I had no Idea that one had to/could swap tubes that way😅
I always thought that tube amps were devices like other dac-amps that came with pre-installed 'tubes' and sounded somewhat different..

They do come installed with stock tubes but part of the enjoyment is swapping the tubes and finding pairings.

      @@TheHonestAudiophile I've learned that today!
Although I can't fathom the underlying technology..
I guess I'll look it up!

I recently tried the 6SN7 select in the Schiit LRY3 and it was a definite improvement over the Stock Tube Schiit included with the LYR3. I have the Ray 6SN7 Reserve coming from Apos which costs 3X as much. Fingers crossed it turns the LRY3 into an amp that sounds like it cost over$1K

Awesomeness 😎 Look forward to hearing your impressions of the Reserve.

Was the reserve worth the upgrade?

    • @JTB--

@@danisold Both the Ray Select and Reserve are better sounding than the LYR3 Stock tube. But the Reserve really brings the better Clarity, Bass punches harder, better midrange. It's a nice upgrade tube if you have the money. I'm not a Tube Roller. This was my first time and probably the last. But I can recommend both of the Ray 6SN7 Select and Reserve as an upgrade over the stock tube for the LYR3 and LYR+
PS- You need a Socket saver for Both the LYR3 and LYR+ with these Ray 6SN7 Tubes

I heard about tubes a while ago but never really gave it a serious thought until I saw your review today. Also, I think you are the first in my list of UA-cam audiophiles I follow that I've seen with a tube review. I am curious though, since the sound signature is a bit warm (given the natural presentation of tubes) if there are any recommendations you might have when driving your speakers/headphones/IEMs to not tip the scales and make the presentation "too warm" in the audio chain (i.e. DAC type, interconnect cable type, and headphone/IEM cable type, etc.). 🤔

Tubes are fun to experiment with as they can create different experiences with your DAC, headphones, IEM and speakers. Depending on what you're seeking a tube can be the difference maker or breaker. I prefer DAC or sources that are neutral and natural without adding extra flavor so that when using a tube amp the tubes can be what adds that little extra flavor or enhancement. It's an experiment to find the synergy and a sound that messes/mashes with you.

The coke bottle shape may make this a problem in tightly spaced tube sockets.

Re-branded Chinese tubes no doubt, but if they come close to a Shuguang CV181 Treasure then they have a winner.
