest at Borrowdale in the Lake District. Just like the tropical rainforests you might find in the Amazon, Borrowdale rainforest is a rare and internationally important habitat.
Temperate rainforests usually occur on the west coast of the UK, where oceanic climates help to create unique habitats for nature. They’re different from most woodlands, as moisture and rainfall encourage distinctive species of lichen and bryophytes (such as liverworts, hornworts and mosses) to grow. The rainforest at Borrowdale, near Keswick, is a tiny fragment of a once gigantic forest that spanned the west coast of England, Wales, Scotland and Ireland.
The rainforest is currently looked after by the National Trust. Learn about how a National Nature Reserve has been established to help protect the animals and plants. This includes connecting the remaining fragments of temperate rainforest and discovering more about the species that live there.
You’ll also learn about how we’re engaging local communities with our work and collaborating with National Trust tenant farmers, who are helping to create green corridors for wildlife by planting orchard woodlands and hedgerows.
With your support, we’re able to protect precious habitats like this and help nature thrive. Thank you.

Hi there, while we care for a number of rainforests across the country, our friends at the Woodland Trust have launched their Rainforest Appeal recently which may be the more specific action you're looking for. "It's a treasure that we in Britain should be really, really proud of" - this is laughable that the National Trust should finish this video by dunking on themselves. It's a great video, beautifully shots, but the single political aim that is advanced is not supported by the evidence. If it's already protected (the video implies that it currently is) and it's already a treasure we should be proud of, then it doesn't need NNR status does it guys and gals? So no, don't go appealing to government agencies that have a habit of effing things up. Just encourage the government to stay out of your way and then the National Trust can keep doing its beautiful work.

There is so much more to it than that,,,, humanity doesn't want to acknowledge the full scale of interference that has occurred and what the implications are in terms of how we now interpret the world around us as a result....What exists today is simply the most resilient as we became a calculatable factor that forced the planet to stabilise information with a reduction in complexity these circumstance often result is a slow gradual decrease in diversity which hinders a free fall from occurring....! We ate away at the food chain until its stability became compromised.....!
